.DISCUSSION...(This afternoon through Wednesday)

Summary...An active week of weather is expected. A shortwave
moving across the area today will bring light snow to the area
through this evening. Heavier snow due to lake effect/enhancements
should continue to affect southern Cook county this morning.
Attention then turns to a stronger system for Friday through
Saturday, which has the potential to produce significant snowfall
for parts of northwest Wisconsin. The weather quiets down through
early next week, but with potential for another winter storm
system for the middle part of next week.

The shortwave we have been monitoring is in the process of moving
across the area this morning, and is expected to continue to move
through the area today. The south flow across Lake Superior is
expected to produce lake effects or at least enhancement for
higher snowfall totals along the North Shore, predominantly for
the southern Cook zone. There will be some enhancements farther
south along the North Shore and farther inland as well, but I
expect the highest snowfall totals for the southern Cook zone,
where 3 to 6 inches are possible. We have a lot of radar returns
around the area right now, but we are only seeing ground truth for
the band that is draped across the Iron Range and east out over
the lake, though this is just in the last few hours. Considering
the significant dry layers on the 00z KINL and KGRB soundings we
have had some saturation issues with the relatively dry air at the
lowest levels that has had to be overcome overnight. Now that the
snow is beginning to reach the ground, I expect accumulations to
start piling up along the North Shore for the next few hours.

Attention now turns to the system for Friday through Saturday,
which we have been watching for a few days now. As compared to
yesterday, the track has shifted back north again, and now we are
looking at plowable snowfall amounts once again for parts of
northwest Wisconsin. We will be on the north side of this system,
so we do not have any precipitation type issues, and all snow
should fall across northern Wisconsin counties. Snowfall amounts
have crept back up over 6 inches for much of Price county with
lighter amounts to the north, with little if any snow expected
around the Twin Ports. The strong surface low starts out Friday
morning over eastern Colorado, rolling east along the mid level
baroclinic zone, moving across Iowa by Friday evening, then
northeast across northern lower Michigan by Saturday morning. The
models have come to a fairly good consensus on this, so we have
increasing confidence on the potential for significant snowfall,
so a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of northwest
Wisconsin.

After another round of cold temperatures for Friday and Saturday
nights, there should be a gradual warm-up through mid week. Am
concerned that the current NBM values are too warm during this
time range, given our recent snowfall, despite the strong warm air
advection aloft. I anticipate needing to lower these values as we
get closer in time to them.

The models are indicating another potential for a winter storm in
the Wednesday-Thursday time range. However, there are a lot of
differences between the models, and we are going to have to wait
and see for the details on this system.

Low pressure will cause a messy weather pattern across the area
today with a variety of flight categories. Snow showers will
temporarily reduce vsbys in HYR to LIFR within the next hour. Model
guidance has an MVFR stratus deck propagating through this
afternoon. There are hints of embedded IFR cigs within that stratus
deck, but these IFR cigs appear to be sporadic. HIB and INL would be
the most likely to see any IFR cigs this afternoon, but confidence
wasn't high enough to reduce category at this time. As the low
pressure exits the area, expect conditions to improve to VFR and
remain VFR tonight and into tomorrow morning.

Winds are out of the south at 10 to 15 knots with gusts to near
25 knots with isolated 30 to 35 knot winds. Holding off on a Gale
Warning at the moment as it is thought that the winds are transient
in nature and will decreasing within the next hour or two. By
this evening winds will switch around to the southwest at 15 to
20 knots with gusts to 25 knots. A Small Craft Advisory is in
effect until tomorrow morning for Grand Portage to Silver Bay and
Port Wing eastward to Saxon Harbor. Winds are expected to switch
to the west late this evening and decrease towards morning.

Gusty south to southwest winds will continue today and tonight and
produce hazardous conditions for small craft along parts of the
North and South Shores. Small Craft Advisories remain in effect
into tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

An area of low pressure will move through the region Saturday and
as it exits may create a period of hazardous winds and waves
Saturday into Sunday.
