.DISCUSSION...

A longwave trough stalled over the east coast Tuesday allowing a
ribbon of vorticity streaming into the western flank of the trough
to remain overhead. Combination of confluent flow, surface ridging
and dry northerly flow lead to mostly clear skies. This will
continue through today as the longwave pattern becomes more
progressive forcing the mid level ridge over the Great Lakes to join
the surface ridge. A slowly moderating airmass will allow highs to
reach near 32 today but clear skies and light winds under the ridge
will allow temps to fall into the teens.

Thursday will start off quiet but a strong trough moving into the
Pacific northwest today will reach the Great Lakes Thursday night
beginning a stretch of active weather across the region. First issue
will be precipitation/ptype Thursday night as the strong low lifts
from southern Lake MI through northern Lake Huron while deepening to
around 980mb (which has been consistently advertised for several
model cycles now). The longwave trough will be pivoting to a
negative tilt during this time as strong jet max around 150kt races
through the base of the trough south of MI which will help the
system rapidly advance through the area. The main arm of isentropic
ascent and nose of the thetae ridge arcing up into southern MI,
collocated with the left exit region of the jet will all occur
between about 00Z-06Z Thursday night. Models continue to center on
around 0.3 inches of QPF with this period of precip. Forecast
soundings show warming boundary layer with nearly isothermal layer
up through about 10kft before reaching the DGZ. Potent dry slot
surging up after 06Z will strip away most of the moisture heading
into the morning hours. With poor sounding profiles and low level
warm air advection through the overnight, thinking 8:1 snow to
liquid ratios look good overall then we just have to judge what
degree of rain mixes in across the south and how far north it can
make it. With the QPF and SLRs as such, 2-4 inches of snowfall
across the north tapering off to 1-2 inches across the south looks
good at this point.

As moisture wanes through the early morning hours Friday, we then
turn our attention to an arctic front that will surge through the
region right behind the system. 850mb temps will drop from around -
1C at midnight Thurs down to -16C by noon Friday. A tight westerly
gradient with mixing depths increasing to around 5kft will bring
down strong winds through the day. Local probability guidance and
model soundings suggest gusts between 35-40 knots should be
achievable. A Wind Advisory may be needed late Thursday night and
Friday.

The other issue from this arctic airmass will be lake effect snow
potential Friday into the weekend. Will include slight chance to
chance pops for light snow at times Friday afternoon through Friday
night at this time as the westerly flow begins to pull the Lake MI
plume across the state. Mixing depths don't look all that impressive
Saturday to get the good showers to the east side of the state but
we'll monitor and see how the lake reacts to the arctic air.

The broad longwave trough then sets up across much of the conus
through the weekend and well into next week. A northerly feed
through central Canada continually feeds arctic air in the trough
with 850mb temps of -35C just north of the Great Lakes. A second
arctic front will sweep across the area Sunday pulling even colder
air into the region with 850mb temps locally possibly exceeding -
25C. Monday looks to be the coldest day with highs just over 10F but
there will be a several day stretch from Sunday through
Tuesday/Wednesday where highs will remain below 20F. Low will
routinely drop into the single digits, nearing 0F Sunday night and
Monday night.

.MARINE...

Pressure gradient weakens today as the Northeast low moves into the
Canadian maritimes and high pressure begins to drift over the
central Great Lakes. Winds weaken as a result allowing for a gradual
decrease in wave heights over the course of the day in the Lake
Huron nearshore. High pressure departs early Thursday ahead of a
deepening low expected to track northeast from the central Plains
into the northern Great Lakes by Friday. As a result, winds will
increase out of the SW Thursday morning and quickly veer to SE over
the course of the day. Warm air advection Thursday night during SE
flow currently looks to create a temperature inversion limiting the
degree to which stronger winds aloft mix to the surface. However,
the depth of the low will generate a tight pressure gradient over
Lake Huron that still capable of generating low-end gales so a Gale
Watch has been issued. The Watch continues through Friday as an
arctic cold front crosses the lakes Friday morning setting up strong
SW flow across the region. Gales potential is higher with this flow
regime as cold air advection over the lakes will create an unstable
thermal profile.

Deep layer dry and stable conditions will prevail throughout
Southeast Michigan overnight. This ensures clear skies persist
across the lowest 10k ft. A lower coverage of stratocumulus may
emerge downwind of lake Huron Wednesday. However, any development is
currently forecast to hold east of the terminal corridor. Northwest
winds generally below 10 knots overnight and Wednesday.

A strong low pressure system remains on schedule to move through the
Great Lakes Thursday and Friday. The track of the system from
Illinois toward the Straits favors a mix of wet snow and rain for SE
Michigan beginning late Thursday lasting into Friday morning. The
latest data supports a general 2 to 4 inch snow accumulation for the
Tri Cities and northern Thumb regions tapering down to around 1 inch
toward the Ohio border where the chance of rain is greater.

The system also brings a strong cold front through Great Lakes early
Friday. West wind possibly gusting near 45 mph is projected to bring
arctic air into southeast Michigan through the day into next weekend.
