.DISCUSSION...(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 452 PM CST Tue Nov 9 2021

Summary...A strong fall storm will affect the area tomorrow
through Friday, with potential for strong winds and snowfall
accumulations. Once that storm moves through we will have a
follow-up clipper on Sunday, along with lake effect snow chances
through the weekend along with colder than normal temperatures
that linger into next week.

A ridge of high pressure over the area this afternoon has kept
the weather quiet and dry, with high temperatures this afternoon
in the upper 40s to mid 50s. I expect this quiet weather continue
tonight and early Wednesday, with overnight lows tonight in the
20s to low 30s. The initial wave of precipitation with our late
week storm system moves into the area on Wednesday, with mainly
rain. There may be some mixed rain and snow during the afternoon,
but I do not expect any accumulation.

A negatively tilted, elongated trough from northwestern ND to
southern TX will continue to move eastward affecting the CWA by late
Wednesday evening. The models are finally coming together on a
solution which appears to bring a rain/snow mix to the far western
portion of the CWA. Felt the initial snow amounts were too high,
therefore, dropped the snow ratio initially given how saturated
the column is based on soundings and the forecasted surface
temperature. As the upper level trough transitions into an upper
level low pressure system a surface low pressure begins to develop
over northern Iowa, moves northeastward to northwestern WI and
deepens by mid-morning Thursday. This will allow for the winds to
turn northwestward bringing in much cooler air to the region by
Thursday evening into Friday morning. Due to that, all
precipitation that is falling will likely transition into all
snow. Snow totals will be the highest over Koochiching County to
northern St. Louis County with lesser amounts south and east.

Friday night and Saturday snow showers will slowly diminish over
the area, even as lake effect affects the South Shore with a
decent cold pool aloft. A fast moving clipper style system moves
through the region Saturday night and Sunday. Most of this system
will miss the forecast area to the south, but what falls should be
all snow. It is too soon to determine snowfall amounts, but with
the cold pool aloft, somebody will have to shovel it. It looks
like another shortwave may moves through Monday night and Tuesday,
but there is very poor agreement between models on it, so the
forecast is dry for now. The cold pool remains over the area aloft
with broad troughing over the eastern half of the CONUS through
at least mid week, so colder than normal temperatures can be
expected through the week.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)

VFR conditions are expected until tomorrow evening and night, as
a low pressure system approaches from the west, bringing MVFR
ceilings lowering to possibly IFR ceilings. Wind gusts up to 20
kts are expected for the afternoon and evening tomorrow, before
decreasing again overnight. This will leave the possibility for
significant low level wind shear approximately from 00Z to 06Z on
Thursday at all terminals. Confidence was not high enough to
include in the TAF, but may be included in future TAFs.

East winds are expected to ramp up significantly Wednesday
afternoon and night as a strong low pressure system moves toward
the region. Gale force winds are expected for at least a portion
of western Lake Superior Wednesday night through early Thursday,
with resulting building waves. A Gale Watch has been issued, and
variety of Gale Warnings and Small Craft Advisories may be needed
for a large portion of western Lake Superior for Wednesday through
Thursday.

northern St. Louis County and northern Itasca.

Lake effect precipitation is expected to linger along the South
Shore into the weekend with snowfall accumulations possible in
the northwest Wisconsin snow belts.
