.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over the lower Missouri River Valley will move
northeast tonight and reach the Great Lakes region on Wednesday.
This low will extend a warm front across the area by Wednesday
afternoon. Another low pressure system will develop over the
south central United States on Thursday and move northeast into
the Ohio Valley on Thursday night into Friday. High pressure
will briefly return to the region on Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
930 pm update...
No significant changes to the ongoing forecast overnight were
made with this forecast update. We made some minor tweaks to the
precip chances with the very light scattered rain showers
expected late tonight into the early morning hours.

Previous discussion...
Mid-to-high clouds have thickened up across the area this
afternoon as a mid-level vorticity maximum moves through the
region, tapping into moisture around 500 mb. Some breaks in the
clouds will return this evening as this feature departs but the
filtered sunshine feel will continue for the rest of today. With
clouds across the region, believe that lows tonight will stay
elevated around the 50 degree mark, or warmer than the average
high for late March for most folks. Low pressure over the lower
Missouri River Valley will move northeast towards the Great
Lakes region tonight. The combination of warm air and moisture
advection with a shortwave trough pivoting northwest of the area
will allow for lower clouds and scattered showers to enter
overnight. The low levels of the atmosphere are fairly dry and
there is potential that the first bit of rain would just help
resaturate the area and measurable precipitation may not occur
until Wednesday morning. With that, will continue with the
chance PoPs across the forecast area with the highest
percentages in NW Ohio. The surface warm front will cross the
area on Wednesday and have PoPs diminishing through the day but
most precipitation should be over by Noon. Temperatures will
have the opportunity to return near the 70 degree mark for highs
on Wednesday, but could even exceed that since we'll be
starting from the 50s in the morning. The atmosphere should mix
fairly well by the afternoon and winds will be on the increase
with gusts to 35 mph possible. Drier air will enter behind the
departing low on Wednesday night and cloud cover should
diminish. Elevated winds should keep the atmosphere mixed and
lows should remain well above normal in the upper 40s to lower
50s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
We will be monitoring an interesting weather system moving out
of the southern Plains during the short term forecast period.
Low pressure will develop over the lower Mississippi Valley on
Thursday and track northeast towards Lake Erie by Friday
morning. This is in response to a fairly compact shortwave
trough that will also lift out of the southern Plains with a 130
knot upper level jet. Models still lying in two camps with this
system, with the 12Z GFS/ECMWF both showing the shortwave
trough becoming negatively tilted and closing off as it reaches
northern Ohio by Friday morning, with an associated surface low
deepening to at least 990mb. Meanwhile the NAM remains more
progressive with both the upper trough and surface feature
resulting in a weaker system and important forecast differences.
Today's runs show the Canadian somewhere in between and may
offer a compromise of the various solutions. Both scenarios
place the forecast area in the warm sector at some point
Thursday or Thursday night and did include a chance of
thunderstorms with continued high pops of 80-90 percent.
Confidence is fairly high in widespread rain with amounts of
0.50-1.50 inches, primarily focused in the Thursday night window.
The ECMWF remains the more consistent model with the GFS
trending in that direction with the 12Z run although confidence
in storm track/strength/details remaining below normal.

Although instability will be limited, especially if the overnight
timing pans out, can not rule out a few thunderstorms that need to
be monitored for a chance of severe weather given the strong shear
profile. In addition, we could be looking at strong post frontal
winds on Friday along and behind the cold front as the stronger
solutions indicate up to 50 knots at 925mb. Highs on Thursday
will be warm with some areas near 70, although portions of NW
Ohio could end up cooler with flow off the lake. Highs on Friday
will occur early ahead of the front with temperatures falling
to near 50 behind it.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure will be overhead on Saturday before another low
pressure system moves east across Lake Erie Saturday night in
response to a deepening trough moving out of Canada. This system
will present another chance for showers with cold advection
Sunday into Sunday night. Precipitation will largely fall as
rain but can not rule out a few flakes mixing in by Sunday
night. Temperatures on Monday will be closer to normal before
starting to recover again by Tuesday with a building ridge.

.AVIATION /06Z Wednesday THROUGH Sunday/...
Low pressure centered over Missouri will be the primary driver
in impacts to aviation through this period. This low will
continue northeast across the western Great Lakes into Wednesday
overnight, bringing a weak warm front north across the area by
sunrise. Ceilings are also expected to steadily decrease, however
opted to keep all VFR conditions through the period, but cannot
rule out brief periods of MVFR. The aforementioned warm front
will provide increased moisture advection across the area and a
source of lift, which will result is scattered, light rain
showers into the morning hours. These showers are not expected
to be heavy enough to cause significant reduction in visibility.
Aside from the warm front, as the low pressure moves closer to
the area, an associated strong LLJ is expected to establish
itself across the area. A deep mixing layer will allow for
southeast winds of 10 to 15 knots, gusting up to 30 knots at
times throughout the forecast period. Winds will be slightly
higher in NW PA and NE OH due to downsloping, so can expect
sustained winds of 12 to 20 knots, gusting near 30 knots more
consistently at KERI. Winds are expected to weaken to 5 to 10
knots near the end of the TAF period.

Outlook...Non-VFR possible Thursday through Friday with periods
of rain showers and some thunderstorms. Winds will be elevated
on Friday and gusts in excess of 30 knots are expected.

.MARINE...
Southeasterly winds of 10 to 15 knots will veer to southerly at 10-
20 knots on Wednesday as a warm front lifts north across the lake.
Stable boundary layer conditions will help to prevent much stronger
winds aloft from reaching the surface as a strong low level jet
moves overhead. A strong low pressure system will track out of the
southern Plains on Thursday with easterly winds increasing ahead of
the low. There is some uncertainty regarding the track of this
system but generally expecting a fairly strong low to track
northeast across Lake Erie Friday morning, wrapping a cold front in
behind it and creating a window of strong winds. Easterly winds will
veer to southerly and eventually southwest and west through the day
on Friday with a window of gale force winds possible. Will re-
evaluate the potential for gales again over the next 48 hours as
models narrow in on a more consistent storm track. Deviation to the
the track could result in considerably different wind directions and
speeds.

High pressure will quickly build in behind this system on Friday.
Another low pressure system will move east across Lake Erie Saturday
night, wrapping another cold front across the lake for Sunday,
potentially resulting in another window of Small Craft
Advisories.
