.DISCUSSION...

Dry and mild conditions to start the day as we reside under a weak
ridge in between two strong low pressure systems. The first system
is now pulling away over Ontario heading into Quebec today while the
second is taking shape across the deep south. A strong jet rounding
the base of the longwave trough will quickly intensify the mid level
wave creating a strong and compact vorticity max which will close
off while the trough itself becomes negatively tilted. The roots in
the far south mean the system will pick up ample moisture this
morning before heading north and a strong 60+ knot southwesterly low
level jet ahead of the system will ensure a steady feed of moisture
rich air into the system through the day. PWATS will jump from the
current 0.5 inch up to an inch (possibly 1.25") this evening when
the system arrives. Models were a bit slower with the onset of
showers in recent runs, bringing the lead edge of the higher theta e
across the MI/OH border between 21-00Z this evening, then reaching
the Saginaw Valley and northern Thumb around 03Z. This dynamic
system has alot working for it with the strong shear generated from
the aforementioned low level jet, diffluence aloft in the exit
region of the +120 knot upper level jet, strong southwesterly
moisture transport, and decent mid level lapse rates with the
elevated warm front atop the stable lower levels. The surface low
then tracks along a Toledo to Port Huron line with the strong
trowal/deformation axis then sweeping through later Friday morning.
All indications are for a widespread heavy rainfall event across the
area tonight into Friday morning with a general 1 to 1.5 inches
expected across much of the area. There will also be a chance of
embedded thunderstorms which are not expected to be severe, but
would result in locally higher amounts of rainfall.

As the center of the low passes SE MI early Friday morning, a cold
front will sweep across our far southern counties around 09Z which
will open the door for a period of strong westerly/northwesterly
winds. With 850mb jet winds around 50 knots and 40 knots expected
below 900mb, the cold advection deepening the mixed layer will lead
to strong gusts at the surface. Look for gusts south I94 to reach 35-
45 mph for a couple hours before settling closer to 30-35 mph into
the morning hours Friday. Strong northeast/northerly winds farther
north of the low over Lake Huron will lead to strong onshore flow
elevated lake levels. This combined with large waves may lead to a
some lakeshore flooding concerns so an Lakeshore Flood Advisory has
been issued for the Lake Huron shoreline.

The system quickly pulls away to the east Friday afternoon bringing
dry conditions by evening with decreasing winds. The colder
northwest flow will keep max temps down on Friday around 50F but
winds turn back to the southwest on Saturday bringing temps right
back up to near 60 again. The next trough will pass through the
region Saturday night bringing the next chance of showers before
high pressure builds back in for Sunday and Monday.

.MARINE...

A brief period of quiet marine weather develops daytime today before
a strong low pressure system tracks into the central and southern
Great Lakes. The low and accompanying rain reaches the southern
lakes Thursday evening before overspreading the rest of the region
Thursday night. An isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled Friday
night, best chances being over the southern half of Lake Huron south
to Lake Erie. There remains some uncertainty in the exact track of
the low center as it tracks over an area somewhere between the
southern portions of Lake Huron to western Lake Erie. Trends tonight
have been for a track directly over or near Lake St. Clair. As a
result, this area has the most uncertainty with winds as any
deviation in track will cause significant changes in wind
speed/direction. Gusts to gales are likely over the majority of Lake
Huron as strong, cooler northerly flow develops behind the low
Friday morning. Gale warnings are up for all but the far northern
portion of Lake Huron starting early Friday morning through Friday
afternoon. A Gale Warnings is also in effect for the MI waters of
Erie over the same time period. Decided to go with a Small Craft
Advisory for Lake St Clair as the low will most likely track
directly over it keeping winds down a bit although there could be a
couple hours where gusts reach near gales, we think gusts to 30
knots will be more of the norm.

.HYDROLOGY...

A strong low pressure system will lift north through the region
tonight through Friday morning bringing widespread showers to lower
Michigan. Scattered thunderstorms may occur within the broader area
of showers tonight. Rainfall totals during this time are expected to
reach 1 to 1.5 inches across the area. The rain occurs during a
roughly 12 to 18 hour period which limits flooding concerns to prone
urban and low lying areas before the pattern exits Friday morning.

AVIATION...

There is ample moisture underneath a deepening post frontal
inversion to support some degree of low end VFR and/or MVFR based
stratus. These clouds are already approaching MBS. Based on the
progression of low level cold air, these clouds will slowly work
southeast across the remainder of the terminals overnight. Diurnal
mixing on Thursday should then erode these low clouds late morning
or early afternoon.

For DTW...The edge of the low level cold air and stratus is forecast
to approach metro by 12Z. There is some uncertainty as to how well
these clouds will hold together at metro, especially given that the
cloud layer may be more shallow in this region and thus easily mixed
out during the course of the morning Thurs.
