Light snow, reduced visibilities and very cold temperatures have
blanketed southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle
today as a cold dome centered over the Canadian border continues
to impact the region. Primary impacts include frigid temperatures,
and blowing and drifting snow, dropping visibilities to near a
half mile at times. Even still, with highs today in Dixon, WY in
the low 30s, it's evident that the stationary boundary circling
the dome is still in Wyoming and holding strong, though "warmer"
temperatures are not encompassing as much of the region as it has
previously in the last few days.

Bands of snow developed today along a primarily zonal flow, with
areas of moderate to heavy snowfall. Many locations have already
received 1 to 3 inches today and are still accumulating. It's a
difficult forecast as there is not a lot of liquid in the very dry
airmass, but high snow ratios have lead to decent accumulation.
Though, because the liquid to snow ratio is so high, blowing and
drifting snow has become commonplace across the region - with
noted accidents because of these impacts along area roadways.

Enhanced snowfall is still expected tonight as a series of
shortwaves pass through the upper level flow tonight and early
Saturday morning. Looking for a brief recess in heavier snow
totals tomorrow afternoon. This is one of the areas of uncertainty
because if there is no true break, and one snow system runs into
the next, then we may need to upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning in
areas under Winter Weather Advisories. To the west, as the next
round of snow pushes eastward into Carbon County, there will be a
period of snow squall potential, with upper level dynamic lift,
favorable 650 mb equivalent potential temperature, and a east and
southeast flow kicking in that may enhance the boundaries. What we
won't have is any sign of CAPE, which may make this an unrealistic
impact. This next system will bring a closed low across Colorado,
with wrap-around moisture under the previously mentioned east and
southeast flow.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)
Issued at 352 PM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

Bitter cold and dangerous wind chills expected across the region
Saturday night into Sunday morning, as the closed low system
passing around the cold dome drops the stationary front south of
the Colorado border, and the Canadian High drops south as well
into the Dakotas and eastern Minnesota. This will lead to wind
chill temperatures 30 to 40 below zero across the entirety of the
region. Additionally, wrap-around moisture will move into the I-80
corridor east of the Laramie Range and towards the north, for
several inches of snow over a relatively short period of time. At
this point, there is a Winter Weather Advisory out for the snow
amounts; however, as seems to be the theme of this system, there
is a lot of uncertainty with these amounts. As mentioned in the
short term, there could be snow ratios near 30:1, though this
time, the liquid amounts should be there. If this is the case, the
fluffy snow may add up more quickly than forecast. Additionally,
if there in no true break Saturday, we'll need a Warning. Lastly,
seeing the same signals as we saw over Carbon Saturday evening for
snow squall potential over areas east of the Laramie Range Sunday
afternoon...though again without any CAPE to support this signal.
Anyway, all this to say there are a lot of places this forecast
can go astray. Should also mention the strong winds we may get
across the I-80 corridor between Arlington and Elk MOuntain as the
front dives south; the gradient is certainly there, but the
gradient is in the wrong direction, therefore, it wouldn't be a
gap-wind with enhanced flow. Will have to monitor this one.

The heavier snow showers with this wrap around moisture should
tapper off and exit east with the low Sunday afternoon, with snow
covering the region in it's wake and feet of snow over the Sierra
Madres and Snowy Mountain Ranges, a welcome change to the dry La
Nina winter we've been having this year. Cold air will remain in
place however, with another bitterly cold and dangerous wind chill
period Sunday night into Monday... though Sunday's highs will
barely reach zero Sunday and wind chills sticking around 10 to 20
below. Will certainly need to expand the Wind Chill Advisory west
for Sunday and Monday, and maybe even upgrade a few zones to a
Warning.

The cold dome finally begins it's slow precession eastward on
Monday afternoon with a slow warming to follow into midweek. A
northwesterly flow will aid in getting us some warming as well
east of the Laramie Range under a downsloping/compressional
warming wind regime. W should all look forward to reaching the
mid-20s mid-week! Under this flow, some moisture will remain in
the forecast with additional snow accumulation expected over the
mountains Monday and Tuesday. Shortwaves passing through the
northwesterly flow aloft could also lead to a particularly breezy
day by the end of the week.

The Nebraska Panhandle sites continue to trend between IFR and LIFR
conditions until 18Z due to incoming snowfall. Southeastern Wyoming
sites temporally trend mostly VFR and MVFR but will possible drop
to IFR conditions by 03Z with incoming light snowfall. Cloud
ceilings persist in OVC and bases are low under 5k ft for all
sites across the CWA. Cloud cover will not lift for the remainder
of the TAf period. Winds will vary in direction but will remain
light under 10kts.

Fire weather concerns are low at this time with both snowfall and
very cold temperatures in place. Do not see a pattern change
until next week. Will need a deep trough to scour out the very
