.SYNOPSIS...
A coastal storm will bring unsettled weather to our area
through Saturday night. High pressure will then build into the
region next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Latest surface analysis shows a wedge of high pressure inland with
an area of low pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Radar
and observations indicate light rain has spread into the
southeast Georgia counties. This trend will continue through the
afternoon. Further north, there is still a bit of dry air to
overcome with SPC mesoanalysis showing PWats generally in the
0.5-0.8 inch range so measurable rain will be harder to come by
into late afternoon and evening. It will be cloudy and
unseasonably cool with high temperatures peaking only in the
lower middle 50s. In addition, a tight pressure gradient will
keep support northeast winds gusting to 20-25 mph, higher right
along the coast and at the beaches. The main changes with the
early afternoon forecast update was to PoPs and temperatures to
reflect latest trends.
Tonight: The surface low looks to either travel across the
Florida peninsula or redevelop on the nearby Atlantic site
overnight in combination with the cyclone aloft in southern
Georgia and northern Florida. Things get really interesting, but
also rather complicated during this transition, especially since
the robust blocking high remains to the north.
The central pressure of the surface low drops some 3-5 mb from
earlier, which will continue to enhance the local gradient.
Winds could certainly be strong enough over the coastal
counties where we will need to consider a Wind Advisory. Our
latest forecast shows conditions staying just shy of the
required criteria, but given a 50-55 kt low level jet moving in,
it is possible that later shifts could be prompted to raise an
advisory. North and northeast winds will reach as high as 25 to
35 mph, and strongest near and along the coast. Similarly on
Lake Moultrie, conditions will be close to the requirement of a
Lake Wind Advisory. But after coordinating with WFO Columbia, we
have chosen not to do so at this time.
Moisture transport increases further from off the Atlantic and
out of the Gulf of Mexico, which occurs in sync with dynamics
aloft that move in. The resulting rain shield will spread
further northward, and we have shown PoP as great as 60-90% most
places, except for some 40-50% chances along parts of the
northwest tier, which is further removed from the surface low
and where the air mass is slightly drier than further south and
east.
It's becoming somewhat likely that bands of moderate or heavy
rains will set up along the coastal sections of southeast
georgia, maybe as far north as Jasper and Beaufort County in
South Carolina. This is where we will find impressive
convergence on the northwest side of the surface low. The HREF
does have an ensemble max 6 hour period of 1-1.5 inch rainfall
between 06z and 12Z Saturday, suggesting that at least minor
flooding will occur. Depending upon the exact strength and
location of the coastal low, rainfall amounts could vary quite a
bit from our latest forecast.
It'll be a cool to cold rain given that evaporative cooling will
allow for temps to fall into the mid and upper 40s away from
the immediate coast. Combined with the wind, it'll feel even
colder.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A deepening coastal low pressure system is expected to be
located just off the GA coast at daybreak Saturday. It will
continue to deepen and wrap up as it moves slowly northeast
through Saturday night. The models have trended a bit farther to
the west and wetter with the low, now showing the majority of
the forecast area picking up at least some precipitation. Fairly
persistent isentropic ascent will occur across the forecast
area Saturday through Saturday evening. Model consensus shows
many areas picking up about an inch of storm total
precipitation. The pattern is conducive to some banded
precipitation with some locations potentially receiving more
significant rainfall. Several models show the heaviest rainfall
northwest of the upper low track, placing upwards of 2-3" across
inland SC/GA. Meanwhile, at least one model shows some heavy
rainfall potential across the eastern Charleston Tri-County area
Saturday evening. Needless to say, while our confidence is
pretty high that widespread precipitation will occur, it is
currently very difficult to pin down where the heavier amounts
will be. The main concern is the potential for heavy rainfall to
occur near the coast coincident with one of the unusually high
tides.
Saturday looks quite cool due to extensive cloud cover,
persistent rain, and breezy north winds. High temps are only
expected to reach the middle 50s.
Rain should taper off Saturday overnight, then some partial
clearing is expected on Sunday. This should allow high temps to
reach the low/mid 60s. Upper ridging and sunny skies on Monday
will push temps into the upper 60s to around 70.
Lake Winds: A strong gradient is expected Saturday and Saturday
night as high pressure builds from the west and a powerful
coastal low moves up our coast. Frequent 25 kt gusts on Lake
Moultrie seem likely during this period and a Lake Wind Advisory
will probably be needed.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure will yield dry weather and seasonable
temperatures Monday night through Thursday. An approaching
upper trough and cold front could bring showers to the area
Friday.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR will prevail through this evening, before conditions deteriorate
overnight into Saturday as low pressure begins to lift northeast off
the Florida and Georgia coasts. Low clouds will spread into the
area, with guidance consistent in showing at least MVFR ceilings
beginning early Saturday morning. Also included mention of IFR
at KSAV where confidence is highest. There could be visibility
restrictions in rain, especially on Saturday.
