.Expect areas of freezing drizzle or freezing rain to develop
Saturday morning over central to northern Iowa. The freezing
precipitation is likely to persist and even increase in intensity
during the afternoon hours. There will be a period of a wintry
mix of freezing rain and snow in the late afternoon into early
evening hours before switching over to all snow. There is the
potential for a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice accrual over
the northeast part of the state. This ice will not only cause
hazardous travel conditions, but with the strong east winds, this

Southeast winds today have helped to increase warm air advection
across the state this afternoon with portions of central and
southern Iowa climbing into the mid to upper 30s by 2 pm. This has
also aided moisture transport into the area out of the gulf, which
has allowed cloud cover to steadily increase through out the day.
Meanwhile low pressure has been building to the west off the Rockies
and into the Plains. Initial isentropic lift across the area in
the overnight hours and early Saturday morning will result in a
freezing drizzle situation across portions of western Iowa. Model
soundings indicate appreciable low level moisture with surface
temperatures below freezing, show a classic freezing drizzle
setup. As the main system arrive kinematic lift will increase with
precipitation expanding across Iowa though Saturday morning. The
freezing line bisects the state, making for a very messy and
nuanced precipitation type forecast throughout the day. Right now
data indicates that areas roughly along and south of I-80 will
see mostly rain to start, though some minor freezing rain/drizzle
will be possible. North of I-80 expect to see more freezing rain
through the afternoon. By late afternoon into early evening a
gradual transition over to snow will occur, with snow lingering
overnight and ending from west to east on Sunday morning.

Models continue to vary, significantly in some cases, which increase
the difficulty of an already challenging weather scenario. Overall
the GFS and Euro show a similar synoptic progression of the cyclone
aloft as it moves across the midwest, and QPF and 2m temperatures
are also very similar. Differences lie aloft, where the GFS favors a
stronger warm nose that is strong enough to put a damper on snow
accumulations. Though the 12z GFS was cooler than the 06z run,
snow accumulations are still generally in the 1-3 inch range over
the NE quadrant of the state. Meanwhile, the Euro continues to
favor a colder solution with a swath of moderate to heavy snow
across central to eastern Iowa. Hi resolution models appear split
between the two solutions and hit harder on the mix precipitation
types, including ice accumulation. The HREF is particularly robust
is with ice accumulations, though those are likely overdone in
areal coverage. Soundings are tricky, with many models favoring a
deep isothermal layer on either side of freezing. Minor
temperatures changes, including any wet bulb effects due to latent
heat release with rain falling on snow pack, could have pretty
big impacts on precipitation type and subsequent accumulations.
Based on synoptic and hires sounding and plane view data, have
opted for a scenario that favors more ice accumulation central and
north with snow central and east. A wild card as this storm plays
out will be the deep snow pack and how it modifies the boundary
layer, influencing precipitation type. Right now the forecast
reflects a widespread 1 to 3 inches of snow with a tenth or less
of ice accumulation central and north within a winter weather
advisory. Towards east-central Iowa 2 to 4 inches of snow and a
tenth to perhaps a quarter inch of ice accumulation is possible.
The mix of higher ice and snow accumulations could be particularly
hazardous which is why a winter storm warning has been issued for
that area.

Western ridging will help to kick this system out of the area and
enhance warm air advection into the area for the first half of
next week. By late next week another robust system is expected to
roll through the area, however there is still considerable
uncertainty in how that system will evolve based on the current
system progression. Will be worth monitoring in the coming days as
the system gets closer.

the evening. By Saturday morning sites will drop to IFR or even
LIFR categories with decreasing cigs and visibility restrictions
due to falling precipitation. An initial wintry mix Saturday will
transition over to mainly snow Saturday evening beyond the
current period.
