Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 1251 AM EST Sat Jan 30 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will be across the region tonight and Saturday. Then all eyes turn to the Oklahoma panhandle where low pressure will develop and move to the Ohio Valley for Sunday. The low will transition off of the east coast Monday, but a trough will linger across the eastern Great Lakes. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Update... The near-term forecast remains valid. No updates appeared necessary early this morning. Previous Discussion... Flurries across northeast Ohio have just about ended and significant breaks in the overcast have begun to develop. Further east enough moisture is still around with a flow off of the lake to continue to squeeze out more light snow showers tonight. As far as temperatures are concerned for tonight have colder temperatures than the past few nights. With clear skies and near calm winds, will allow for better radiational cooling. Saturday will be a transition day as the high shifts east and surface flow comes around to the southeast. Any early breaks in the cloud cover will be met with the slow and steady increase and thickening of mid and high clouds with the approach of low pressure originating across the Oklahoma panhandle and reaching Missouri by the end of the day Saturday. Even with a cool start, temperatures will rebound as the beginning of warm advection begins to take place. Will stick highs in the lower 30s across OH and upper 20s in NW PA. Any lingering flurries in NW PA will wrap up in the morning. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... All attention for the forecast this afternoon is for the incoming low pressure system that will move through the Ohio Valley on Saturday night through Monday. Overall, not much has changed for the short term forecast period in regard to snowfall timing and snow total forecasts. At this time, have continued letting the forecast speak for itself with a long period of snow across the region with totals of 3 to 8 inches over 60 hours spanning Saturday night through Monday night. The highest snowfall amounts still remain in Northwest and North Central Ohio, largely Toledo to Wooster and southwest. Winter Weather Advisories could be issued overnight, as we get closer to this event, to highlight a period of better snow in this region early Sunday morning. An upper trough over the central CONUS will support developing low pressure over the lower Missouri Valley on Saturday evening. A warm front will extend through the Ohio Valley ahead of the front and linger just south of the forecast area. The low will track east along the front Saturday night through Sunday night. The forecast area remains largely on the cold side of the system and initial precipitation type will be snow on Saturday night and Sunday with temperatures below freezing through the entire atmosphere. A good push over snow is expected to push across the forecast area overnight Saturday into Sunday with a small vorticity max that will move through the approaching upper trough. While lift and moisture are present with this system, the tricky part of the event is the snow-to-liquid ratio. While temperatures are below freezing, low level temperatures aren't that cold and we don't get the better moisture and lift to align to have high SLRs. With that, snow will not be as efficient to build up snow accumulations, rather snow will be heavier, wetter, and less efficient and in turn, have less accumulation with the amount of QPF in the forecast. As the low pressure system continues across the region on Sunday, a wedge of warmer air does try to push north to allow for some wintry mix or even rain on the fringe southeastern portions of the forecast area. This will allow eat at snowfall totals depending on how far north this warmer air gets, but generally speaking, most folks will stay as snow. The low pressure system weakens across the area on Sunday and the better jet energy passes along to the East Coast system. A residual trough will remain in place and snow showers will persist through Monday. Again, we aren't all that cold to have robust snow showers so have generic 1 to 2 inches of snow for the end of the period. Temperatures through the period will be near seasonal averages. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Snow should taper through the day on Tuesday as the residual surface trough weakens across the area. There could be some focus for snow in the typical lake effect snow regions as colder air enters, but drier air also enters quickly so it would be shallow, low intensity snow. The 850 mb ridge and surface high pressure enter for Wednesday and all snow will be done. The next system approaches for Thursday and Friday and we remain on the warm side of the system for Thursday and temperatures could rise into the 40s with rain. A cold front will pass through on Friday and rain will change over to snow as more seasonable conditions return. && .AVIATION /06Z Saturday THROUGH Wednesday/... At the surface, a high pressure ridge gradually exits our region to the north and east as a developing low near the OK Panhandle early this morning moves east-northeastward to near KSTL by 06Z/Sun. Winds trend calm or light and variable through about 15Z/Sat. Thereafter, regional winds should trend east- southeasterly to southeasterly at about 5 to 10 knots. Lake effect stratocumulus clouds and borderline VFR/MVFR ceilings across far-northeast OH and northwest PA should linger through this late afternoon or early evening while contracting slowly in coverage. Lake effect snow flurries may affect KYNG and KERI at times, but visibility will remain in the VFR range. Otherwise VFR ceilings develop and lower gradually over the region, generally from southwest to northeast, as the aforementioned low approaches. Widespread light snow and associated MVFR ceilings/visibility should begin overspreading the region after 04Z/Sun. The snow and lower ceilings should make it nearly as far northeast as a KTOL to KMFD line by 06Z/Sun. Outlook...Periods of non-VFR with widespread snow are probable Sunday night through Tuesday. && .MARINE... High pressure entering the region is allowing for winds to relax across Lake Erie. Stronger northwest flow remains over the eastern half of the lake and have Small Craft Advisories through this evening. High pressure becomes centered across the lake tonight into Saturday and flow will be lighter and more variable. As high pressure shifts east on Saturday, southeast then easterly flow will be favored. Low pressure will approach on Sunday and pass south of the lake, increasing easterly flow and another round of marine headlines are expected. With the unfavorable easterly flow, there could be increases in water levels over the western basin and lakeshore flooding could be an issue as well. The low passes southeast of the area on Monday as it merges with a coastal system and winds will become more northeast on Monday and then north by Tuesday as a residual trough lingers over the eastern Great Lakes region and suspect marine headlines will continue into early next week.