Gusty north to northeast winds will persist through the period,
with the highest winds likely to occur late tonight through
Saturday morning. Model soundings also indicate 45-55 knots
around 2kft which supports mention of low level wind shear as
well.
Extended Aviation Outlook: MVFR ceilings likely to develop later
tonight with IFR ceilings expected Saturday and Saturday night.
Vsby occasionally reduced to MVFR in rain showers, especially
late tonight through Saturday evening. Gusty NE winds tonight
through Saturday evening. Low-level wind shear possible Saturday
into Saturday evening.

.MARINE...
Today and tonight: Conditions over the maritime community will
become increasingly dangerous in response to low pressure in the
the Gulf of Mexico today, before it redevelops or emerges off
the northeast Florida coast late tonight. The resulting gradient
between this low and robust high pressure to the north will lead
to solid Small Craft Advisories outside of Charleston Harbor,
then eventually to solid Gales. As a result, we have a staggered
starting time to the Gale Warnings, which will then be
accompanied by at least a Small Craft Advisory for Charleston
Harbor. There is even some potential for Storm Warnings on the
outer Georgia waters late tonight.
As of this time, N and NE winds will be as high as 20 to 30 kt
this morning over the ocean, before increasing some 5 kt this
afternoon, when the Gales will begin at different times from
south to north. Seas will build in response to these winds,
reaching as large as 5-8 ft within 20 nm, but up to 10 ft on the
AMZ374 waters.
As the surface low draws closer and the surface high to the
north strengthens a couple of millibars, winds and seas will
climb even further. Gusts of 35 to 45 kt will be common over the
ocean, and at least around 30 kt in Charleston Harbor, if not
higher. Seas will rise another 2 to 4 feet.
Mariners should pay very close attention to the forecast, and be
mindful of the extremely hazardous conditions. Also note,
isolated t-storms can occur out near the Gulf Stream tonight.
The powerful coastal low will slowly move up the GA/SC coast
Saturday and Saturday night, resulting in hazardous marine
conditions. There is good model agreement on solid Gale
conditions over the Atlantic waters Saturday and Saturday night
before the gradient begins to relax on Sunday as the low
departs. Gale conditions are also likely in Charleston Harbor on
Saturday, primarily due to frequent 34+ kt gusts. At the moment,
we have Gale Warnings for the Atlantic coastal waters through
Saturday night or mid-morning on Sunday depending on the zone.
We only have a Small Craft Advisory in Charleston Harbor at the
moment, primarily because the Gale conditions would not begin
until the third forecast period which is a little distant for
issuing a Gale Warning. Later forecast shifts will likely need
to upgrade the SCA for Charleston Harbor.
A decent NNW gradient will continue through Monday evening as
high pressure builds in behind the coastal low. Small Craft
Advisories are likely to be needed once the Gale Warnings come
down early Sunday. Conditions should fall below headline
criteria by Monday night over the nearshore waters, though seas
may remain elevated over the offshore GA waters well into next
week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is potential for minor flooding with the evening high
tide across the Charleston and Colleton county coasts (occurring
~9 PM in the Charleston Harbor) and a Coastal Flood Advisory
could be needed.
In addition, large waves and the strong winds will occur in
tandem with the high tides, resulting in erosion along
beachfront locations.
A considerable coastal flood event will continue through Sunday
morning due to a combination of high astronomical tides, strong
NNE winds, and low pressure. Minor to moderate coastal flooding
is anticipated with this evening's and Saturday evening's high
tide while major coastal flooding is expected during the
Saturday/Sunday morning high tides. It still looks like the
Saturday morning high tide will be the highest of the event
since the wind direction/speeds will be most favorable for
surge. Models are trending toward a more offshore wind component
by Sunday morning which should start to bring down the anomalies
late Saturday night.
Another important aspect of the forecast will be the extent of
rainfall. If showers occur around/at the time of high tide, any
future or ongoing flooding could be exacerbated. The best chance
for precip will be this evening through Saturday evening.
High Surf: Breakers in the surf zone will reach as high around
4 feet today, and potentially a foot or so higher tonight and
Saturday. Should that occur, then a High Surf Advisory would be
required. We will continue to monitor.
