.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

Shortwave trough axis was along a Wichita-Oklahoma City line as of
midnight, exiting the region. Despite increasing subsidence, a
moist boundary layer was continuing to support stratus across the
southeast half of SW KS. Short term models show the stratus
persisting/expanding through sunrise, which is expected to hold
temperatures above freezing, from the mid 30s northwest to the mid
40s southeast.

After a long stretch of unseasonably cool temperatures, delightful
spring weather will finally arrive this weekend. Any stratus
Saturday morning will burn off much faster than Friday. Expect
nearly full sunshine by afternoon, with light winds. Light north
winds at sunrise will trend light and variable, and then light
SEly in the afternoon. South winds will become breezy at 20-30 mph
across the far western counties (adjacent to Colorado) in the late
afternoon. Temperatures will finally be allowed to return to near
normal, in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Saturday will be pick day
of the weekend, and the nicest day we have seen in a long time.

South winds will remain elevated and gusty Saturday night/Sunday
morning with 00z NAM forecasting a low level jet up to about
60 mph. Mixing will keep sunrise temperatures much milder Sunday,
in the 40s.

Models continue to show dramatic warming on Sunday, with zonal
flow aloft and lee troughing across eastern Colorado. 850 mb
temperatures soaring into the 20-26C range will support 80s in all
zones Sunday afternoon. The impressive warmup will be facilitated
by an increase in S/SW winds, averaging 25-35 mph. Fire danger
will be significant across western zones (west of US 83) where
full greenup has yet to occur.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Friday)

Models consistently forecast Monday to be the warmest (hottest?)
day of the forecast period. Aided by both SWly midlevel flow and
SWly downslope contributions at the ground, many locations are
expected to crack 90 for the first time this year. Southwest winds
will remain elevated and gusty, for a summer preview Monday
afternoon.

A large positively tilted longwave trough will impact SW KS
weather Tuesday and Wednesday, but there is still a lot left to be
determined with this system. After being highly consistent for
days, the latest 00z ECMWF run is much slower with the trough's
progression. The center of the trough at 7 pm Tuesday on previous
runs was near the Four Corners; now 00z ECMWF has a closed low
near San Diego 7 pm Tuesday, and still over New Mexico 7 pm
Wednesday. GFS of course continues to be much faster. Hard to say
anything about convection potential until timing issues are
resolved. That said, energized SW midlevel flow will likely help
the dryline initiate at least isolated storms on the high plains
Tuesday afternoon, with convection continuing to blossom
overnight, favoring the southeast counties. Any slowing of a
trough's progression is always a positive for SW KS pops, and
indeed NBM pops ticked noticeably upward through Wednesday into
the chance category. The coolest day associated with the trough
passage appears to be Wednesday, with highs in the 60s. 00z ECMWF
suggests another long stretch of warm dry quiet weather heading
into early May.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)

Based on Goes sat trends the stratus layer is beginning to recede
back to the north indicating a deepening of the sfc boundary
layer and the beginning of improving ceiling trend. HRRR model
eroded all this cloud cover away by around 19z or so, meaning, it
ought to be eroded out of the GCK terminal vicinity by 18z. We
will have to determine whether the clouds redevelop along this
stationary boundary again this evening; if it does it will again
be quite shallow and limited in areal coverage with lowest
ceilings close to the front. On the flip side, there may be
enough weak warm advection in the western counties to diminish
this surface stationary boundary altogether, so plenty of
uncertainty exists right now. Otherwise light surface winds areas
wide today will pick up early tomorrow morning with gusts around
20 knots and increasing beyond sunrise.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Dramatically warmer temperatures are expected Sunday afternoon.
Afternoon temperatures in the mid to upper 80s will push minimum
relative humidity to the 8-15% range along and west of US 83.
Strong southwest winds averaging 20-30 mph are expected, with
gusts near 40 mph. Red flag warning criteria is expected across
the western zones Sunday afternoon, and a fire weather watch has
been issued. Outdoor burning in areas where greenup has yet to
occur is strongly discouraged. Little change is expected Monday,
and another fire weather headline is expected to be required for
Monday.
