Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED

.AVIATION...

Cold front has pushed through the forecast area and IFR/LIFR
ceilings are prevalent across the region. IFR/LIFR ceilings will
remain prevalent behind the cold front through the night into
Thursday evening. Areas of fog/IFR vsbys will affect the coastal
plains tonight but gradually improve to MVFR as north winds
increase Thursday morning. Scattered elevated showers will be
possible during the night, but the better chances for rain will
develop after 12Z over the Brush Country and spread eastward
across the coastal plains through the afternoon. Ceilings expected
to range from 400-800 feet (LIFR/IFR) through Thursday night with
MVFR vsbys with the showers. Could see isolated thunderstorms in
this activity Thursday that will provide IFR vsbys. Scattered
showers will continue Thursday evening with activity waning
over the western Brush Country.

DISCUSSION...

The cold front is through all of south Texas with the exception of
the Baffin Bay area this evening. Temperatures continue to fall
behind the front at a faster pace than the current forecast. Went
with a blend of SREF/CONSShort/NBM for temperatures tonight into
Thursday. This brought the lows down about a category from the
previous forecast but not as low as the NAM.

Adjusted PoPs down a little bit for the rest of this evening.
But isentropic lift will steadily increase overnight behind the
front especially over the western Brush Country with the approach
of short wave trough. With high pressure slowly pushing south
through the area Thursday along with scattered to numerous
showers, do not expect temperatures will warm up much. Lowered
the highs for Thursday down around 5 degrees.

MARINE...

Cold front continues to advance into the Gulf waters. Expect areas
of fog will persist over the bays and near shore waters through
the evening hours. As cold front pushes into the offshore waters
and winds increase to SCEC levels, expect visibility will
gradually improve overnight. SCA conditions will likely develop
over the Gulf waters by 14Z Thursday.

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Thursday Night)...

A cold front is situated across the middle of the forecast area
with a wide range of temperatures. Daytime temps in Victoria have
been in the 50s all day while Kingsville hit 84 this afternoon!
Quite impressive for a front that has just been crawling southward
all day.

This front will continue southward tonight with the cooler air
filtering in behind it. Fog potential looks greatest for the
southern coastline and bays through early in the night before the
front gets through. Isentropic lift will persist and will keep the
scattered light rain showers through the night.

By tomorrow, rain chances increase further with likely showers
area wide. A mid-level shortwave and increased instability should
allow for a few thunderstorms. Highs tomorrow should top out in
the 50s for most of the area, but could remain in the upper 40s
northeast. Isentropic lift begins to decrease Thursday night with
rain chances decreasing west to east. Low temperatures fall into
the upper 30s north and lower 40s elsewhere.

LONG TERM (Friday through Wednesday)...

With the cold front well offshore, rain chances will taper off
Friday morning leaving the rest of the day dry. The mid-upper trough
will continue its eastward movement, allowing cold air to continue
to surge into the region. Expect highs on Friday to be in the upper
40s to low 50s.

Another mid-upper level trough will shift over the area from the
Four Corners region on Saturday as it rotates around an upper low
situated over Central Canada. This will create a gateway for another
surge of Arctic air into the region. Showers will be possible with
this trough, but with PWAT values just below 1.0 inch, have put
slight PoPs in the grids. Highs on Saturday will be in the 40s
across the area. Lows will drop into the low to mid 30s, with some
areas at or just above freezing. With these temperatures, there is a
chance of patchy freezing rain early Sunday for the northern tier of
the CWA.

Sunday's forecast continues to create some uncertainty, though
confidence is improving in some areas. A coastal trough will
introduce moisture into the area in time for the main event Sunday.
A strong upper level jet will move into the region Sunday afternoon
into Monday, bringing yet another surge of Arctic air with it. This
combination of jet dynamics and moisture could allow for some wintry
precipitation to occur, with the best chance for precipitation
occurring overnight Sunday into Monday. Have continued to lean more
towards the GFS due to its consistency with this colder air. At this
point GFS soundings indicate that the precipitation type will be
primarily freezing rain with sleet mixed in. While the depth of the
cold air layer is borderline in regards to being able to support the
development of sleet, a brief transition to sleet cannot be ruled
out overnight Sunday.

Temperatures on Sunday will be in the 40s inland and upper 40s to
low 50s along the coast. Sunday night lows will drop below freezing
for inland areas. The immediate coast will see lows just above
freezing.

As the upper level trough shifts east during the day Monday, yet
another surge of Arctic air will enter the area. High...yes,
highs..on Monday are expected to be in the 30s across the area, with
the Victoria Crossroads area struggling to get above freezing. We
could see record low temperatures Monday night as temperatures
plummet into the teens for the Victoria Crossroads area into the
northern Coastal Plains and northern Brush Country. The rest of the
area will be in the low to mid 20s.

Temperatures will show some recovery on Tuesday with highs back in
the 40s to mid 50s. Wednesday will be slightly warmer with highs in
the 50s to low 60s.

Models continue to be in disagreement on the timing. At this point
the best chances for wintry precipitation appear to be Sunday night
into Monday. The Canadian model brings in colder temperatures than
the GFS, and the timing is approximately 6 hours earlier as of the
last model run. At this point confidence on timing is moderate.

Conversely, the ECMWF continues to trend warmer than the GFS and
Canadian models, making the precip type primarily rain. While this
model cannot be ruled out, confidence that wintry precipitation
will occur during the aforementioned time period is improving.

Of course, the potential for wintry precipitation and freezing
temperatures presents its own set of hazards. Wind Chills Sunday
night into Tuesday night will generally be in the teens to low 20,
so a wind Chill Advisory will likely be needed for inland areas.
Freezing temperatures will be possible nightly Saturday night
through Tuesday night, which will necessitate a Freeze Warning.
These advisories would be issued closer to the event, if needed.

While this event is still days away, confidence in the chance of
seeing wintry precipitation Sunday into Monday is improving. Now is
the time to start preparing your home for the possibility of winter
weather. We are continuing to monitor updates in the models, so stay
tuned for updates in the forecast!

MARINE...

Patchy fog will be possible once again tonight, mainly Port Aransas
and South. Wind have shifted along the northern coast and will
continue to shift as a front pushes the rest of the way through the
area. Northerly winds become moderate to strong by Thurday afternoon
and night, continuing into Friday. Small Craft Advisory conditions
are likely to begin Thursday night and may continue through Saturday
morning. Winds will briefly become moderate Saturday afternoon.
Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected to return Saturday
night as northerly winds become moderate to strong and continue
through Monday. Showers will be possible today through Friday
morning and again over the weekend.

Patchy to areas of fog have develop across portions of South
Texas early this morning. Expect visibilities generally 1 to 3
miles, with a few locations seeing visibilities 1/4 mile or less
at times.

Use caution if traveling as visibility may change rapidly
in a short amount of time. Use low beam headlights and leave
extra distance between your vehicle and others on the road.
