.SYNOPSIS...
Widespread showers are expected today with isolated thunderstorms
possible this afternoon. Showers gradually fade tonight with
noticeably cooler and very windy conditions developing on
Friday. Expect a chilly start to May before conditions improve
and temperatures trend warmer into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Showers covering nearly all of central PA late morning as sfc
wave deepens and slides along the front draped across
NW/Ncentral PA. Categorical POPs continue to be supported
throughout most of central PA. However, the steadiest rain
should fall across the extreme northwest part of the forecast
area, where fgen forcing is strongest at nose of low level jet.
Elsewhere, the rain should be showery in nature. Latest HREF and
WPC/NBM blend supports total rainfall of around 1 inch across
the northern tier.

Earlier SLGT outlook downgraded to MRGL given marginal
instability <200 J/kg, despite strong post frontal bulk shear.
A few strong gusts may occur this aftn/eve, but should remain
below severe limits given lack of instability.

A cold front will traverse the area tonight with showers fading
into early Friday morning downwind of the Alleghenies in the
cooler and increasingly gusty postfrontal NW flow. 24hrMinTChange
will be a -10F to -20F degrees with lows ranging from low/mid
40s in the western and northern Alleghenies to mid 50s in the
LSV.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Latest model guidance shows intensifying low pressure into New
England on Friday. A tightening p-gradient and reinforcing
surge of low level CAA will translate into a period of strong
gusty NW winds to close out the month. Forecast soundings show
very deep BL mixing which will tap into 40-50+kt winds aloft.
We remain keen to trend wind gusts higher than blended model
guidance with peak gusts currently in the 50-55 mph range. With
the potential for higher gusts up to 60 mph, we issued a high
wind watch for parts of south central PA in collaboration with
WFOs LWX and PHI. We are very bullish on advisory level gusts
across most of CPA.

Friday is the last day of April 2021 and it will be noticeably
colder with a passing shower in spots. The MaxT24hrChange will
be a setback of 10 to 20 degrees [trending] colder with highs a
-5 to -15 degrees below average from the mid 40s NW to low 60s
 SE.

A rather chilly Friday night with lows Saturday morning in the
low 30s/40s to kick off the 5th month of the year. As 7
additional zones start the growing season May 1, we're closely
monitoring freeze potential Saturday morning in Warren County &
in the Laurel Highlands. Confidence in freezing temperatures in
Warren County continues to increase, while we'll closely monitor
trends in Somerset, Cambria, Clearfield, and possibly Northern
Centre County.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High confidence in cool and dry conditions Saturday, as upper
trough lifts out and surface high builds into PA. Any lingering
gustiness in the morning will taper off by afternoon. Dry air
at low levels will likely translate to afternoon minRH values
below 30%, although a subsidence inversion should prevent the
mixing down of even drier air above the BL. All medium range
guidance develops an upper ridge off of the east coast Sunday
into early next week, with a quasi- stationary front draped
across the Grt Lks into northern New England. A deep southwest
flow should result in a return to above normal temperatures
during this period, along with an increasing chance of showers,
especially closer to the front over northwest PA.

ECENS and GEFS plumes continue to indicate the best chance of
showers will come in two bouts during the first half of next
week. The first is likely Monday PM in association with a
southern stream shortwave lifting out of the Miss Valley. The
progged surface low track through the eastern Grt Lks favors
northwest Pa for the most significant rain from this system. The
second bout is likely to come mid week associated with next
wave of low pressure riding along quasi- stationary front. A bit
more uncertainty remains with this one as the ECENS deepens the
surface low more significantly, resulting in a slower/southern
track compared to the GEFS. Regardless of which track wins out,
a cooler & unsettled weekend appears likely for the second
weekend in May.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Widespread rain showers are ongoing across most of the area at
the lunch hour, with a mixed bag of restrictions ranging from
LIFR/IFR at BFD, JST, and IPT, MVFR at UNV, and VFR at AOO,
MDT, and LNS. Expect rain showers and mostly steady-state cigs
to continue into the late afternoon hours.

A narrow cold frontal rain band will move from northwest to
southeast this evening, and may result in briefly reduced
visibilities and gusty winds as the line moves through. Recent
guidance is less impressive with this line, indicate it may fall
apart as it traverses Central Pennsylvania. In its wake, expect
winds to rapidly shift to come out of the west, northwest with
gusts of 20-30kts continuing through the overnight hours.
IFR/LIFR cigs will persist in the northwest mountains at JST and
BFD, with MVFR or VFR prevailing farther east/south.
