.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will shift offshore through tonight. A storm
system will bring multiple impacts to the region Saturday into
Saturday night. High pressure will prevail for most of next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1PM Update: Minor changes made to the afternoon update. Mainly
increased wind gusts along the coastal areas to account for the
sea breeze. Otherwise, the forecast remains on track through at
least the rest of today.

Today: A zonal flow will remain in place across the Southeast
U.S. for one more day as surface high pressure moves slowly
offshore. A pronounced 850-700 hPa ridge axis will gradually
propagate the east over the region. This coupled with the
continued presence of dry air aloft will keep rain-free
conditions in place yet another day. As the surface anticyclone
shifts offshore, expect a moderate hybrid sea breeze circulation
to develop during the afternoon; first along the Georgia coast,
then farther north along the lower South Carolina coast.
Dewpoints will mix out in the upper 20s/lower 30s well inland,
but there will be steady influx of low-level moisture behind the
sea breeze with dewpoints rising into the upper 30s to mid 40s
across the coastal counties mid-late afternoon. Highs will range
from the lower-mid 70s roughly along/west of I-95 9 (warmest in
the Metter-Claxton-Reidsville corridor) with cooler conditions
at the beaches were the cooler, onshore flow from off the
Atlantic will keep the beaches limited to the mid-upper 60s.

Tonight: A potent southern stream shortwave will move out of the
Southern Plains late tonight with its surface reflection moving
across the lower Mississippi Valley. A warm front is expected to
sharpen across southern portions of Mississippi, Alabama and
Georgia after midnight, which will be located roughly along the
I-16 corridor and arching up the lower South Carolina coast by
daybreak Saturday. Although both low-level moisture and PWATs
are forecast to rapidly increase overnight, the strongest low-
level jetting and associated warm air advection/isentropic
ascent are only forecasted to approach the far southern and
western zones right just before sunrise. Therefore, expect much
of the tonight period to remain dry with rain chances
increasing into the 20-40% range near/just before sunrise,
mainly along/west of the I-95 corridor. Will have to watch for
possible isolated shower activity streaming into south coastal
South Carolina from off the Atlantic, but chances for measurable
rainfall look too low to mention at this time. The operational
synoptic models do tend to be too slow in the development and
movement of isentropically driven showers ahead of mid-
latitude cyclones moving across the Deep South, so this bias
will have to be watched for in later update cycles.

Lows will range from the lower 50s across interior Southeast
Georgia to the lower 60s at the beaches, in Downtown Charleston
and around the Santee-Cooper lakes.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Saturday: A rather tricky and potentially significant weather day is
on tap. In the morning the mid-levels will consist of a weak ridge
just off the Southeast coast while a trough is over the Mid and
Lower MS Valley. The trough will move to the east in the afternoon,
becoming located roughly over the TN Valley and pushing the ridge
away. At the same time, a warm front will lift north through our
area during the morning hours, becoming located north of our area by
the afternoon. A storm system will be to our west and rapidly
approaching. The system will have a plume of deep moisture
associated with it. A band of PWATs should easily exceed 1.5", with
isolated pockets possibly approaching 2". This plume will move east
with the storm and over our area. We'll be solidly in the warm
sector before this occurs. Though, highs could be somewhat
restrained due to abundant cloud cover. Either way, highs should be
in the mid 70s across our GA counties and the upper 70s to near 80
degrees across our GA counties.

All of the models indicate widespread wetting rains across our area
later in the day. But the real challenge will be the severe
potential during the afternoon, possibly into the evening hours.
Most of the models and ensembles have SBCAPEs struggling to reach
1,000 J/kg and MLCAPEs 500 J/kg. Other instability parameters are
either not impressive or vary significantly from model to model.
However, there will be a lot of shear. 0-6 km bulk shear should
easily exceed 50 kt in most locations in the afternoon while SRH
values are also very strong. All of this supports the potential for
supercells, including veering winds with height. The various tornado
parameters still differ a bit across the suite of models. But most
seem to point towards SE GA as being an area of concern.

Likewise, SPC has kept our entire area under a Slight Risk.
Isolated tornadoes are a concern, especially for our GA counties.
But the greatest threat across our entire area will be damaging
winds. Large hail is also possible due to the cold mid/upper level
temperatures.

We'll also note that there are some significant differences between
the CAMS on Saturday. Some have a lot of morning precipitation,
which would limit the severe potential in the afternoon. Other CAMs
hint at possible a round of afternoon convection followed by a
second, late evening round more closely associated with the storm
system and it's cold front. As is usually the case, it's still a
little early to determine how this will work out and what the final
results will be for us.

Luckily, we'll get some much needed rain across our entire area.
Models still keep us generally in the 1-2" range. Though, there
could be much higher amounts locally, especially if certain areas
get impacted by multiple thunderstorms. However, due to the lack of
rainfall this month, the risk of widespread flooding is low as the
dry ground should act like a very thirsty sponge.

