Issued at 1006 AM CDT Wed Apr 7 2021 Deformation zone rain will continue across most of northeast Minnesota today extending from a potent upper level low across southern Kansas. This deformation zone will slowly pivot westward through the day with a relative lull in precipitation expected for northwest Wisconsin and into the I-35 corridor late this morning and into the afternoon before the next surge associated with convection across southern Minnesota and Iowa arrives into the Northland. With daytime heating into the 60s and lower 70s with 50s dewpoints, thunderstorms are expected to be supported into northwest Wisconsin and towards the Hinckley area of Minnesota, with some potential for elevated storms from the Brainerd Lakes to the Twin Ports above the low level stable layer. && .DISCUSSION...(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 458 AM CDT Wed Apr 7 2021 Periods of showers and non-severe thunderstorms are expected for the next several days as an area of low pressure slowly moves across the region. Strong northeast winds can be expected near Lake Superior and inland between Hinckley and Duluth. Total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are forecast through Saturday morning. A cutoff low was centered over western Kansas early this morning. A closed surface low was located to the northeast of the upper- low over northeast Nebraska early this morning with a quasi- stationary front extending east-northeast across northern Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southern Wisconsin. This system will drift slowly northeastward to southern Minnesota and western Iowa by 12Z Thursday. Scattered rain showers and a few embedded thunderstorms percolated over the region near and ahead of the surface low. Look for rain chances to persist today through Saturday morning as the low pressure system meanders across the region. Confluent flow over the Northland and a warm nose aloft were contributing to weak instability and a few storms over our southern zones for much of the night. The instability was largely confined to our southernmost zones with the remainder of the area experiencing rain or rain showers. The quasi-stationary front should lift northward as a warm front this afternoon and have raised temperatures over northwest Wisconsin in response to the warm air advection. Similar situation is expected for Thursday and have raised temps over northwest Wisconsin for that day, as well. The NBM solution seemed workable and leaned heavily on it for temps today and Thursday. Strong northeast winds will develop later today. Gusts of 20 to 30 mph can be expected along the south shore of Lake Superior, the Twin Ports. The strong winds may penetrate as far southwest as Moose Lake and the I-35 corridor as far south as Hinckley. The system will push northeast of the Northland Saturday afternoon with precipitation forecast to taper off. Forecast models continue to indicate a cooler temperature trend early next week with another area of low pressure to move across the Upper Midwest. Precipitation chances remain in the forecast and, with colder temperatures aloft associated with the low pressure system, some of the precipitation may fall as snow. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning) Issued at 710 AM CDT Wed Apr 7 2021 Periods of showers and a few embedded thunderstorms are expected during this forecast period. Ceilings will generally trend lower with time as low pressure centered over eastern Nebraska slowly lifts northeastward into southern Minnesota by 12Z Thursday. The terminals most likely to see thunderstorms are BRD and HYR. DLH may hear a rumble of thunder this afternoon, too. Onshore flow off Lake Superior will result in IFR ceilings and gusty winds at DLH. Don't think we'll have an orographic fog potential until this afternoon at DLH.
