Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
116 PM EST Sun Dec 5 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low pressure system will move across the Great Lakes
tonight, pulling a strong cold front through the region on Monday.
and associated cold front Sunday into Monday. High pressure should
quickly build behind this cold front on Tuesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
After a period of partial sun this morning, clouds will continue
to fill back in from the south and west this afternoon. Going
forecast remains on track with showers starting to move into NW
Ohio towards 4 PM, then with light showers starting to expand
eastward after 00Z. Breezy winds still expected for a period
tonight with gusts to around 40 mph, with localized amounts up
to 45 mph, except in Erie County Pennsylvania where the High
Wind Warning remains in effect.
Previous discussion...
A strong strong system and associated cold front is expected to
move through the area tonight into Monday with wind hazards
being the primary threat. Although the forecast is for mostly
cloudy sky conditions, some peaks of sun are possible
Southeast to southerly winds in a warm air advection regime will
increase through today, with temperatures steadily rising into the
mid to upper 40s by this afternoon. Temperatures will continue to
rise following sunset into the evening and overnight hours, peaking
in the mid 50s. Precipitation in the form of rain will begin to
overspread Northwest and Northern Ohio later this evening into the
early overnight hours. Rain may begin to decrease in intensity at
some point overnight, before picking up in intensity once again as
another surge of mid-level moisture arrives by late tonight into
Monday morning, generally across Northeast Ohio into Northwest
Pennsylvania. Storm total rainfall amounts will generally be a half
inch or less.
Perhaps the biggest story will be the threat for potentially
damaging synoptic winds over two different time periods. The first
period will be more localized across Erie County, PA this evening
and overnight as low-level winds around 2,000 feet increase in the
55 to 65 mph range. A favorable south to southeasterly downslope
direction of these winds could result in several instances of 55 to
65 mph wind gusts in Erie County and thus have issued a High Wind
Warning for this evening and overnight. The second period will be
behind the strong cold front which is expected to move east across
the area on Monday. Generally, we are expecting wind gusts to be in
the 35 to 40 mph range across much of the area. However, slightly
higher wind gusts in the 45 to 50 mph range will be possible for
counties along the lakeshore and thus have issued a Wind Advisory
for Monday afternoon and evening.
By late Monday, much colder air aloft will arrive across the region,
ushering in the next chance for lake effect snow showers across the
snowbelt. More details will be found below in the short term section
of the afd.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The strong winds should decrease Monday night with strong cold
advection continuing. The frontal zone precipitation should be
east of the region by sunset with lake effect snow then taking
shape Monday night. 850 mb temperatures fall through the night
and should dip to -14C to -16C overnight. Minimal shear through
the snow growth zone with inversion heights in the 8000-10000
foot range should get us a band or two of snow across NE OH
into NW PA. Winds may end up being strong enough to push the
greater accumulations closer to the PA/NY border and maybe
another band from near Edinboro inland to Corry. Current
thinking is that we see 2 to 3 inches of snow but we will need
to monitor this closely for any uptick in amounts.
A surface trough lingers over the lake Tuesday through maybe
early Wednesday. So we expect to see at least lake effect snow
showers to continue over the primary snowbelt through this time
period. Inversion heights lower on Tuesday and remain that way
into Wednesday. So expect to see at least a couple bands/swaths
where the scattered snow showers persist into Tuesday night.
Tuesday into Tuesday night will definitely be a period of time
where higher amounts could occur where persist snow showers can
occur. By Wednesday an upper level trough approaches and should
keep a main band oriented off the lake into western NY. However
with a low moving northeast from the Tennessee Valley to the
Middle Atlantic Coast we could see some light snow across the
eastern CWA. Not overly confident in this potential during the
day on Wednesday. If it does occur it will be very light.
By Wednesday night the synoptic moisture should move east of
the region with only low chances of some lake enhanced snow
showers across NW PA. So after the snow begins Monday
afternoon/evening there could be snow showers around NW PA
through Wednesday night.
It will be colder through the short term with highs in the
30's. Lows should be in the 20's, maybe a few teens Wednesday
night.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The active/progressive flow continues over the Great Lakes
region through the long term. The next zone of warm advection
spreads over the region Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.
So it looks like we should be dry on Thursday but the increased
warm advection may bring some light rain/snow to the region
Thursday night. The better lift and moisture look to arrive
Friday into Friday night as low pressure moves from the
Southern Plains to central or western Ohio. This should mean
most of the region will remain in the warm sector of the storm.
Models are uncertain on how fast to move this low eastward on
Saturday.
Thursday will be a bit warmer with highs in the mid 30's to near
40. Much warmer on Friday with mid 40's to mid 50's anticipated.
Highs remain warm on Saturday with highs in the 50's
continuing. However these highs may end up being early in the
day.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z Sunday THROUGH Friday/...
VFR conditions in place at all terminals this afternoon as a
cloud deck in the 4-7K range expands northward. Scattered light
showers are expected to approach TOL between 21-23Z then
expanding in coverage and intensity this evening after 00Z.
Showers will begin to spread eastward through this evening and
will also bring ceilings lowering into the MVFR range through
the overnight. A better area of showers will develop from MFD-
CLE as the a cold front arrives towards 09Z and will move
through the eastern terminals through 15Z. A few locations may
briefly drop to IFR with this band of rain.
Breezy winds are expected to develop this evening. At the same
time, a strong 50-60 knot low level jet will move across
northwest and north central Ohio. Did continue with a few hour
window of wind sheer where the strongest winds aloft are
expected before the surface winds peak during the overnight
window as low pressure approaches and the gradient increases.
If surface wind gusts pick up sooner we may be able to remove
the mention of low level wind sheer from the forecast. The other
area of concern with winds is at ERI where southeast wind gusts
are expected to exceed 40 knots and may briefly approach 50
knots.
Outlook...Strong, gusty westerly winds are likely on Monday,
gradually decreasing after 00Z. Non-VFR likely on Monday into
Tuesday in lower ceilings and snow showers. Non-VFR possible
again in more widespread lower ceilings and snow showers
Wednesday into Thursday.
&&
.MARINE...
High pressure over the lake this morning will move quickly to the
east as low pressure moves toward the Upper Great Lakes. This low is
expected to deepen as it moves across southern Ontario Sunday night
into Monday. This will cause increasing southerly winds to develop
this afternoon into the overnight hours. A cold front looks like it
will reach The Islands of western Lake Erie near sunrise then
progress eastward through the morning. Strong cold advection in the
wake of the front will help to bring strong westerly winds to the
surface. We expect to see Gales to spread wet to east across the
lake through the morning and continue into the evening. West gales to
35 knots are likely but could reach 40 knots for a couple few hours
during the afternoon. Gusts could approach 50 knots. Will also need
to issue a low water advisory at some point today with water levels
expect to dip to near zero water datum which would be 18 inches
below the level for safe shipping.
Winds begin to decrease Monday night but small craft advisories will
likely be needed into Tuesday morning. High pressure ridges onto the
lake from the west on Tuesday, eventually moving over OH Tuesday
night. A trough will linger on the lake into Wednesday night as an
area of low pressure moves across the central Appalachians to the
Middle Atlantic Coast.
