Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 123 AM EST Wed Feb 10 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will move south of the area tonight and exit across the Maritimes early Wednesday. High pressure will build across the region on Thursday with low pressure to pass well south of the area on Friday. High pressure is expected to build in from the west on Saturday with low pressure to cross the region Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... 1 AM Update: Light snow continues along the immediate coast early this morning, but will taper over the next couple hours. Did receive one report of three-tenths of snow right along the Hancock County coast. Little additional snow accum is anticipated given 6 to 9 sm vis obs at KBHB and radar returns from KCBW and KGYX are light or nonexistent due to overshooting. Best tracer of these remaining snow showers is nighttime microphysics satellite imagery showing OVC skies where -SN is being reported. High clouds have increased across the north with temperatures continue steady or dropping, while lower clouds are overspreading Downeast. Previous discussion: The very fast moving low located over the Gulf of Maine will continue to quickly move off to the E. The snow accompanying this system is expected to remain in the coastal areas with a chance of snow in areas as far north as the Northwoods and Southern Aroostook. However, the majority of snow accumulation will remain along the coast. Model consensus has kept the majority of the QPF offshore with snow accumulation around an inch near Bangor and Bar Harbor. An inverted trof that extends from the backside of the low into the western areas and as far north as the Northwoods and Southern Aroostook is expected to aid in convergence. The NAM as well as the high res models show this feature with light snow setting up in this area, but expected to be less than an inch of accumulation. The low will exit out to the waters by tomorrow morning, bringing tightening pressure gradients across the eastern parts of the state. WNW winds are expected to increase throughout the day for the entire FA, especially over the coastal and outer waters. In addition, clouds should clear out with partly sunny to clear skies, bringing temperatures back up to seasonably normal. Previous discussions and model runs showed a possibility of snow squalls due to high snow squall parameters across the far north. Although instability and 925-850mb lapse rate remain high, there is no well defined boundary for the squalls to develop. In addition, small 0-2km Theta E difference and surface convergence in recent model runs do not provide enough confidence to put snow squalls into the forecast. However, with the abundant moisture and instability, expect convective snow showers with possible heavy falling snow with reduced visibility due to breezy conditions in the afternoon. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... NW flow will continue Wed night and Thu, with potential for isold snow showers and/or flurries on Wed evng acrs the north. Cold temps will continue into early next week. Highs in the teens across the north and low 20s over Downeast through Monday. Overnight lows will fall into the single digits above and below zero, with a few cooler nights possible given sky conditions. Next disturbance is set to arrive late in the weekend. Guidance has trended a bit further north. ECMWF guidance continues to be quick along with the GEM with full energy transfer occurring with 12z GEM over the Gulf of Maine. EC, meanwhile, is out of phase as coastal low heads off of the NC coast with nrn stream still over the nrn Plains. 12z GFS is slower and continues to maintain some strength to the parent low inland, with overrunning pcpn being predominant. In either case (GFS vs GEM), temperatures are cool enough to support snow for much of the CWA, but final track will determine ptypes. Opted to keep everything snow amid the cold temps in place.
