.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will prevail through this evening. A cold front
is forecasted to move through the region on Sunday, followed by
brief high pressure on Monday. A coastal storm will bring
impacts to the region late Monday through Wednesday. High
pressure then returns late next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Early Saturday afternoon: Mid-level clouds were thinning from
south to north, and this trend will combine with southerly flow
to support unseasonably warm temperatures approaching 80F away
from the beaches. On the beaches, marine influence will hold
temperatures to the upper 60s/lower 70s, and patches of marine
stratus/fog could occasionally brush the immediate coast this
afternoon. Otherwise, aside from a few sprinkles across far
inland/northern counties early this afternoon, the region should
remain rain- free until after dark.

Tonight: Ahead of an approaching cold front/associated
shortwave trough aloft, transport of PWAT values increasing to
1.5-1.75 inches will translate to an increasing chance of
showers, initially inland then spreading east with time. We
will assess the need to raise PoPs, especially later tonight.
Otherwise, an unseasonably warm/moist environment could again
support some fog, although cloud cover and persistent S/SW winds
could limited this potential somewhat. Higher probabilities for
visibility reduction will exist east of I-95 where sea fog
could develop and spread inland after dark. Otherwise, low
temperatures will only average in the lower/middle 60s, around
20F above normal for Dec 19.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Sunday: Mid-level flow overhead will be from the southwest in the
morning, as a trough approaches from the northwest. The trough and
its vorticity will mainly pass to our north during the evening, then
offshore overnight. A surface cold front will approach from the west
during the day, crossing through our area during the afternoon, then
move offshore in the evening and overnight. High pressure will then
build in from the northwest overnight. Models continue to show a
deep plume of moisture ahead of the front, with PWATs approaching
1.75". These values are 2-3 standard deviations above normal for
this time of year per NAEFS. They're also above the 90% moving
average for CHS sounding climo per SPC. But even with all of this
moisture, the overall QPF amounts are not that impressive, likely
due to the bulk of the lift remaining to our north. Even the models
still differ quite a bit regarding the timing, location, and QPF
amounts. But the general thinking remains showers across our area
during the morning, with clearing from west to east during the
afternoon and into the evening. Daily rainfall should generally be
less than 0.2" for our entire area. There is still some elevated
instability in the afternoon, but it remains a stretch putting
thunder in the forecast, especially for mid-December. Drier are
quickly builds into the area from the northwest during the evening
and overnight. Daytime temperatures ahead of the front will be above
normal. Behind the front, temperatures will rapidly fall. Lows will
possibly be a few degrees below normal due to cold air advection.

Monday: The mid-levels will consist of zonal flow overhead in the
morning. A trough is forecasted to slowly approach from the Lower
Plains in the afternoon, making it to the Lower MS Valley overnight.
At the surface, high pressure will pass to our north during the
afternoon, moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast overnight. Meanwhile, a
coastal storm will be developing in the northern Gulf of Mexico,
with the low making it to the northeast Gulf late at night. The high
will bring our area dry conditions during the day. However, the
combination of northeast winds ushering in colder air and mostly
cloudy skies will yield temperatures well below normal. Highs may
have a hard time getting to the lower 50s across our SC counties and
the mid 50s for our GA counties. As the high moves away during the
evening and overnight, moisture will start overspreading our area in
advance of the coastal storm. The models are in two camps,
widespread rainfall or some light rain. Since the GFS and ECMWF are
wet, we went with them for this forecast. Expect showers to
overspread the area from south to north overnight. The current POPS
are probably too low and QPF may be too low as well. But we had to
try to match out neighboring forecasts.

Tuesday: A mid-level trough will move over the Southeast while a
coastal storm impacts the same area. The center of the low is
expected to move from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in the
morning, perhaps making it to the FL/GA coastline by late afternoon.
Showers are anticipated during the morning and afternoon. Similar to
Monday, our forecasted POPS and QPF are probably too low, owing to
an effort to match our neighboring forecasts. This aspect of the
forecast will need to be reevaluated, especially as the models get a
better grasp of the overall track and intensity of this storm.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A coastal storm will be impacting our area Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning, bringing showers and possibly higher winds. The
impacts, will remain highly dependent on the exact track, intensity,
and speed of the low. The storm is expected to move away late
Wednesday. Drier conditions and warming temperatures return for mid
to late week as high pressure builds back into the area.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Brief MVFR ceilings cannot be ruled out this afternoon, but
overall VFR conditions should prevail until at least late this
evening. Then, low-level moisture could support flight
restrictions in stratus and/or fog overnight, with the greatest
potential for significant ceiling/visibility reduction at KJZI
where sea fog could push onshore. However, confidence in timing/
duration and magnitude of flight restrictions remains low
tonight. Then as showers spread into the region ahead of an
approaching cold front, ceilings should generally lower Sunday,
possibly into IFR territory by 18z.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions are expected with
a cold front on Sunday, followed by gusty winds behind the
front Sunday night into maybe Monday. A coastal storm will bring
more flight restrictions Monday night through Wednesday. Gusty
winds will also be possible during this time period.

.MARINE...
This afternoon: South/southwest winds and dewpoints in the 60s
should support at least patchy fog, especially outside
Charleston Harbor and the Savannah River. The probability for
more widespread, dense fog will increase after dark, and
additional Dense Fog Advisories could be needed tonight.

Otherwise, south-southwest winds 10-15 knots and seas 2-4 feet
will prevail.

Tonight: The oceanic high will gradually relax its grip on the
local waters, as a cold front moves into the Southeast. The
gradient does tighten somewhat between these two features, and
low level wind fields increase. This will cause S and SW winds
to reach up to around 15 kt, with a subtle increase in seas that
are as large as 3 to 5 feet (highest on the outer Georgia
waters).

If sea fog is already prevalent, the higher winds would have
little impact on dispersing the fog. However, if fog is limited
in areal coverage with these winds, the fog would likely not get
too bad. For now we have patchy fog in the forecast, and will
monitor for possible Dense Fog Advisories.

Sunday: A cold front will approach from the west during the day,
causing SW winds. The front will move through the waters during the
afternoon, causing winds to veer. The front will continue to move
offshore in the evening and overnight. Meanwhile, high pressure will
build in from the northwest overnight. Cold air advection and an
enhanced pressure gradient between these two synoptic features will
cause winds and seas to rapidly increase overnight. Small Craft
Advisories will be needed for all of the ocean waters, and possibly
the Charleston Harbor during this time period.

Monday: High pressure will pass to our north. Winds are expected to
ease a bit through the afternoon as the pressure gradient levels
off. Though, seas will remain elevated. Small Craft Advisories will
remain in effect.

Monday night through Wednesday: A coastal storm is expected move
from the northeast Gulf of Mexico Monday night, paralleling our
coast Tuesday night, then moving away to the northeast on Wednesday.
This storm will bring elevated winds and seas. Though, the intensity
will be somewhat dependent on the exact strength and track of the
low. Small Craft Advisories will remain up for most of the waters
during this entire time period.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Elevated northeast winds, coastal low pressure and astronomical
factors could contribute to minor coastal flooding each morning
early to mid-week. If rain occurs around the times of the
Tuesday and Wednesday high tides, the potential for road
flooding will increase.

could also occur around the Tuesday morning high tide.
