Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 1146 AM CST Fri Feb 5 2021 .DISCUSSION.../Today through Thursday/ Issued at 430 AM CST Fri Feb 5 2021 Forecast Highlights: -- Snow chances highest Saturday, Sunday, and Monday -- Bitter cold conditions starting this weekend and persisting through next week with high likelihood of wind chill headlines Details: While road impacts linger over much of Iowa, especially east of I-35, early this morning, the blowing snow has ended and thus have allowed the Winter Weather Advisory to be cancelled. GOES-East Nighttime Microphysics RGB shows several patches or areas of cloud over Iowa. One was exiting the Waterloo area around 3am with KALO and media reports of a nice burst of snow. Another area is east and south of Des Moines and moving to the southeast with no snow observed at KDSM or our office. GOES-East upper level water vapor imagery shows the trough pushing into the western Great Lakes that brought the impactful weather on Thursday. Over the western US, one can see the overall northwesterly flow as broad troughing begins to set up over the northern US, which will help to foster numerous shortwave troughs passing through the region bringing snow chances in the coming days along with setting the stage for a prolonged period of bitter cold. For today, a subtle shortwave with limited moisture and lacking much in the way of QG convergence will pass largely southwest of the forecast area. While last two forecast cycles have had slight PoPs in our southern forecast area, have removed them since guidance tonight is showing little if any snow passing through the region. Farther north, gusty winds today may cause patchy blowing snow, mainly in rural areas. Observations at the time of this writing show wind gusts similar or perhaps a little under what will occur during the daytime hours over north central Iowa. One of the reason for canceling the headline was that Iowa DOT plow cameras and surface observations were not showing any reduction in visibility given similar wind gusts that are expected later today. So, will monitor things as the day dawns. Tonight will be a mild night relatively speaking compared to the coming nights over the next 7 days. Temperatures over northern Iowa will dip below 0 and wind chill values may drop to around -20F for several hours. Given the even colder nights ahead, figure an SPS if anything could cover this potential tonight, especially given that it is going into a weekend and lesser concerns about school and work activities. More on the bitter cold after we discuss the rounds of snow potential. A stronger shortwave trough/PV anomaly will rotate around the upper level low pressure over southern Ontario and bring a period of light snow to southern Iowa and points south on Saturday. Cross sections and forecast soundings show a fairly saturated profile and about 5000 feet of that will be within the dendritic growth zone (DGZ). However, much of the lift is above the DGZ so this may limit the efficiency of the snow. Snow ratios were bumped up as NBM was at the bottom of all guidance. Deterministic output along with locally run Cobb output suggests anywhere from around 15:1 to 25:1. Given the lift is above the DGZ, stayed in the upper teens to one for snow ratios. Snow rates will generally be between a quarter and a half an inch per hour. These rates along with winds averaging 10 to 15 mph with gusts to around 20 mph may cause some reduction in visibility and there could also be a bit of blowing snow. Snow totals will be highest near the Missouri border where near 4 inches may fall with amounts tapering off to around 1 inch near Highway 30. A winter weather advisory was contemplated for far southern Iowa, but with much of the snow not making its way into our area until after 12z Saturday, decided to hold off. The next round of snow will pass through the region as yet another fast moving shortwave trough passes southwest of Iowa. NBM PoPs were woefully underdone based off of deterministic guidance. Looking at ensembles, both the ECEns and GEFS show snow passing over parts of Iowa with the GEFS more over the southwestern half of the state compared to the ECEns. Thus, PoPs were upped from Sunday morning through Sunday evening. Unlike on Saturday, saturation in the DGZ along with lift this time is expected. The GFS has a colder profile so the depth of saturation within the DGZ is less than the NAM. This results in lower snow ratios in the middle teens compared to the NAM, which ranges from 20-25:1. This round of snow is expected to bring around 1 to 2 inches on average and winds look a bit lighter than on Saturday so blowing snow should be even less of a concern. Yet another round of snow is expected to spread across Iowa on Monday in the fast flow aloft. While there is overall agreement amongst the deterministic and ensemble solutions of snow, there is more spread in the ensemble members on the location. For this round, have not strayed away from NBM as southern Iowa seems to have the highest chances for the snow. Saturation and lift within the DGZ should once again occur leading to another higher snow ratio event. Beyond Monday, predictability of additional snow chances lowers. As for the bitter cold, arctic air will settle over the northern states. There will be a couple of surges of even colder air Sunday night into early next week and then again late next week. Saturday night will likely see the first wind chill headline as temperatures drop below zero across Iowa. ECMWF extreme forecast index and shift of tails from 12z Thursday continues to highlight parts of Iowa from Sunday night through Friday, though values are not so extreme that any record low temperatures are forecast at this point. Still, a prolonged period of bitter cold with wind chill values ranging and averaging from around 20 below zero over southern Iowa to around 30 below zero over northern Iowa in the overnight and morning hours is forecast. The worst conditions with wind chill values of 25 to around 35 below zero are looking to be Monday night/Tuesday morning, Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, and Thursday night/Friday morning. && .AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon/ Issued at 1142 AM CST Fri Feb 5 2021 A mix of MVFR and VFR conditions this afternoon. Several obs across the northern half of Iowa showing cigs around 1.5 kft despite limited evidence on satellite imagery except some shallow convective streaks over far northern Iowa. Much of this is likely lofted ice crystals with Arctic intrusion and left over blowing snow from Thu. Gusty northwest winds will persist this afternoon then diminish some overnight.
