High pressure builds into the region today. Low pressure
approaches from the west Thursday night and Friday, crossing the
region Friday night then slowly moving northeast through the
Maritimes this weekend. Another potential system approaches from
the south on Monday and moves into the Maritimes on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1215pm am update...Adjusted temps in line with trends. The
focus remains on preparation for tomorrow. 12Z guidance still
shows the threat of a trace or a couple hundredths of an inch
of freezing rain in northern zones during the morning. The real
punch comes in the afternoon as the column cools and snow
overspreads most of the area by evening...except coastal
Downeast. Have increased QPF and snow amounts for the afternoon
and lowered temps throughout the day. Amounts over 2 inches are
possible north and west of I-95 by evening.

Current sfc analysis shows sfc low over the central Great Lakes with
ridge axis very slow building twd the state. Clear skies are allowing
temps to tumble into the teens acrs the northwest. Caribou still
sitting at 27F while Presque Isle is down to 18F so lower elevations
are obviously decoupling late tonight with strong subsidence
inversion this morning. Skies wl rmn sunny throughout the holiday
though thin cirrus wl approach fm the west ahead of the next system
late this afternoon. Max temps still fcst to climb into the 40s acrs
the entire region, well above normal for this time of year.

Upr lvl ridge shifts south and east this evening as trof digs twd
the east. Clouds wl be on the increase late tonight with entire
region seeing cloudy skies by Friday morning. Main wx-maker wl move
in after daybreak Fri morning though cannot rule out frzg rain acrs
the northwest by 09z Friday. Slgt chc of light snow wl move toward
the Rte 1 corridor at the tail end of the period as temps wet-bulb
down. Btwn 06-12z Friday nwrn zones may see < 1/2 inch of snow with
a glaze of ice by morning with lows in the u20s acrs the north.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Travel Impacts Likely Late Friday Afternoon into Saturday...

Decent agreement in global and higher-res models showing a low
pressure tracking SE from the Quebec/VT border around 12z Friday
to the Downeast coast by 21z Friday. Aloft at 500mb we will
have a sharp potent shortwave with decent vorticity max rounding
the base of the trough. This will be setting up an area of
divergence aloft in the jet stream to support surface
convergence for the low pressure once it reaches the Maine
coast. Intially precipitation that starts Friday AM will be
caused by overrunning with southerly 850mb winds and below
freezing surface temperatures. Modeled soundings show the
potential of intially being wet bulb produced snowfall but as
the column mainly becomes above 0C except at the surface there
is a decent chance of freezing rain especially in the North
Woods to Route 11. In southern locations mainly expect rain
chances to go up as temperatures here warm quicker above
freezing. The Highlands, north into the southern Route 1
corridor of Aroostook county will need to weed out the colder
air locked at the surface. Cold air damming isn't strong so
expect the sfc temps to warm above freezing for a rain/snow mix
mainly Presque Isle southward. North of here as the low tracks
south expect mainly snow w/ some rain mix to slowly shift
towards snow as the flow aloft cools the column. Accumulations
will hold off till the colder air arrives.

After sunset expect the 500mb trough to tilt significantly
negative moving a very supportive area of convergence and lift
with the surface low. This will grab and turn the system
northward into New Brunswick while deepening the low pressure
which will in turn really kick on the cold air advection aloft.
This will cool the column down to the surface so expect the snow
levels to fall quickly and much of the northern zones to switch
to all snow and really begin accumulating on all surfaces. The
rain/snow line will crash south into the greater Bangor area by
midnight and quickly begin accumulating making roads slippery.
The rain/snow line will make it to the Downeast coast by
daybreak with even here seeing some accumulating snows and
potentially slick travel. What becomes interesting is the models
have been trending heavier snowfall totals across the North
into portions of the Eastern Highlands. This is because of a
tightening temperature gradient aloft creating a stronger FGEN
forcing with a deformation band forming on the backside of the
deepening low pressure. If this band does indeed set up it could
potentially create an area of moderate to heavier snow and
based on the track that would likely be in Eastern Aroostook to
Northern Penobscot counties. The trend for this feature will
need to be monitored for in terms of snowfall totals and later
headline changes.

