What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter weather advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Des Moines, IA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter weather advisory went out at Mar 13, 11:41 PM CST, 3 hours 21 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Mar 13, 11:41 PM CST, 3 hours 21 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
1141 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021

...Updated 06z Aviation...

.DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Saturday/
Issued at 257 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021

Forecast highlights:
-Winter Storm Sunday night into Monday
-Another storm system mid-week
-Big High Pressure late in the week into next weekend

Tonight through Monday...There's a long list of challenges to
consider during this time frame.

1. Strong Surface High over Great Lakes providing plenty of dry air
into the state causing a delay in pops.
2. Precipitation type - most likely is either rain or snow, but some
sleet is possible
3. Stout east winds related to both the pressure
gradient and some mixing.
4. Omega bullseye within the dendritic layer in northern Iowa
should provide intense snowfall rates by Sunday night.
5. Snow consistency appears to be mainly wet/sticky with onset
and likely for entire event with low snow ratios.
6. Sharp rain/snow gradient on the south/southwest edge of the
snow band.

Large area of low pressure slowly moves east out of the Central
Rockies and across Kansas/Oklahoma Sunday into Monday. The 500mb
trough becomes negatively titled over the region by late Sunday
night and then finally exits or gets sheared apart by the upper
flow Monday night. The surface low by late Sunday night deepens to
around 996mb over the TX/OK panhandles but weakens slightly by
Monday afternoon as it enters the Ozarks. Out ahead of the surface
low, good moisture transport and isentropic lift enter the
southwest portion of the state past 06z tonight and gradually push
east/northeast during the day Sunday. One the forecast problems
is with the stubborn surface high pressure over the Great Lakes
providing a shield of dry air over the state and soundings take
very long to completely saturate Sunday. Delayed the onset of
precipitation considerably from southwest to northeast Sunday
morning and even some areas may not see any precipitation until
the afternoon hours. Isentropic lift and moisture transport
continue into the state Sunday and the condensation pressure
deficit finally drops under 20mb by the late afternoon hours over
the entire forecast area. Still, forecast soundings per NAM/GFS
keep the fairly deep dry layer below 850mb through the morning
hours across central Iowa and over the north likely not until past
00z Monday. MCW, ALO, FOD soundings remain dry below 850mb
through at least 03z Monday.

The southwest to south-central should see some rain beginning
between 06z-09z Sunday. The other issue is with strong winds
developing during the day and even though not anticipating any
snow until late Sunday night, certainly with the decent crosswind
and rain, traveling should prove challenging during the day Sunday
into Sunday night. Certainly could witness some wind gusts over
40 mph late Sunday morning into the afternoon hours across the
west to southwest and issued a Wind Advisory in this location.

For the snow and other precipitation type by Sunday night into
Monday. As mentioned, soundings don't completely saturate until
late Sunday night across northern Iowa. However, there is intense
omega within the the dendritic layer (which is completely
saturated by 03z Monday), confident the snow will saturate the
column quicker than what the forecast soundings suggest.
Regardless, impacts from the falling snow look to begin overnight
Sunday night into Monday and delayed the start time of the Winter
Storm Watch. Soundings remain nearly isothermal along the 0C with
intermittent brief and very tiny mid-level warm layer sneaking
into late Sunday night into Monday and may result in brief periods
of sleet with the onset. This is mainly along the southern fringe
of the snow band, so Highway 30 to Interstate 80 areas. The
consistency of the snow likely to remain fairly wet and sticky and
low confidence in how quickly the snow will begin to accumulate.
Snow ratios remain low, roughly around 8:1 across the north b/t
06-12z Monday. Certainly some melting is likely as it hits the
ground, especially the hard surfaces. Still, with the tight
pressure gradient and some mixing resulting in some wind gusts
over 30 knots at times and impacts will be certainly visibility
issues early Monday. Also, slightly higher confidence in the rain
switching to snow further south and expanded the Watch a few
counties southward. The other change was extended the expiration
until the early evening Monday with snow looking to still be
falling Monday afternoon. Confidence was borderline in upgrading
and may reason holding off for now was the fact the delay in the
snow and even all precipitation and models continue to trend with
the slower progression of the low pressure. Thus, higher
confidence with a bigger impact during the commute Monday morning.

Tuesday through Thursday...Another low pressure system looks to
impact portions of the state by Wednesday into Wednesday night.
The surface low deepens to around 991mb according to the GFS. The
low tracks across Missouri and the latest ECMWF is slower and
further south than the GFS. Certainly potential for some snow over
southern Iowa along with decent winds by the afternoon and
evening.

Friday and Saturday...large area of high pressure builds into the
region late in the week and provides warmer temperatures and dry
conditions during this time.

&&

.AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday night/
Issued at 1138 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021

Rain showers are moving from southwest to northeast. As they move
northeast, they will have a lot of dry air to contend with.
However, there will be enough forcing to eventually saturate and
allow rain to reach the surface at DSM, FOD, and OTM. MCW and ALO
are expected to remain in the dry area. For Sunday, conditions
should stay at least MVFR, and with VFR for much of the period.
Gusty winds will likely be a bigger issue than CIGs or visibility
for this afternoon. Beyond the 06z TAF period, snow showers are
forecast across northern and central Iowa. For Monday, expect IFR
CIGs and reduced visibility with snow showers.
