.AVIATION...

Cirrus will overspread the area and thicken today with mid clouds
then working into the area by late afternoon/early evening in
advance of an approaching shortwave. Ceilings will lower into
tonight with rain becoming more widespread late evening into the
overnight hours as this wave encroaches on the area. Expect MVFR
cigs to develop. Light northeast winds under 10 knots today will
also increase this evening/tonight with gusts near 20 knots by early
Friday morning. This will be especially true for KMBS where the wind
will funnel down Saginaw Bay.

For DTW...VFR conditions will deteriorate after 06z tonight as rain
begins to overspread the area. Cigs will lower to MVFR with time
with these conditions continuing into Friday when IFR cigs are not
out of the question. Northeast winds will also steadily increase
this evening into Friday with gusts to 25 knots or more by Friday
morning.

DISCUSSION...

A dry, clear, and crisp morning across the area as strong AVA worked
in overnight to allow surface high pressure to build in from the
northwest. This dry period will continue through much of the
daylight hours today as cloud cover gradually increases ahead of the
next inbound system. While cold advection from yesterday's cold
front effectively tapers off this morning, a light but persistent
northeast flow off Lake Huron will help keep temperatures cool
today. High temps only reach the 50s in the Thumb and Saginaw Bay
areas while most of the rest of southeast Michigan sees 60s today.
Normal highs for late May reside in the lower 70s.

Rain returns to the forecast late today into early Friday as the
upper low currently over the northern High Plains tracks ESE into
the mid-Mississippi Valley tonight and then along the stalled
frontal boundary over the Ohio Valley on Friday. This system engages
the elevated frontal surface draped over our area and offers
categorical rain chances as solid fgen and deformation forcing slide
overhead. With the degree of dry air in place this morning,
uncertainty remains regarding how quickly the column can saturate
later today. A number of recent solutions show a corridor of
isentropic ascent spreading into northern/central Lower MI and
bringing showers as early as this afternoon to the Tri-Cities area.
Will maintain chance mention for this period before the better
likelihood for area-wide rain arrives after sunset.

The period of steadiest rain looks to be centered on a 4am to 12pm
window Friday when the best jet streak dynamics arrive and ramp up
synoptic lift over the region. With the center of the surface low
tracking just to the south, a stout northeast wind develops locally
and keeps conditions cool and raw during this period - temps in the
40s. Thunderstorms are generally not expected with forecast
soundings not showing much in the way of elevated instability, but a
rumble or two may be possible near the Ohio border. The rain slowly
tapers off by mid-afternoon as the better forcing advances eastward,
but cloud cover will remain abundant and temps only recover a bit
during the afternoon - highs in the lower 50s.

The upper low swings around southern Lake Michigan Friday evening
and decelerates as it attempts to pinch off from the northern
stream. This keeps an inverted trough pointed toward the southern
forecast area through Friday night and possibly into Saturday -
keeping at least a slight chance of additional light rain in the
forecast. Temperatures rebound a bit on Saturday into the lower 60s
as a thermal trough still lingers over the Great Lakes. Aggressive
height rises then build in on Sunday with broad high pressure
encompassing the region into Monday, ensuring a dry latter half of
the holiday weekend. Temperatures rebound back to near-normal values
for the early week.

MARINE...

Northwest flow in the wake of Wednesday evenings cold front will
keep wave action elevated through the morning hours. High pressure
building into the region out of central Canada will cause winds to
relax and waves to subside allowing the small craft advisory to end.
The next chance for unsettled weather will come tonight and Friday
as a low pressure system passes eastward through the Ohio Valley.
The warm front will stay south of Lake Erie which would result in an
enhancement of the northeast winds already ongoing and elevated
waves building along shoreline areas. A Gale Watch has been issued
for the western Lake Erie nearshore waters as the northeast winds
look to gust to around 35 kts on Friday.

HYDROLOGY...

Area-wide rain spreads in this evening and slowly tapers off on
Friday as a low pressure system moves through the Ohio Valley.
Latest trends have led to increased forecast rainfall amounts with
most areas now expected to see a half inch to one inch of rainfall
by late Friday afternoon. Some areas may exceed one inch depending
on where the most persistent showers set up. The steadiest rainfall
rates are expected between 4am and 12pm Friday. The long duration of
the rainfall will limit flooding concerns to just ponding of water
on area roads and in poor drainage areas.
