.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)

Tonight, some scattered showers are expected around our CWA until
about midnight as Saturday's disturbance moves off to the northeast.
Carbon, Converse and Niobrara counties are most likely to see these
lingering showers. The Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges could see some
snow accumulation on the highest peaks. Gusty winds are also expected
across the area until about midnight.

Sunday and Monday look fairly quiet. Expect drier weather these days
as a fleeting ridge axis makes its way across the region. Cooler, but
more seasonable temperatures are expected. Sunday afternoon, areas
west of the Laramie Range could see some gusty winds. Just as quickly
as the ridge moves in, its out of our region Monday night, making way
for a potent upper-level trough. This system will be the primary
weather concern for the Tuesday and Wednesday time period.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

The models continue to gradually converge on a solution for the
strong low that drops to near the Four Corners Tuesday and then
lifts out close to Cheyenne and across the Nebraska panhandle on
Wednesday. There's pretty good agreement on the path and timing
now, though shifting the track a short distance could still make a
big difference. The surface low, and probably the upper low also,
will likely track just south and east of Cheyenne Wednesday
morning, with the best lift and precipitation a little further
north and west.

The lift on the northwest side of the low will work into the area
north of Rawlins Monday night, and slide ever so slowly eastward
during the day Tuesday. Temperatures will still be quite warm in
the southerly flow ahead of the trough axis, but some cooling will
set in over the same area with the lift. As a result, we could
have snow most of the day in the area between Rawlins and Casper,
with some rain showers on the edge around Laramie. The Wyoming
plains and Nebraska panhandle will be under the dry slot, but some
cooler air will be coming in from the east and northeast which
could eventually have some cloud cover. Rain showers may start to
spill onto the plains late in the day Tuesday, and rain may change
to snow around Laramie, but this will depend on the exact eastward
progression.

Tuesday night looks like the main event as the lower level low
develops east of the mountains and south of Cheyenne and the low
level flow starts to wrap around the low with better lift of the
warmer air. This should enhance the precipitation over southeast
Wyoming during the night. We should also develop a bit of a
barrier jet that may help provide a bit more cooling along the
east slopes of the Laramie Range along with enhancing the
convergence. This only lasts a few hours though, as the low is
speeding by and the low level flow should turn more westerly with
the lift passing by as we go into Wednesday morning. So the main
period of precipitation for the I-25 corridor will likely be in
the middle to late part of Tuesday night. It still looks like the
rain/snow line will be near Cheyenne and Douglas. Given the
barrier jet and strong lift, our feeling is it will still get cold
enough in the main precip area to get a little wet snow for a few
hours.

There's some concern about a more substantial snow in the synoptic
scale main precip band between Rawlins, Casper, and Douglas. Some
of this will depend how quickly the snow develops on Tuesday. If
it's early/cold, then this area could get significant snow
Tuesday/Tuesday night followed by the wind Wednesday. It's
probably going to be too warm in Douglas for big accumulations,
but the higher elevations could have issues. We also may be near
advisory amounts over the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges where the
precipitation will be all snow, and there could be enough on the
I-80 summit west of Cheyenne for some impact there.

With this low track, it looks like the panhandle will stay warm
enough for all rain, and the rain amounts may be pretty limited in
the southern panhandle. There just doesn't appear to be enough
cold air to lower the snow levels there. If the storm were much
slower it could have brought colder air southward but it's not
looking like that's the case. The northern part of the panhandle
will see a significant cold and windy rain Tuesday night into
Wednesday though.

There's increasing concern about high winds in the west to
northwest flow behind the trough on Wednesday. It's looking like
the gradient will be strong enough for high winds across the
Laramie Range, probably the Elk Mountain/Arlington area on I-80
and possibly eastward to I-25. Where there is some snow
accumulation this could cause issues with ground blizzards. This
would be most likely in the Laramie-Rawlins stretch, but could
also impact the Summit west of Cheyenne.

It will remain cool Thursday and Friday as there's a secondary
weak shortwave/front for Thursday that will keep temperatures from
warming. There could be a more substantial hard freeze across most
of the area Friday morning if the cooler solutions pan out along
with the winds decreasing enough. Much of the lower elevations
could have lows in the 20s. There should be some warming and
drying for the weekend as we go to more westerly flow and probably
some ridging, but it may still be a bit breezy.

The big headline for today is the gusty winds. All terminals are
expected to see gusty winds as a weak front and some shower
activity moves through the region. Terminals in Wyoming could see
gusts from 35 to 40kts with winds out of the southwest, shifting
to northwest as the front passes. Terminals in the Nebraska
Panhandle could see gusts up to 35kts out of the northwest. Winds
should calm down at KRWL and KLAR sometime this evening. Remaining
terminals could see gusty winds into the overnight hours. There is
also a threat for showers this afternoon up until about midnight,
mainly for KRWL, KLAR and KCDR. Guidance hints at some MVFR
conditions for KRWL in the form of low ceilings with some of
those showers. Tomorrow, winds are expected to stay elevated
across the CWA.