Finally, gusty winds are expected ahead of the convection. Wind
gusts are expected to be in the 25-35 mph range. A Lake Wind
Advisory for Lake Moultrie may be needed.

The main band of convection/showers should move offshore around
midnight with a cold front. Drier air is forecasted to move in from
the west after midnight. Low temperatures will be in the upper 50s
to mid 60s.

Sunday: The storm system and it's associated cold front will be
offshore in the morning and quickly moving away. A broad area of
high pressure will spread eastward with time. Strong subsidence
associated with the high will bring our area dry conditions and
mostly sunny skies. Thickness values along with some downslope flow
off the Appalachians should yield highs in the upper 70s to the
lower 80s. Overnight lows will be mild, ranging from the upper 50s
to the mid 60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The WPC is forecasting high pressure over or near the Southeast
through Wednesday. Likewise, the NBM agrees and keeps our area dry
with a gradual warming trend. The next chance of rain in the
forecast is on Thursday.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR. Ceilings will be lowering toward the end of the 18z TAF
period as a warm front lifts north. Winds will increase and
gusts near 25 kt or greater are likely to occur at both
terminals starting around the late morning hours. Showers are
expected to approach from the WSW which could reach the
terminals a few hours prior to 18z, but opted to leave mention
of -SHRA out of the current TAF since our confidence in terms
of timing is relatively low. MVFR cigs are likely to coincide
with showers; however as mentioned before, maintained VFR
through 18Z due to low confidence in timing as model consensus
is lacking. More details should come with the next TAF in terms
of the initiation of strong gusts, showers, and timing of
flight restrictions.

Extended Aviation Outlook: A storm system will bring flight
restrictions and gusty winds Saturday into Saturday night.

.MARINE...
Today: Light winds this morning will become more uniformly east
to southeast afternoon as high pressure shifts offshore and a
modest sea breeze circulation develops along the coast. Winds
are expected to remain less than 10 kt although some localize
enhancements could occur in Charleston Harbor and along the
land/sea interface with the sea breeze. Seas will average 1-2 ft
nearshore waters with 2-3 ft offshore waters.

Tonight: Southeast winds will increase to 10-15 kt with gusts to
20 kt as high pressure shifts farther offshore and a warm front
sharpens to the south. Seas will build to 2-3 ft nearshore
waters with 3-4 ft offshore waters.

Saturday: A storm system will approach the region. Southerly winds
will rapidly increase during the morning hours, becoming strong and
gusty by the afternoon. Steep, wind-driven seas will accompany these
winds. Small Craft Advisories will be needed for all of the waters
for winds and seas, including the Charleston Harbor. Additionally,
there is the potential for a strong line of thunderstorms traversing
the waters during the afternoon or evening hours. Gusts to gale
force, hail, and maybe even a waterspout are the potential impacts
from this convection. The main convection/precipitation is expected
to move offshore later in the evening, with drier air moving in from
the west late at night. Winds and seas will gradually lower.

Sunday: A cold front will be offshore in the morning, quickly moving
away while high pressure builds in from the west.
Westerly winds 10-15 kt during the day will clock around to the
northeast overnight. Seas 3-4 ft in the morning should subside a
foot by the evening.

Monday and Beyond: The NBM and various wave models are forecasting
low winds and seas. No marine headlines are expected.

Rip Currents: A Moderate Risk is in effect for all of our beaches on
Saturday due to gusty onshore winds and elevated seas.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Dewpoints are expected to mix out in the upper 20s/lower 30s
across the interior today resulting in minimum RH values of
20-30%. Fuels remain critically low and even with the lack of
significant wind, an elevated fire danger will be in place again
today. A hybrid pure sea breeze circulation will develop along
the coast early this afternoon and push inland. This will result
in increasing RH mid-late afternoon across most of the Georgia
coastal counties and areas roughly along/east of US-17 in
southern South Carolina. A Fire Danger Statement remains in
effect for all of southern South Carolina and interior Southeast
Georgia per coordination with the various state and federal
fire yesterday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Tides could get high enough to cause minor saltwater inundation
around Charleston during the evening high tide Saturday. There
is also the potential for heavy rainfall during this time which
would exacerbate any flooding. Additional minor coastal
flooding is possible through early next week, mainly along the
southern SC coast. Coastal Flood Advisories may eventually be
needed.

Severe Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms are expected to impact the area
Saturday and Saturday night as a low pressure system moves through
the region. Conditions could be favorable for thunderstorms to
become severe and capable of producing damaging winds, large hail
and possibly even a tornado.

Gales: Strong winds could develop Saturday into Saturday night
offshore. Gusts around 35 kt are possible over the waters as an area
of low pressure moves through the region. Gale Watches and/or
Warnings could be needed.
