.AVIATION...

VFR clear conditions continue through the evening thanks to high
pressure sliding through the eastern Great Lakes. Decreasing wind
and elevated surface dewpoint then maintain a time window for areas
of fog after midnight until surface wind increases late. Haze
lingering at MBS even at press time suggests the boundary layer is
already primed there as a sign of fresh wet snow cover however
surface dewpoint in the mid to upper 30s is also supportive of fog
farther south toward DTW. A transition from MVFR/IFR fog to LIFR
stratus occurs as low pressure in the central Plains moves into Lower
MI during Sunday while pulling a warm front northward. Increasing SE
wind helps covert fog to stratus while warm frontal clouds, lurking
in KY/TN tonight, move north of the Ohio border and arrive at DTW
around sunrise. IFR/LIFR ceiling then quickly augments fog with added
moisture from light rain at DTW which possibly reaches PTK during
the morning before sliding east by afternoon. Similarly low stratus
moves northward over the rest of SE MI by noon and continues through
the day as the surface low pressure center moves across northern
Lower MI.

For DTW... VFR clear conditions with mild air in place during the
evening sets the stage for MVFR fog after midnight. The fog combines
with IFR/LIFR stratus toward sunrise and through Sunday morning.
Better news is that any light rain that occurs does so with
temperatures above freezing.

DISCUSSION...

A milder resident environment entrenched locally late this afternoon
will hold firm over the next 24 hours, responding to continued
southwest flow above 950 mb. Steady increase in stability under
broad anticyclonic flow north of high pressure building across the
Ohio valley presents a window for mostly clear sky heading into the
evening period. Modest radiational cooling potential within this
window, capped by an emerging southeast gradient and the gradual
increase in cloud with time again overnight. Signal within the model
moisture fields exists for some degree of renewed stratus expansion
overnight, perhaps accompanied by a reduction in visibility in
shallow fog. With that said, suspect this will prove overdone at
least within the near surface layer, as model guidance typically
struggles in scenarios where an elevated dewpoint exists across the
existing snowpack. This will preclude highlighting prospects for
drizzle/freezing drizzle tonight. Early morning lows ranging from
upper 20s north to mid 30s south.

Shortwave ejecting out of the central rockies today will lift
northeast into the upper great lakes Sunday. Trajectory and
magnitude of the inbound height falls will yield a standard
downstream response within the southwest flow, netting a corridor of
increasing yet relatively modest, broad isentropic ascent for the
Sunday period. This process will attempt to engage the advancing
surface to 925 mb warm frontal slope, supporting the chance of rain
- particularly from mid morning through early afternoon. Better mid
level dynamics will reside to our northwest, while the deep layer
moisture advection holds across the Ohio valley. This ensures an
event limited in both intensity and duration. Gradually moderating
thermal profile again limits the window for possible freezing rain,
perhaps a fleeting hour or two for areas mainly northeast of I-75
before temperatures nudge above freezing. Brief pre-cold frontal
environment takes residence during the afternoon. Narrow thermal
ridge characterized by 850 mb temps of 6-8c. This will allow
afternoon readings to make a run into the lower 50s despite the
likelihood of extensive cloud cover. Abrupt end to this warming
trend by evening with the cold fropa. Ensuing deep layer cold air
advection to be accompanied by an increase in gust potential early
Sunday night - degree of isentropic descent within a growing mixed
layer supporting a several hour period of westerly gusts in the 30
to 35 mph range.

Strong shortwave of northern Canadian origin arrives for the Monday
period, offering a secondary and even stronger period of deep layer
cold air advection for the afternoon and evening hours. After a
brief lull in gust magnitude Monday morning, the strength of the
advective process, degree of mixing and the underlying gradient
should again translate into west to northwest gusts of 30 to 35 mph.
Some room for temperatures to diurnally respond early, but the
timing caps the potential with readings parked in the lower to
middle 30s by afternoon. The emergence of colder, cyclonic flow with
a period of pronounced dcva affords at least low potential for some
light snow showers, particularly with northward extent.

Dry and seasonable conditions Tuesday as temperatures slowly moderate
in response to the building upper height field. A shift toward
general zonal flow through midweek appears to yield a pattern absent
of meaningful forcing or moisture advection through Thursday, with
temperatures trending warmer with time.

MARINE...

High pressure slides over Lake Erie late this afternoon and
continues east into New England by Sunday morning. Southwest winds
around 10 kt or less this evening swing around to southeast by
Sunday morning ahead of the next system while warm and stable air
builds into the central Great Lakes. Wind speed ramps up to about 20
to 25 kt over Lake Huron by the early afternoon before the cold
front sweeps through and quickly shifts winds to the west. The
center of the low tracks near the Straits Sunday afternoon with
scattered to numerous rain showers accompanying the system much of
the day. Strong cold advection then helps the mixed layer deepen
substantially Sunday evening with fresh W to NW gales likely over
northern Lake Huron. A secondary strong surge of cold air sweeps
across Lake Huron on Monday with deep mixing again bringing a good
potential for fresh gales for most of the lake. A Gale Watch remains
in effect across northern Lake Huron to account for both peaks
/Sunday evening and Monday afternoon/, and conditions will be
monitored to possibly expand the watch into southern Lake Huron with
the main focus on the Monday afternoon peak.
