.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will gradually weaken across the region into
tonight. A strong cold front will move across the area Friday
evening, followed by cool high pressure through the weekend. A
dry low pressure system will move through the area Sunday night
into Monday, before another low pressure system approaches the
region mid to late next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
As of 640 PM: The forecast appears on track. Changed the hourly
temperatures and dewpoints to align with early evening
observations.

Previous Discussion:
The flow aloft will become increasingly southwesterly with time as a
large, highly amplified, and deep layered low with an associated
broad long wave trough develops across the Upper Midwest and
into the Mississippi Valley. As this occurs, high pressure
across the local region will slowly weaken, as the next cold
front reaches near the southern Appalachians by morning.

The first half of the night will be clear, with no more than a few
thin wisps of cirrus near the Altamaha River associated with the sub-
tropical jet. However, moisture will increase in advance of the cold
front after midnight from the west and southwest, leading to skies
becoming partly to perhaps mostly cloudy near and west of I-95 by 6
AM.

While there are a couple of Hi-Res members that show a few showers
moving into far interior Georgia zones by 12Z, the vast majority of
guidance holds any rainfall west of the region given that the upper
dynamics are still far upstream. Thus we have maintained a rainfree
forecast.

Temperatures will be most challenging, as the dry air mass and winds
becoming light or calm this evening will lead to good radiational
cooling. However, with the increase in cloud cover and more mixing
overnight, temperatures look to hold fairly steady or even rise a
bit before daybreak. For now we have minimum temperatures in the mid
and upper 30s most places west of US-17, with lower and middle 40s
in downtown Charleston, along the coast and near the edges of Lake
Moultrie.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Friday: High pressure across the area early will quickly shift
offshore in advance of a deep/large mid-upper lvl low shifting
across the Midwest with a southward extending cold front approaching
the Southeast United States during the afternoon. Ahead of the
front, a south-southwest flow will advect slightly warmer air and
greater moisture to the region, helping produce few to scattered
showers across western most zones where isentropic lift strengthens
across the area late morning. Expect precip to spread across the
area from west to east as the cold front advances through the area
during the afternoon and evening, but the overall threat of thunder
to remain quite low given weak instability and afternoon highs only
peaking in the lower 60s. However, strong low-lvl wind fields
suggest that some gusty showers and/or rain will be possible until
activity shifts offshore with the departing cold front. The cold
front should shift offshore around sunset, while dry and colder air
enters the region from the west quickly in its wake. Strong cold air
advection should maintain a light west wind through the overnight
period with temps eventually dipping into the low/mid 30s away from
the coast late.

Saturday and Sunday: Dry and cooler conditions are expected as sfc
high pressure spreads across the area from the west while a large
mid/upper lvl low pivots across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
States late weekend into early next week. High temps should only
peak in the upper 40s/lower 50s Saturday, but strong cold air
advection aloft will result in abundant low-lvl mixing and the
likelihood of some rather gusty winds across the area late Saturday
morning into early Saturday evening (up to 25-30 mph). Temps will be
coldest Saturday night under clear skies with most areas dropping
below the freezing mark away from the coast. In general, lows should
reach the upper 20s/lower 30s (coldest well inland). Slightly warmer
conditions are anticipated on Sunday as the mid-upper lvl low shifts
further north and eventually off the Northeast Coast. However, temps
will remain below normal, only warming into the low/mid 50s.

Lake Winds: Strong low-lvl winds along with cold air advection
behind a departing cold front will help set up gusty west winds
(around 25 kt) across Lake Moultrie late Saturday morning into early
Saturday evening. A Lake Wind Advisory could be needed.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A decent upper level system will move through the area Sunday
night and into Monday. Due to limited moisture, anticipate an
increase in cloud cover associated with the system and any
chance of rain area expected to be at less than mentionable
levels. Lots of uncertainty in the forecast by the middle of
next week as models differ significantly on how to handle the
development and movement of an upper level low likely to develop
in the southwestern states early next week. Favor a solution
more like the GFS with the system cutting off and then taking
its time to try to shift eastward. The bias of models to to move
cutoffs too quickly. As a result kept the forecast dry through
Tuesday night and then played down rain chances from the
ensemble blends Wednesday through Thursday, with nothing more
than slight chance POPs Wednesday and Wednesday night and
nothing more than 30 POPs Thursday and Thursday night. A gradual
warming trend is anticipated through this period with highs in
the mid to upper 50s on Monday climbing well into the 60s by
Wednesday and Thursday.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions to start off the 00Z TAF period. Clouds will arrive
early tomorrow AM. There should not be any restrictions associated
with this cloud cover, however a brief moment of MVFR cigs can not
be ruled out.

A cold front will pass through the region tomorrow afternoon/evening
bringing gusty southwest winds and scattered showers and possible
low ceilings to both KSAV and KCHS. Have not included any
restrictions in the TAF at this time, however restrictions may need
to be introduced in a later TAF issuance.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions are possible at both
CHS and SAV terminals Friday afternoon into early Friday night due
to low clouds and gusty showers and/or rain associated with a
passing cold front. Gusty winds are then expected at both terminals
late Saturday morning into early Saturday evening (west around 25
kt), but VFR conditions will likely prevail late weekend into early
next week as high pressure spreads across the region.

.MARINE...
This evening and tonight: High pressure centered across Florida
and the central Gulf of Mexico will start to relax its hold on
the local waters, as the next upstream cold front moves into
the Southeast and northern Gulf waters late. Winds will
generally be SW at or below 15 kt, except for some winds as high
as 20 kt across the outer georgia waters late as the pressure
gradient tightens a bit more. Seas that are 2 or 3 feet this
evening will build maybe another foot or so after midnight with
a little more favorable fetch to occur.

Friday through Monday. Winds/seas will increase across local waters
Friday morning and afternoon within a south/southwest flow ahead of
a strong cold front approaching from the west. Wind gusts could
approach 25 kt by late Friday afternoon as low-lvl wind fields
increase within the warm sector. However, Small Craft Advisories are
more likely across all waters Friday night into Saturday as the cold
front shift offshore with strong cold air advection in its wake.
In general, west-northwest winds could peak near 25-30 kt Saturday
while seas build as high as 2-4 ft across nearshore waters south of
Edisto, SC, 4-6 ft across nearshore waters off the Charleston County
coast, and 5-7 ft across offshore Georgia waters. The pressure
gradient will then begin to slowly relax Saturday evening, resulting
in winds/seas falling below small craft advisory levels late
Saturday night. High pressure will then spread into the region from
the west with conditions expected to remain below small craft
advisory levels across local waters into early next week.
