The latest trends in observations & low-level WV satellite imagery
suggest a rapid uptick in mountain wave activity along the central
and southern Laramie Range this evening. Bordeaux has already seen
a brief period of gusts to 70 MPH w/ a peak gust to 48 kts at KCYS
in the last hour. GFS soundings for Cheyenne show a fairly shallow
layer of 6-8 deg C/km lapse rates beneath a distinct inversion at/
near mountain top. While the overall flow aloft does not appear to
be nearly the intensity of last night, the models suggest that 50+
knots may remain present around 2k feet AGL through around 5 AM MT
Wednesday. Any waves that break will have the potential to produce
gusts 60-65 MPH over the I-25 corridor including both Cheyenne and
Wheatland over the next several hours. Stronger gust potential may
decrease over these areas by sunrise, but Bordeaux should continue
to see elevated speeds through Wednesday afternoon with ARL to BRX
pressure gradients ranging from 5-7 millibars. Inherited High Wind
Warnings have been expanded based on this reasoning.

Tonight...Our current high wind warnings have been verifying quite
nicely so far. Based on the projected Craig to Casper 850/700 mb
height gradients and winds in the lower levels, it looks like the
High Wind Warning for Central Laramie County including Cheyenne
should end around 5 PM as scheduled. Gradients suggest the warning
level winds should continue overnight for Arlington, as well as the
southern Laramie Range and foothills. Relatively mild due to the
decent mixing.
Wednesday...The flow aloft transitions from northwest to due west.
Gradients suggest strong winds likely continuing across the I-80
Summit and nearby foothills through the afternoon. With 700 mb
temperatures near 0 Celsius, it will still be relatively mild with
maximum temperatures in the 40s west, and 50s to mid 60s east.
Wednesday night...As the low and mid level gradients strengthen
again, we may need additional High Wind Warnings, especially for the
wind prone locations.
Thursday...A decent bulk of low and mid level moisture moves across
western and southern Wyoming, which should produce copious amounts
of orographic snows for our Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges in the
afternoon. Continued windy and mild at lower elevations based on
projected gradients, though slightly cooler with more mid and high
level clouds.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

All Long Range models and ensemble indicate a gradual pattern
shift across the northern and western US as arctic air begins to
translate southward towards the Canada/US border late this week.
Arctic air has mainly been confined to the far northern areas of
Canada recently, but a potent long wave trough is expected to dig
southward into the Pacific NW coastline and remain in place for
the foreseeable future. The long wave trough will likely extend
far to the east near the Canada/United States border towards the
Great Lakes Region.
Any transition in the overall weather across southeast Wyoming and
western Nebraska will likely be slow due to southwest flow aloft
remaining over the area for a bulk of the time. High winds will
likely continue to be the primary concern Thursday and possibly
into Friday before winds are expected to ease next weekend. Wind
Prone areas and some of the adjacent plains/high valleys will
likely need High Wind headlines for most of Thursday and Thursday
night. Otherwise, ensemble forecasts show temperatures gradually
becoming colder this weekend and through early next week as a
series of cold fronts push across the Front Range. Min/Max
temperatures should be near normal beginning on Friday and
continuing into early next week with highs in the 30s/40s (20s
further west near Rawlins) and lows in the teens. Some GEFS
ensemble guidance are showing much colder low temperatures near
zero across the eastern plains, which may be hinting to the nearby
arctic airmass across the plains Sunday and Monday.
As for snowfall and precipitation, all models show the position of
the jet stream right over the Wyoming/Colorado border on Friday
and continuing through the weekend with a peak jet streak of 180
knots. This pattern favors accumulating precip further north and
in the mountains. The Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges should do very
well with snowfall in this pattern as a prolonged snow event is
forecast to begin late Thursday night or early Friday morning and
likely continue through next week. Some brief lulls in the heavy
snow expected at times in the mountains, but this pattern
typically produces feet of snow over a period of several days.
Models do show the jet stream either splitting at times or the
position fluctuating which each cold front. Therefore, some
snowfall is possible for the lower elevations between Thursday
night and Sunday, but pinning down the exact timing will be very
challenging. The best chance appears to be late Christmas eve as
the jet stream temporarily sags southward into Colorado. However,
confidence is not very high due to persistent downslope winds out
of the west. Kept POP above 50 percent in and near the mountains
with solid snowfall accumulations for the northern Laramie Range
and the northern Snowy Range Foothills too.

Wyoming late Wednesday morning. LLWS in place this evening will
gradually weaken overnight and will be less of a concern on
Wednesday with winds mixing to the surface.

The Red Flag Warning is verifying well across western portions of
the southern Nebraska Panhandle. Wednesday afternoon looks like
another carbon copy of today with respect to winds and humidities,
thus we have issued another Red Flag Warning for the southern
Nebraska Panhandle in coordination with our neighboring offices.
Humidities should be a bit higher Thursday into the weekend, which
should ease concerns somewhat.
