.DISCUSSION...

Updated forecast to add light freezing rain farther east
overnight (Condensation pressure deficit output/isentropic lift
per NWP model deterministic output), yet no signficant
accumulation expected. Extended the Freezing Warning to include
Bee, Goliad, and Victoria owing recent temperature trends.
Canceled the SCA that was to expire at 06z based on recent
observations. The RAP has the best handle on the recent wind and
predicts SCEC conditions at worst over the coastal waters.

.AVIATION...

Continue to expect prevailing MVFR/IFR ceilings during the TAF
period. Patchy light rain/freezing rain anticipated over the
Coastal Bend/Victoria Crossroads mainly during the 06-14z Sunday
period. Expect wintry precipitation to increase significantly
toward the end of the TAF period. Weak to moderate
north/northeast flow during the period, increase to breezy toward
the end of the TAF period owing to the new surge of arctic air.

PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 505 PM CST Sat Feb 13 2021/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Monday)...

For the third day in a row must of the area has had high
temperature in the 30 today. This doesn't leave much room for
temperatures to fall before freezing tonight. A freeze warning is
in effect for western counties where temps are most likely to
drop. A few locations east could as well. The tricky part about
this is that there is a chance for showers overnight, mainly
east...though we do have slight chance PoPs continuing west. Will
hold off on issuing a winter weather advisory until and if we see
showers developing where temps are freezing. It's another
borderline situation similar to last night. Just be aware that
elevated surfaces could become slick if these conditions (temp and
precip) line up. Low temperatures in the east will be closer to
the mid 30s...not moving much from current values.

Sunday rain chances really increase as isentropic lift develops
over the region and the deep upper trough approaches. Temperatures
should warm into the middle and upper 30s during the daytime hours
resulting in a cold rain...but keeping the freezing rain situation
held off until later in the day/night.

Sunday night and Monday the winter weather we have talking about
for days will finally arrive. A strong push of arctic air comes
through beginning around 6pm in the north dropping temperatures
from near freezing to well below freezing very quickly. With some
very shallow dry air in place, wet bulb effect can help to drop
the temps even more rapidly as rain evaporates into this dry
layer. At the onset, expect rain changing over to freezing rain
from north to south, reaching the Corpus Christi/Alice/Laredo
areas by as early as 8pm. Ice will quickly begin to accumulate on
elevated surfaces, and then on surface streets and sidewalks as
the surface cools. While the warm layer above the surface is
shallow, initially there appears to be no ice (snow) initiation
into the cold layer is expected early on. As the entire profile
becomes colder during the night, the surface layer should get
deep enough to bring sleet potential into the picture for much of
the area. In northern areas, some snow is also possible with only
minor accumulations.

All said and done, expect freezing rain accumulations up to 1/10
of an inch for most of the area, but near the Victoria Crossroads,
totals could be between 1/10 and 2/10. Snow and sleet
accumulations should remain under an inch...unless the changeover
were to occur sooner. Precip ending time has moved up a bit and
expect most of the area to be dry by mid-day. Temperatures will
likely stay below freezing though for most of the area. If we can
get some clearing west we could warm up a few degrees.

LONG TERM (Monday Night through Saturday)...

The big story for the start of the long term is the winter
precipitation and cold temperatures. The frozen precipitation
associated with Sunday night's event will taper off Monday
afternoon. Continue to exercise extreme caution to protect life and
property! The hazards associated with this storm will not end just
because the precipitation has ceased. Roads will still be icy, and
wind chills dangerously low with values in the low single digits.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the
day. Monday night lows will dip to a bone chilling 10-20 degrees and
which is likely set new record lows for many areas across South
Texas. A slight warm up will then follow but temperatures will still
get to or below freezing each night going into the weekend.

Taking a step back, a brief break in the weather Tuesday will
precede a coastal trough Tuesday night which will increase moisture
and rain chances. This will in turn increase the threat of freezing
rain Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and again Wednesday night
into Thursday owing to a mid-level trough digging down over South
Texas from a developing low near the TX Panhandle. Winds with this
system could strengthen to strong levels and wind chill values
once again dipping into the teens. It should be noted that
confidence is low in the forecast after Tuesday as it is towards
the end of the period and models are struggling with consensus in
regards to timing and progression. However, have put into forecast
as the previous system has progressed colder and faster than the
outset of the model runs. Recognizing that each storm is different
and this next one will likely not be as cold, will continue to
update with more details in the coming days.

MARINE...

Strong northerly winds will persist this evening before subsiding
tonight into Sunday. Winds will increase once again Sunday and
Monday with near gale conditions possible. A Gale Watch is in
effect for late Sunday night into Monday. Showers will be
possible over the weekend, with the chance of some wintry
precipitation mixed in nearshore and bays Monday. Some icing on
surfaces both due to the precipitation falling and spray from
strong winds could be possibly, mainly in bays where water
temperatures will be quite cold. Winds will gradually subside
Monday afternoon and night. Rain chances should taper off by
Tuesday but return Tuesday night through Wednesday night due to
another mid level disturbance.
