.AVIATION...

Low level moisture will continue to deepen this morning as an area
of rainfall increases in coverage. Some fluctuation in ceiling
height and visibility will occur at times from FNT southward, but
with prevailing MVFR conditions likely with some intervals of IFR.
These conditions will persist into the afternoon, before drier
conditions return this evening affording a gradual improvement in
ceiling height from northwest to southeast. Modest winds generally
from the north or northeast into the afternoon, then backing to
northwest this evening. VFR conditions emerge as skies clear
overnight, while northwest increase in magnitude and turn
occasionally gusty. A gusty northwest wind will then characterize
conditions on Friday - reaching 25 to 30 knots at times.

For DTW...Low stratus in light rain for the daylight period. Winds
from the north-northeast through mid afternoon, then shifting to
northwest. Winds turning gusty from the northwest Friday - exceeding
25 knots during the day.

DISCUSSION...

Shower chances expand northward early this morning as developing
surface low pressure rides along the stalled frontal boundary into
north-central IN. Best rain chances look to be from the Ohio border
north to the M-59 corridor with the initial early/mid-morning shower
activity. Consensus has grown amongst models in secondary activity
developing late morning through the afternoon across SE MI. The low
tracks slow enough to allow for the incoming PVA and height falls
(associated with an upper trough dropping through the western Great
Lakes) to phase with deformation axis over lower MI. SE MI resides
under the left exit region of a jet streak across northern IN/IL
providing upper level divergence and additional support for enhanced
fgen over the area. The smattering of showers with the secondary
deformation clears out of the region by around 00Z Friday as a
surface cold front tied to the incoming trough swings across lower
MI.

A starkly different airmass follows in the wake of this cold front
for daytime Friday. PW values fall throughout the day to below a
quarter inch by Friday evening. This dry air scours out cloud cover
allowing for a mostly sunny day which will help to moderate temps to
an extent. However the increased insolation will increase mixing
depths allowing for a breezier day with gusts out of the northwest
up to around 35mph. Upper level trough settles over the central
Great Lakes during this time dropping 850mb temps to -2 to -4C. As a
result, highs will struggle to reach the upper 50s. Friday night is
looking to be another cold night with clear skies allowing lows to
fall to around the freezing mark.

Cooldown is shortlived as an upper ridge over the the northern
Plains begins to expand over the Great Lakes daytime Saturday. The
associated surface high slides southeast of the region switching
local flow to out of the southwest. Saturday will be breezy as the
gradient over SE MI remains tight between the departing high and a
low tracking through the upper Great Lakes. This low drags a warm
front across the northern half of the lower peninsula which could
generate a couple showers over the northern Thumb/Saginaw Valley
Saturday afternoon. Zonal midlevel flow develops the second half of
the weekend sliding the thermal ridge from the central Plains into
the Great Lakes. Rain chances return early Monday as a low tracking
across the upper lakes drops a cold front through lower MI over the
course of the day Monday. This cold front brings cooler seasonable
temps for the midweek.

MARINE...

Light and variable wind pattern becomes more northerly today as weak
high pressure drifts into east-central Ontario and yesterday's cold
front clears south of Lake Erie. A surface low will track through
the Ohio Valley this afternoon helping back winds northwesterly this
evening. Expect an increasing pressure gradient over Lake Huron
between the departing, but still deepening, low and building
high pressure over the Northern Plains.

Strong low-level jet winds will be overhead early Friday with
ensuing cold advection. Forecast soundings depict steep marine
boundary layer profiles within the lowest 3000 ft, supportive of
mechanically mixed gale-force gusts over the open waters, even as
water temps hover near 40F. Gales for the Huron basin open waters
with gusts in the 35-40 knot range still on-track midday Friday. Kept
sustained winds below gales, but a brief period of sustained gales
is possible near the central international border. Currently
monitoring the potential frequency for gusts to gales within the
nearshore zone from Port Austin to Harbor Beach. Kept gusts below
with the 4 AM update, but will revisit during the 10 AM refresh.
Small Craft Advisories are now in effect for all the nearshores,
including St. Clair and western Erie.

The upper wave exits by midnight followed by another low-level jet
digging through Wisconsin leading to somewhat breezy southwest flow
over the central Great Lakes Saturday afternoon. Fortunately,
stronger gusts will be blocked by the resident stable marine layer.
Calmer seas are expected on Sunday and Monday with weaker WSW flow
veering NE.

HYDROLOGY...

Light to moderate showers increase in coverage this morning for
areas south of I-69 as a low moves across northern Ohio. Additional
light showers will develop across the majority of SE MI late morning
through the afternoon before exiting the area this evening. Rainfall
totals between a quarter and half inch will be possible for areas
south of I-69 with the highest totals likely occurring near the
Michigan/Ohio border. Lesser amounts for areas north of I-69. These
rainfall amounts are not expected to cause significant flooding
concerns.
