Area forecast discussion, Feb 8, 11:48 AM CST, 3 hours 10 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...(Today through Sunday)
Issued at 414 AM CST Mon Feb 8 2021

Not much change in the going forecast this morning, with frigid
temperatures and wind chills continuing across the Northland
today through at least Tuesday morning. Chances of light lake-
effect snow will continue through the period, especially over the
Bayfield Peninsula.

As of 0930z/330 AM CST this morning, widespread wind chills
between -35 to -45 were observed over far northern Minnesota,
with wind chills between -25 to -35 elsewhere. A large upper-level
low has loitered over far northern Ontario Canada, which has
helped to usher in our frigid air mass. Regarding the cold, we are
still expecting another night of dangerously cold temperatures and
wind chills for tonight/Tuesday morning, with wind chills between
40 to 45 below zero over far northern Minnesota, where we
currently have a Wind Chill Warning in effect. The only adjustment
to the headlines we made was to extend the Wind Chill Advisory
currently in effect for Pine to Price county to run through
Tuesday morning. Overall, it appears that a lack of cloud cover
will allow temperatures to fall pretty quickly via radiational
cooling, although there are some hints at some mid-level clouds
that could translate over east-central Minnesota into northwest
Wisconsin. I've leaned towards the 25th percentile of guidance
for low temperatures tonight, which should range from around 25
below zero along the Borderland to the 15 to 20 degree below zero
range to the south. The Wind Chill Warning placement appears to be
good as wind chills generally along and north of U.S. Highway 2
will be -40 or colder. The overall pattern won't change much
through the week, with the upper-level low lingering over Canada,
and the arctic air mass remains in place. We will likely need
additional wind chill headlines throughout the week, perhaps a
Wind Chill Warning or two, but most likely widespread Wind Chill
Advisories each night of the week.

Chances of lake-effect snow will continue along the South Shore,
thanks to generally west to northwest low-level flow and bitterly
cold 850 mb temperatures. The column appears to be rather
moisture-starved, plus the temperatures are progged to be colder
than the dendritic snow growth zone, so snow ratios will actually
be lower than usual in lake-effect snow scenarios. In terms of
snowfall amounts, we leaned towards the high-resolution models,
which only gave around 0.15" of QPF in total over the tip of the
Bayfield Peninsula in northern Wisconsin through Wednesday
afternoon. This results in around 1 to 2 inches of new snow for
the same time frame. It's not much accumulation, but it could be
enough to result in some slippery stretches on untreated roadways.

Looking at Friday through the upcoming weekend, the large-scale
pattern appears to change, with an amplifying upper-level trough
building into the region. There are some significant timing
differences among the deterministic guidance, with the ECMWF
showing the trough much farther east than the GFS and GEM models.
It doesn't appear that we will see the potential for heavier
accumulations, but a round of light snow isn't out of the
question, based on the signals from the GFS and GEM. There are
even some significant differences in the magnitude of the
temperatures, so much uncertainty remains with the latter half of
the forecast period.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1148 AM CST Mon Feb 8 2021

VFR conditions are expected as skies remain mostly clear. Cloud
cover will be mostly limited to lake effect clouds over Lake
Superior and portions of the Bayfield Peninsula. While some models
were suggesting light snow and IFR conditions this afternoon across
the Arrowhead and northwest WI, confidence is high in VFR conditions
persisting. Expect gusty winds to continue until this evening.
