Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 1203 PM EST Sun Dec 12 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will build south of the region this afternoon into Monday while several weak disturbances track to the north. A cold front will move through Tuesday morning. High pressure builds Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. A warm front will lift across the area Wednesday night followed by a cold front Thursday night into Friday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... 1155am update...Cancelled the Wind Advisory. West winds will continue to gust as high as 40 mph in higher terrain this afternoon, but advisory-level gusts are not expected. Previous Discussion... Strong low pressure will track from northern Quebec province to Labrador today, while a cold front exits across the Maritimes and high pressure builds south of the region. High pressure will build south of the region tonight, while an upper level disturbance crosses northern Maine. The tight pressure gradient between low pressure to the north and high pressure to the south will support gusty west/southwest winds across the region today. A Wind Advisory remains in effect across northern and west-central portions of the forecast area through 1 PM for wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph. Wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph are expected across Downeast areas today. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy/partly sunny skies across northern areas today with partly/mostly sunny skies Downeast. The upper level disturbance crossing northern Maine tonight will bring partly/mostly cloudy skies to northern portions of the forecast area with isolated snow showers also possible late. Mostly clear skies are expected Downeast tonight. High temperatures today will range from the lower to mid 30s north, to the mid to upper 30s interior Downeast, with upper 30s to lower 40s along the Downeast coast. Low temperatures tonight will range from the mid to upper 20s north, to around 30 interior Downeast with lower 30s along the Downeast coast. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Mainly dry and seasonable conditions are expected Monday through Tuesday night as high pressure builds towards the region. Upslope snow showers and flurries are possible Monday morning, mainly along the International Border. A shortwave trough associated with the progression of the left exit region of the polar jet will move across Quebec during the day Monday, forming a weak surface reflection. The low will travel north of the area and into the Maritimes Monday night, dragging a cold front through by early Tuesday morning. Isolated to scattered snow showers will develop across the north later Monday into Monday evening ahead of the front. Given the marginal temperatures and forcing situated to the north, little to no accumulation is expected. Temperatures Monday will be unseasonably mild with highs ranging from the mid 30s to mid 40s as all of Maine resides within the warm sector of the low passing to the north. Tuesday morning will be windy, particularly across northern Maine as the pressure gradient briefly tightens between the low departing into the Maritimes and high pressure building into Quebec from Ontario. Winds will diminish during the afternoon and evening, becoming light and variable by around daybreak Wednesday as high pressure settles overhead. Lows were shifted below the NBM given favorable radiational cooling conditions, especially after midnight. Forecast lows range from the single digits across the North Woods to the mid to upper 20s along the coast. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Wednesday starts with surface and upper level ridging in control and seasonable temperatures. A warm front will lift across the area Wednesday night into Thursday, leading to another snow to wintry mix to rain scenario as a strong surface low pressure system lifts northward across Ontario and towards the Hudson Bay. Continued a mention of freezing rain with cold air damming expected to keep sub freezing temperatures near the surface into the day Thursday. By Thursday evening the entire area will be within the warm sector. Significantly above normal temperatures are anticipated, which may challenge records at a couple locations such as Millinocket where Thursday's record high is 45 degrees. A cold front will move through the area early Thursday night or Friday morning with falling temperatures expected during the day Friday. More substantial uncertainty arises by Saturday with timing and evolution of an upper level trough moving across the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes. This is the next threat for a widespread mostly snow event, but it is too early to say with confidence that snow will occur given the uncertainty. && .AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... NEAR TERM: VFR conditions are expected today through tonight. Isolated snow showers possible across northern areas later tonight. West/southwest winds 20 to 30 knots with gusts up to 35 to 40 knots today. Southwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots tonight.
