Summary: Our Winter Storm is still ongoing across the northern
portions of the Northland. An additional couple of inches is still
expected across the North Shore before the system moves off to the
east. Only a brief period of dry conditions before another system
moves in Tuesday morning. The North Shore will once again see the
brunt of the storm due to both lake and terrain enhancements.
Current projected accumulations for the second system along North
Shore are around 4-6 inches. The rest of the region will still see
widespread snowfall with accumulations of a couple of inches. Colder
temperatures pivot in from the northwest Tuesday night with possible
wind chill advisories being needed for our western counties.
Surface low pressure continues to propagate across northern MN this
afternoon pulling the rest of our winter system out of the region.
The morning soundings did highlight some dry air entrainment within
the DGZ zone heading across northern WI. This lack of ice crystals
aloft has translated into some freezing drizzle at the surface with
minimal ice accumulations being reported. Satellite reveals the coma
head of the low moving over Duluth this afternoon. The GOES 16 Cloud
Top Phase shows much colder air wrapped around the center of the low
reintroducing ice crystals aloft for some additional snow
accumulations this evening. One of the concerns in the near term is
the increased winds on the backside of the low pressure system. As
high pressure tries to nudge in from the west we are seeing a strong
pressure gradient set up. Upstream observations showed wind speeds
gusting near 40 mph this morning in western MN. Models have been
struggling with the strength of this gradient so we have decided to
up the winds out of caution. Additionally, observations are also
indicating greatly reduced visibility despite snowfall having moved
out of the region. This is likely the fresh snowpack being whipped
around by the strong winds and will likely continue into the early
evening hours.
High pressure will move in overnight ushering out the remaining
precipitation out of the region. This lull in the winter systems
will be short lived as another round of snow is set to move in
Tuesday morning. Upper level troughing extending across western
CONUS has another Colorado Low moving across the Midwest. An
inverted trough will slide through the Northland with decent
synoptic drivers in place to produce widespread snowfall once again.
This system does not have quite the moisture sources as the previous
system. Initially the system will encounter a pocket of dry air in
the lower levels but soundings show saturation down to the surface
fairly quickly with snow beginning in the Brainerd Lakes region a
little after sunrise. Upper level forcing will propagate northeast
through the day with widespread snowfall expanding as well. Due to
the southeasterly component of winds with this system the North
Shore will once again get a dousing of lake enhanced snowfall. The
snowfall rates along the shoreline for the evening may be 1 - 1.5
inches per hour. The system is expected to exit after midnight with
snowfall tapering off. Storm totals will be highest along the North
Shore once again with totals near 4-6 inches. Elsewhere across the
region will likely see an additional couple of inches. Warnings will
likely be needed along the North Shore with additional headlines

Surface high pressure ridges in Tuesday with frigid air filtering
in from the northwest. The coldest portion of the air mass wil
reside over the Northern Plains and slightly spill over into
northern MN. Our western counties may need a wind chill advisory
Tuesday night. Highs on Wednesday will be in the single digits with
slightly warmer temperatures in northern WI. A weak shortwave is
advertised within the deterministic models for Thursday and could
bring some light snowfall across the region.

Heavy snow is still falling in locations around the Northland with
flight categories varying widely across the area. The low
pressure is centered right around the Hibbing area and will move
off the north and and east this afternoon. Freezing rain has been
reported across NW WI. So a very messy system... Strong westerly
winds will fill in behind the departing low causing blowing and
drifting snow mainly south of US 2 through 03Z. The ceiling
forecast is tough as the clouds rotate around this low, so lower
confidence in those especially with clearing approaching from the
southwest. Conditions will temporarily improve overnight before
the next system arrives.
A second system will move in late in the TAF period bringing more
IFR snow.

Center of a low pressure system was located over the Arrowhead this
evening drawing in strong winds across the Lake. Winds at the head
of the Lake have switched to out of the southwest with gusts upwards
of 40 kts at times. High waves of 8 to 11 ft continue to ransack the
North Shore. As the evening progresses the southwesterly winds will
overtake all of Lake Superior and wave heights will begin to shift
away from the North Shore. Winds are expected weaken overnight with
waves dropping below Small Craft criteria Tuesday morning.
Another winter system is set to move across the Lake by Tuesday
afternoon with winds becoming hazardous to small vessels once again.
Winds will begin southeasterly and veer throughout the evening
allowing wave heights to build along the North shore once again.