Lets talk totals... Intially Friday AM we could see in portions
of the North Woods, St. John Valley and Eastern Aroostook a
light glazing of ice from freezing rain. Then for areas that
stay cold enough for snowfall the ratios will be very low and
sticking unlikely with warm surfaces. Fri evening into Sat AM
expect the ratios to improve to 10-12:1. That being said we
expect a widespread 5-7 inches from Moosehead Lake into the
North Woods to the St. John Valley and into Northeast Aroostook
county. We have gone and hoisted a Winter Storm Watch from
Friday into Sat Night. This will be over a longer time period
and the concern is a combination of this being the first real
storm system of the year, Thanksgiving return travel in the
populated areas and the potential for higher snowfall totals.
If higher trends do continue its possible a low end warning or
high end advisory may be needed in portions of the CWA. In
southern Aroostook into the Central Highlands snowfall will be
around 2 to 4 inches but a Winter Weather Advisory may be needed
if snowfall totals trend higher. In the Greater Bangor area to
the Downeast coast 1-2 inches is possible by Saturday morning
posing potentially some travel impacts from ice (due to previous
rains freezing on surfaces) and snowfall.

Steady snow will taper to snow showers from south to north
during the day Saturday. As the pressure gradient tightens we
can expect westerly winds to increase with gusts 20-30mph. Any
of the lighter fluffy snow on top may blow around especially in
the farm fields of Aroostook county. Not expecting a ton of
problems from blowing snow but brief lower visibility is
possible in the evening after the sun sets. Winds will remain
gusty through Sat Night into early Sun AM. Temperatures will be
falling back into the 20s from Bangor to the coast with teens to
low 20s in the north.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Given the snowpack likely on the ground in much of Northern
areas expect a chilly Sun AM with lows in the teens to low 20s.
Weak high pressure will keep the area dry but expect just partly
sunny skies with moisture advecting in aloft as 700mb winds
shift SW ahead of the next potential weather maker in the form
of a potent shortwave diving southeast into the Mid Atlantic
states. Although there remains plenty of spread in the ensemble
members there is several members and 00z GFS ops and 12z ECMWF
ops suggesting a clipper low pressure diving into the Mid
Atlantic from Ohio Valley. This would set up a potential Miller
B storm along the Northeast coastline with plenty of cold air to
work with thanks to a surface ~1020mb high to the north. Given
the several members suggesting a system and operational runs
opted to bump POPs to solid chance POPs going above what NBM
suggested. So overall there is plenty of uncertainty on track &
upper level support, which makes sense since the piece of energy
for this potential is back across the Aleutian Islands of
Alaska. Depending on what happens with this system overall long
wave troughing is likely Tue-Wed before the upper level flow
becomes mostly zonal. Weak disturbances within the zonal flow
will keep the chance of occasional snow showers in the forecast.

Looking at temperatures...As we head towards very late November
and early December expect highs/lows to continue to run below
average with several cold nights possible especially in places
with snowpack. Monday morning lows look to be the coldest this
season with true winter readings. Potential exist for single
digits and low teens across the north half of the CWA and teens
to low 20s in southern locations. We will rise a few degrees on
the days following but still remaining below average.

NEAR TERM: VFR next 24 hours with unrestricted vsby. May see
SCT-BKN VFR clouds move in after 07z tonight.

SHORT TERM: Fri...MVFR/IFR cigs/vsby with rain & snow likely at
northern sites, rain at southern sites. Winds generally light
and variable at all sites.

Fri night...IFR/LIFR cigs/vsby with rain & snow changing to all
snow at all sites. Accumulations likely. Winds shift W 5-15kts.
LLWS possible.

Sat...IFR cigs/vsby early at southern sites becoming MVFR/VFR
cigs by midday. Snow tapers to snow showers in the morning.
