wintry accumulations of both ice and snow are expected before this
activity tapers off late afternoon. In addition, wind chills are 
expected to range between 20 to 25 degrees, starting across the 
Coastal Plains and eastern Brush Country early this morning, and 
then across the western Brush Country Thursday around sunrise.

.AVIATION...

MVFR/IFR CIGS across ALI-CRP-VCT should continue to spread farther
west through the night to reach COT-LRD. Low CIGs around 700-1000
ft will continue through the night and early THU morning lifting
to near 1500-2000 ft for the afternoon. General N-NE wind around
10 KTs through the night will increase to 15-20 KTs toward and
after 18Z. Weather profile toward COT has become favorable for
wintry precipitation toward and after 12Z with freezing rain
transitioning to snow around and after 18Z, so have added weather
into the TAFs. Drizzle/light rain will be possible toward VCT THU
afternoon as well.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 402 PM CST Wed Feb 17 2021/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Thursday Night)...

One last bout of wintry precipitation awaits a portion of our
forecast area beginning late tonight and continuing on/off through
much of the day Thursday. All this is thanks to a shallow dome of
Arctic air still occupying a good chunk of South Texas ahead of
another upper trough still poised well to our west. As an upper
jet rotates through the base of this trough tonight, the trough
will mobilize eastward and begin enhancing ascent across the
Edwards Plateau. Although the low levels will be largely devoid of
any boundaries, aloft this is not the case as a layer of elevated
Fn ascent is progged to unfold around 700mb along with respectable
isentropic upglide. Initially, we expect very light wintry precip
to develop north of our CWA overnight before expanding south
across northern La Salle and McMullen Counties. As the base of
the trough shifts near the Big Bend Thursday morning, forcing will
amplify and model soundings show the warm nose aloft decaying
enough for mostly light snow, although some rain may mix in at
times which could curtail accumulations. Until this point, a light
glaze is expected as surface temps fall just below freezing, but
the more significant zone of icing and snow is still expected to
focus north of the region.

Although earlier models advertised some icing as far east as the
Victoria Crossroads by Thursday morning, recent runs have scaled
back considerably on this threat. As some snow and/or rain
continues near the base of the trough in our NW counties tomorrow,
cold air advection will continue spreading south on brisk
northerly winds. MET, MAV and NBM all appear too optimistic with
highs tomorrow given the CAA, so have undercut guidance with the
greatest margins across the northern Brush Country where precip
should be focused. Any lingering rain/snow late Thursday afternoon
is expected to taper completely Thursday night as forcing wanes,
however lows should be quite chilly with breezy winds likely
resulting in a Wind Chill Warning.

LONG TERM (Friday through Wednesday)...

The long term will begin with a surface high pressure settling in
across Texas as the upper level trough continues to move eastward.
Onshore flow is expected to return by Friday night, gradually
increasing moisture across the area. A weak cold front associated
with a 500 mb trough is expected sometime late this weekend, as
global models are disagreeing with the timing sometime between a
Sunday morning and Sunday night frontal passage. Models are showing
a little more moisture available with the frontal passage, in
particular across the Coastal Bend and open waters, therefore,
increased PoPs to include a slight chance of showers Sunday night.

High temperatures will gradually warm up into the lower to mid 70s
by Sunday before the arrival of the next front. Temperatures will
cool back into the 60s Monday before continuing the warming trend
into the upper 70s and lower 80s by Wednesday. Our last cold night
of this event will occur Friday night with widespread temperatures
in the 30s. Low temperatures Sunday through Tuesday will remain cool
across the area in the mid to upper 40s before warming into the 50s
by mid-week next week. With the final arctic push late this week and
into the weekend, freeze warnings/advisories may be needed Friday
morning and Friday night into Saturday morning along with possible
wind chill advisory Friday morning.

MARINE...

Strong northerly flow tonight will continue through Thursday
afternoon before tapering to moderate levels late Thursday night.
A Small Craft Advisory is in effect through Thursday afternoon,
and may be extended through Thursday evening. Other than some
drizzle possible tonight through Thursday morning, dry conditions
are expected. Moderate to strong northerly winds Friday morning
will become moderate in the afternoon before becoming weak
onshore Friday night. Winds will increase again to moderate
levels Saturday evening into Sunday becoming weak to moderate
by Sunday night ahead of an approaching front. Therefore, a Small
Craft Advisory might be needed through Friday morning. There will
be a slight chance of showers across the open waters as a cold
front sweeps across South Texas Sunday night. A weak to moderate
northerly flow is expected behind the front Sunday night through
Monday night before onshore flow returns Tuesday.
