.SYNOPSIS...
A gradual turn from mainly fast zonal flow aloft to a ridge
east and trough west of the area will bring many weather systems
through the state over the next week or more. Temperatures are
forecast to remain below average into the second half of
February.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
Spotty, light mixed precip across the region right now and
expect it to continue for pretty much all of the near term. The
moisture and uplift and upslope flow will maximize in the first
half of the night, making this the most-likely time for any
minor accumulations of snow/sleet and any glaze of ice to
occur. Nightfall will make the possibility of DZ freezing on
roads more possible. Will continue to consider an advy for a
light accum of freezing rain, and may issue one shortly if
confidence increases only the slightest bit. Would likely not
split hairs on where, and just carpet bomb, perhaps starting
the wrn mtns first then expanding to the rest of the area. It
would likely only last thru sunrise or shortly after as llvl
flow become drier from the W/NW in the morning. Temps go almost
nowhere overnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
The wind from the west should dry things out, but little
sunshine is expected with a deep inversion and moisture trapped
under it. Some sun could peek thru in the west later in the day.
Will keep mentions of precip to the early morning, and mainly in
the east and upslope of the Laurels.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
An active weather pattern will continue into the long-term, as
Pennsylvania remains in the vicinity of baroclinic zone between
an anomalous upper-level trough over the Plains states and a
ridge off of the East Coast.

The likelihood is increasing for an impactful winter storm
Monday into Tuesday. This storm will come in two waves: the
first Sunday overnight into Monday morning, associated
with jet streak over the St Lawrence Valley and associated fgen
forcing over PA. This will be followed by a lull in precip
Monday afternoon, then the heaviest precip arrives Monday night
to Tuesday with a wave of low pressure lifting out of the Gulf
of Mexico. This moisture-laden system will ride northward along
the spine of the Appalachians before transferring energy to the
Mid- Atlantic Coast on Tues. Models are coming to a consensus on
general gist of this system, with significant snowfall
accumulations (>6" possible) primarily north of I-80 and a
wintry mix over to rain in SE PA. There is the chance for a
brief period of freezing rain in the far SE zones Tuesday
morning, but amounts seem to not be too significant at this
time. Models have been trending warmer, so this is an area to
watch. Expect a tight gradient between the heavier snow amounts
and areas with no snow, but some uncertainty exists in where
this gradient will set-up. This could mean the difference
between little to nothing or several inches of snow for areas
between the I-80 and I-81 corridors, so we will keep an eye on
model updates and the pattern in the gradient. Headlines should
be coming out for the Northern Tier of PA, and as confidence
increases those headlines may be extended southward.

This system will exit the area later Tues afternoon, followed
by a brief period of fair and seasonable weather for Wednesday
as upper level ridging builds into the region. By late week,
medium range guidance is indicating another significant area of
low pressure will track northward from the Gulf Coast towards
PA..This system Thursday/Friday compared to the Monday/Tuesday
system seems to be wetter but warmer based on the latest
guidance, making it a wintry mix/rain scenario for the entire
CWA. There is good potential for some kind of impactful precip,
but it is still too early to make a final determination on the
type of precip right now.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Cigs lowering all over under llvl E/SE flow which will become
more southerly into the evening. Clouds are heavy with precip,
so they may spit something out (snizzle?) at just about any
time. P-type very uncertain with no seeding with ice crystals
expected over most of the area. All terminals should be
decreasing into IFC this evening, with improvement not expected
until morning for most. Some may get into LIFR. The very light,
patchy mixed precip out there now will become likely for all of
the area tonight. Very little if any improvement is expected
thru the night as wind goes light and weak upslope flow will
continue. Little accums of snow/sleet/ice are expected, though.
De-icing will be likely/necessary due to the deep layer of
super-cooled clouds which will be encountered on arrival and
departure. Despite the gradual veering from E-S-W thru the
lowest 6-8kft, the worst shear in wind dir or speed would be
aloft and not near the sfc.

Some improvement to mainly MVFR cigs and nil precip should occur
in the morning on Sunday. Inversion remains in place, though and
clouds may only lift slightly. A couple of breaks may occur in
the OVC before 18Z, but not likely. Some drying is expected in
the aftn, with the wrn terminals with the greatest poss of
seeing some sun. Clouds increase again from the SW Sun night,
lowering and thickening. Precip (SN) will spread in on Monday as
a decent wave aloft lifts in from the TN/OH valleys. Sig accums
are possible for all but MDT/LNS.

Outlook...

Mon-Tue AM...LIFR in snow/mixed precip, esp NW.

Tues PM-Wed...IFR mainly NW, then improving to VFR/MVFR
briefly.

Thu...Restrictions likely. Wintry mix, may change to rain SE.

...PATCHES OF ICE POSSIBLE ON UNTREATED BRIDGES AND ROADS...

Very light precipitation and fog could be making untreated roads
across the Laurel Highlands slippery. The daylight and mild
ground temperatures will help to keep many roads just wet.

However, bridges are most likely to have ice on them since the
air surrounding the entire bridge deck is well below freezing
today.

Please use extra care today when driving across the region. Assume
that any roadway or bridge which appears wet may indeed be icy.
