Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 1250 AM EDT Wed Mar 17 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A stalled front will remain across the area before pushing north as a warm front Wednesday night. A strong cold front will then move through late Thursday followed by another strong cold front late Friday and Friday night. Colder high pressure will then build in and prevail through early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/... A large area of rain with embedded tstms will continue to march east to the coast over the next 2-3 hours while slowly weakening. It does appear measurable rainfall will reach into the coastal counties and categorical pops have been expanded and increased to 90-100% for areas along and east of the line. Temperatures will likely change little overnight, except over coastal Georgia where they will fall a bit more as rain falls. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/... Moderate to high confidence in the pattern through Friday, although low confidence regarding the forecast details through early Thursday evening. Wednesday/Wednesday night: A stalled front is expected to linger over the area into Wednesday night before pushing back north through the area later Wednesday night as a warm front. A few showers are expected just about anywhere on Wednesday, with a few thunderstorms possible near the Altamaha River during the afternoon, with rain shifting northward more into SC Wednesday night along the retreating warm front. Some patchy fog is also likely to start off the day and possibly again Wednesday night. Temperatures will be tricky as much depends on the amount of cloud/rain coverage and timing of the retreat of the warm front. For now we have leaned cooler toward persistence with the high pressure wedge having more influence Wednesday. Temperatures should then generally rise Wednesday night after the passage of the warm front. Thursday/Thursday night: The main concern this period is regarding the potential for severe storms, mainly Thursday afternoon/early evening, as a strong cold front moves through the region. As is typical for this time of year there is abundant deep layer shear supportive of organized convection, although questions remain regarding the amount of instability. Expect strong low-level warm air advection to warm temps to near 80 most locales away from the coast and strong low-level winds to mix down creating rather breezy conditions with gusts over 30 mph likely. Some storms could become severe with damaging straight-lines winds the main hazard, although a few tornadoes (potentially strong) and/or large hail are also possible. The best chance of severe weather, especially tornadoes, looks to be near and west of I-95 as cooler and more stable air should reside near the coast due to the onshore/southerly winds from off the chilly Atlantic Ocean. Rain chances will diminish early Thursday evening as the main line of storms moves through, although still can't rule out a few lingering showers/storms into the overnight due to lingering moisture/upper forcing associated with the upper low. Low temperatures should range from near 50 inland to mid 50s at the coast. Friday: A reinforcing backdoor cold front will approach from the north early in the day before moving into the Lowcountry late, possibly with a few showers. Highs should get close to normal near 70 most locales. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure will build in from the north on Saturday and remain centered over the mid-Atlantic into early next week. Some models indicate a coastal trough developing, which could bring a risk of showers mainly to coastal areas with enhanced low level convergence. By and large, most of the area should be dry through early next week. Otherwise, gusty winds are likely, especially near the coast and at the beaches, as a tight pressure gradient remains in place. Temperatures through the period will be below normal. && .AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... KCHS: Approaching shower activity should be exiting the terminal by 06z. Any lingering light rain should not have much of an impact, if any. IFR cigs will lower to LIFR and below alternate minimums through the night with some fog likely developing after 08-09z. Vsbys are not expected to any lower and 4-5SM given stratus should not build completely down to the surface. Cigs should rise above alternate minimums by 14z with IFR cigs giving way to MVFR by 17z and VFR by 04z as a warm front lifts north. KSAV: Approaching showers/tstms should be exiting the terminal around 06z with some impacts lingering as long as 07z. The mention of TSRA will be dependent on radar and lightning trends at issuance time. MVFR cigs will lower to IFR by 10z and occasionally drop just below alternate minimums through 13z with a little MVFR fog. IFR will improve to MVFR by 18z and VFR by 03z as a warm front lifts north. Extended Aviation Outlook: High confidence in restrictions much of the period through Wednesday night as a warm front lingers across the area. More restrictions expected from showers and thunderstorms passing through late Thursday along a cold front and then mainly from low clouds along another cold front Friday night into Saturday, possibly lingering into Sunday, especially at KSAV. Gusty winds also expected Thursday through Sunday. && .MARINE... This Evening and Tonight: Weak low pressure will shift further away to the northeast early tonight while a wedge of high pressure persists inland. The wedge front could slowly drift south and near the coast during the overnight period, resulting in 10-15 kt southwest winds turning west-northwest across northern waters and the CHS Harbor at times. Further south, southwest winds between 10- 15 kt are expected through the night with even some gusts up to 20 kt across offshore Georgia waters. Seas will generally range between 3-5 ft across nearshore waters and 4-5 ft across offshore Georgia waters. Although the setup is not particularly favorable for sea fog given water temps have warmed considerably in recent weeks, lower 60 dewpoints are expected across waters, which could support some patchy fog at times across nearshore waters tonight. Wednesday through Sunday: Moderate confidence this period. A stationary front lingering over the area on Wednesday will lift north as a warm front Wednesday night. Winds and seas will then increase on Thursday in advance of a cold front approaching from the west. Small Craft Advisories are likely for most waters. In addition, a line of heavy showers and possible severe thunderstorms will accompany the front. The front will push east of the area Thursday night. There will be a brief period of improvement Friday, then conditions will deteriorate again behind a reinforcing cold front Friday night with Small Craft Advisories expected for all waters. Gale Warnings will also be possible, especially beyond 20 nm. Rip Currents: Strong onshore winds will cause a moderate risk along the SC coast Thursday, possibly even along the GA coast.
