.DISCUSSION...(This evening through Wednesday)

Thursday is the calm before the storm. Highs in the upper 50s to
lower 60s were seen across the CWA. Tranquil weather will continue
through Thursday evening before our next chance of precipitation
comes in Friday morning through the early afternoon. This will be
the start of a wet period for the Northland for the weekend into
early next week.

High pressure ridge will give way to a mid-level shortwave trough
moving in from eastern South Dakota.  With it will come light rain
showers with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. By Friday evening
we will see another shot of cold air as a stationary front starts to
move southeastward to northwestern WI. This cold air will allow the
rain to change over to snow. Snow amounts will be near an inch
northeast to a few tenths southwest.

A secondary trough will move in Saturday morning initially causing a
rain/snow mix changing to all rain by the afternoon. Snow
accumulations are expected to be less than a few tenths of an inch
across the CWA.

A stationary front and associated low pressure will be the focus of
precipitation chances for Sunday evening. Noticeable isentropic
lift at the 290 and 295K level support precipitation starting in
the morning as snow and changing to rain by the afternoon.

This pattern will continue into early next week with rain chances
through much of the early part of next week.

Low pressure moving into the area this morning will reduce cigs from
VFR to MVFR. Light rain will begin later this morning and continue
throughout the day. As the low propagates further into the area
today, IFR cigs will move in for all terminals except INL. There is
also the potential for fog development today, which will help to
maintain MVFR vsbys. Another round of precip tonight has the
potential to bring light snow and IFR conditions for all terminals
excluding HYR.

Winds will be or become southwest tonight from 5 to around 15
knots and continue into Friday with some gusts around 20 knots. A
cold front will move through the region Friday night shifting
winds to north from 10 to around 15 knots with higher gusts. Waves
may build to around 4 feet in spots along the South Shore possibly
leading to hazardous conditions for small craft. Winds will
become lighter on Saturday and be from the north to northeast.
