Summary: We have several chances at precipitation through the
forecast period. We have an exiting shortwave, and we have some
lingering light rain with it across our far east this morning.
Then, we have a wet spring system that moves through the area late
tonight through Tuesday and Wednesday, which should bring a round
of much needed precipitation. The active pattern continues
through next weekend with some smaller chances for precipitation
through Sunday.

Today, the cold front and associated short wave will exit the
area to the east. The precipitation has been slow to come to an
end, but should be out of the forecast area by mid morning, if not
sooner. Some hi-res models are depicting lingering showers over
the Arrowhead into late morning and am carrying some slight chance
pops, but do not expect much out of these, considering the dry
airmass coming into the area from the west behind the cold front.
The front is only going to get about half way through the forecast
area today before stalling and washing out somewhat, so we will
have a large temperature range across the area this afternoon.
Highs should get into the upper 50s once again over northwest
Wisconsin, but stay mostly in the 40s for northern Minnesota.

Attention then turns to the strong upper low that swings out of
the 4 corners region this morning and pulls northeast, sliding
past eastern Kansas on Tuesday, and through Wisconsin on
Wednesday. The broader upper level flow has a broad ridge over the
East Coast, and a deep broad trough over the western half of the
CONUS, producing the steeply angled trajectory of this system.
This system will slowly push the front back north tonight and
between the warm air advection and resulting frontogenesis and
some weak leading shortwaves, should bring a band of precipitation
into the forecast area by morning. Have slowed down the advance
of this precipitation, but not by overly much as this system has a
good tap of moisture out of the Gulf due to the large amplitude
this system has. The warm air advection wing of precipitation will
lift slowly north across the area on Tuesday, with the main upper
low with the stronger dynamics and isentropic lift spreading into
the area for Tuesday afternoon and night before finally pulling
off to the east Wednesday afternoon and evening. Precipitation
type are a fairly big concern with this system, with long periods
of rain, with some rain snow mixture tonight and Tuesday night,
and some snow accumulations during the overnight Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning before the precip ends. The latest model runs
have come in a little warmer, so have reduced the snowfall
accumulations somewhat for the deterministic forecast, but
uncertainty remains fairly high and I expect further changes with
this. There is also some potential for freezing rain in the
models, but any instances of it are likely to be bracketed by
rain/snow, and impacts should be minor, if anything.

A follow-up system should affect areas mostly east of the
forecast area in the Thursday night and Friday time frame, but
with the uncertainty going on in the nearer terms, confidence is
low in this system and have kept pops on the low side. We will
also be colder with this system, bringing higher chances for
accumulating snow, assuming it does affect the area.

More chances for precipitation are lined up for the weekend, but
models are in poor agreement out here, and have low confidence at
this time in these. Again, we will be cooler than we have been
through the weekend, so we have higher chances for accumulating
snow with any precipitation chances.

An area of IFR clouds is quickly lifting and dissipating to MVFR
before leaving the area VFR for most of the forecast. A large area
of low pressure will arrive Tue/Wed and will cause low cigs and
vsbys and probably some gusty winds at KDLH. Precipitation type
may also be fluctuating between rain/snow.

Quiet today with southwest winds of 5 to 10 knots.

A strong area of low pressure approaches the area on Tuesday
which will bring rain and increased winds. Winds are expected to
veer to the northeast on Tuesday and strengthen to 15 to 20 knots.
Wind gusts on Tuesday may reach up to 30 knots. At this time,
gales are possible, but Small Craft Advisories are more likely.
Waves may build to 6 to 8 feet on Tuesday, except in Chequamegon
Bay where waves will be around 1-3 feet in the ice free areas. The
hard part of this forecast is how much of the stronger winds will
be able to surface as the lake remains colder than the air mass
giving a bit of cushion.

A prolonged period of precipitation will move into the region for
late tonight. It looks to start out as rain but mix with or
transition to snow for portions of the region. Some accumulating
snow is possible in parts of northeastern Minnesota.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Mixed precipitation will continue through Wednesday. Precipitation
should primarily fall as rain during the day, with some pockets of
snow or mix in far northeastern Minnesota, and mix or snow at
night. Some accumulating snow is possible in parts of
northeastern Minnesota. There is a possibility for snowfall
amounts greater than two inches north and east of the Iron Range
with lesser amounts elsewhere.

Strong northeast winds are likely Tuesday into Wednesday morning

of western Lake Superior. Some gales are also possible, but
currently seem unlikely .
