Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 328 AM CST Thu Jan 14 2021 ...Blizzard Conditions This Evening into Friday... .SHORT TERM.../Today through Friday/ Issued at 328 AM CST Thu Jan 14 2021 Confidence: Medium to High Key Points...rapidly deepening low pressure this afternoon and tonight will take a very rare path across Iowa and the Middle Mississippi River Valley resulting in heavy snow and persistent strong winds especially west of the I35 corridor late tonight and Friday resulting in blizzard conditions for most of the overnight hours and Friday. Along the I35 corridor, the winds may be strongest from 4 am to about 8 am Friday and then weaken at times through midday and then increasing again in the afternoon as the system pulls southeast. This will result in intermittent blizzard conditions from north central to southern Iowa along the I35 corridor during Friday. In this area we will continue to monitor that aspect of the upcoming event. Main concern this morning will be a period of light rain moving into the area along the first pacific front. Though there may be some snow mixed at times northwest toward the noon hour into the afternoon, most of the north will receive light rain and possibly a short period of light freezing rain northeast. With warmer air at the surface tracking east with the front, impacts are not expected to be that great this morning. Tonight the main upper level low will amplify as colder air wraps into the system. The surface low is expected to be between Moline and LaCrosse by 00z and then consolidate over the next 6 hours in southwest Wisconsin. Over the next 12 hours the storm will actually pivot and back into eastern Iowa taking the nearly stacked upper low back into our area as well...providing for a prolonged period of more or less continuous light snow with about +2 inches every 6 hours. Though the system will fill with time and weaken, the strong H850 winds on the back side will remain strong in a zone of moderate cold air advection from this evening into Friday morning. Some weak warm air advection will propagate around the system and move south which will weaken the wind gusts a bit with time Friday. Also, the strongest winds will remain on the backside of the low at the sfc, so as the low backs west tomorrow...the blizzard conditions will tend to move west as the low wobbles a bit. Winds will reach 35 to 45 mph at times west and about 25 to 35 mph in the winter storm warning area. The advisory area will see winds of 15 to 25 mph at times. This is the reason for the winter wx advisories/buffer of winter storm warnings/and then blizzard warnings west. We expect that the buffer counties where winter storm warnings are currently in effect will see near to blizzard conditions early Friday morning during the pre- dawn hours; part of the morning commute... then lessening winds during the remainder of the morning into the early afternoon. There is a signature for sfc wind gusts to increase again above 30kt in the afternoon toward the 3 pm to 6 pm hour so this area may again see some challenges then. Though the bulk of the storm will be over by 00z Saturday; some lingering light snow and weaker wind will linger toward 06z. Most likely this period will be handled by a weather statement. Snowfall amounts will vary quite a bit, but generally with expected qpf of 0.30 to nearly 1 inch in the far north, snowfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches near the IA-MO border to up to 8 or more inches north will be likely. The I35 corridor may be favored for a spike of 5 to 6 inches depending on the eventual wobbling track of the system as it edges southeast Friday afternoon. .LONG TERM.../Friday Night through Wednesday/ Issued at 328 AM CST Thu Jan 14 2021 Confidence: Medium Overall the remainder of the forecast will be quieter, but we have a couple of weak northwest flow systems tracking southeast late Saturday night into Sunday and again Monday into Monday night. Each may deposit a dusting to an inch or so of snow with a quick pulse of moderately cold air each time. Temperatures next week will range from the 20s/30s for highs to the teens for lows. Given our immediate concerns, will not go into much more detail for now. && .AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night/ Issued at 1135 PM CST Wed Jan 13 2021 VFR conditions will deteriorate over the next several hours as a large winter system moves into the area. Cigs will begin dropping to MVFR during the morning hours with winds increasing shortly thereafter. At KFOD/KDSM a period of LLWS is possible for a few hours this morning before flow becomes unidirectional. Precipitation will begin as -RASN with a brief lull in the afternoon. By Thursday evening the next wave will arrive as all snow. Combined with gusty winds, expect to see further vis reductions to IFR.
