.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will cross the region on Friday. Low pressure
approaches later Friday night then cross the Gulf of Maine on
Saturday. High pressure builds in Sunday before another low
pressure passes south of the area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
1245 am update...
Clr skies acrs the majority of the region wl allow temps to
plummet into the single digits tonight acrs the north and teens
over Downeast. Quick refresh of temps and dwpts with this
update but not chgs to projected mins.

Previous discussion:
The cold front will apch from the w late this afternoon and move
through the region by early evening. Snow showers were setting
up again out ahead of the front in an area of good llvl
convergence along w/a llvl jet of 35 kts noted at 850 mbs. The
12z GEM and NMM handled the snow shower activity well. The
heaviest activity was moving across Aroostook County where up to
1/2 of an inch of new snow could accumulate. The action looks
like it will wind down as the front exits to the east and the
forcing weakens by early evening. W winds 15-20 w/gusts up to 30
mph this afternoon will be shifting to the NW by early evening
behind the front. The winds will be dropping off by late evening
as the gradient weakens. Visible satl imagery showed some
clearing this afternoon behind the cold front and this clearing
will continue tonight as drier air works in and high pres starts
building in from the sw. After a rather mild day, it will turn
much colder overnight and w/snow cover, especially across the
northern areas, temps will drop off sharply after midnight. Some
areas across the far n and nw could seeing single numbers w/a
few sites in the NW Woods seeing AOB 0F.

Dry and sunny day for New Years Day w/high pres moving across
the Gulf of Maine waters. It will be much colder than it was
today w/daytime temps forecast to be in the near or just
slightly above seasonal normals. High clouds will start to move
later in the day ahead of the next apchg storm system.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Friday night will feature early radiational cooling and a
shallow inversion...mostly towards Aroostook County where lows
will dip into the single digits. Temperatures will stabilize or
rise later in the night with increasing clouds and wind.
Precipitation is increasing likely to break out in the
southwestern portion of the forecast area later Friday night.
Saturday will be dominated by snow. A southern stream shortwave
will travel out of the Ohio Valley and phase with a northern
stream shortwave in the Great Lakes region late Friday night.
Cyclogenesis is expected to occur along the southern New England
coast Saturday morning and the deepening surface low will
quickly track to a location south of Nova Scotia by Saturday
evening. The intensifying storm will produce some heavier banded
snow as indicated by 700mb FGEN, and based on the southern
track, the heaviest amounts will likely stretch from southern
Piscataquis County towards north-central Washington County. Have
shifted this heavy band a bit further south with today's
package such that the Bangor area is now in the 5 to 7 inch
range. There's still a chance this max band may shift slightly
south. With greater confidence in the southern track, have also
pushed amounts over 4 inches down towards the coast. All zones
will require at least an advisory and the corridor with heavier
banded snow could require some low end warnings. With some
instability aloft, snowfall rates could hit over an inch an hour
in the heavier bands. The storm will be a fast mover and should
help prevent too many reports above the 7 to 8 inch range. The
least amount of snow this round will probably be in the Saint
John Valley. There is warm nose aloft that could cause some
sleet in southern zones...as well as mixing with rain near the
coast. Have not added blowing snow on Saturday yet, but this
could be a factor for southern zones with this storm.

The snow will end quickly Saturday evening with clearing skies
and decreasing winds. Even without any cold air advection behind
the storm, lows will dip into the teens and single digits and
will have to consider the threat of patchy freezing fog as we
get a little closer. High pressure continues to dominate Sunday
with increasing clouds and seasonably mild temperatures after
the early morning inversion erodes.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The long term forecast is dominated by a southern stream cut-off
low that is expected to wobble northward from the lower
Mississippi Valley towards the Ohio Valley and eastward to New
England. This cut-off isn't expected to phase with any northern
stream shortwaves and will take a slow and somewhat erratic path
towards the area.  In general, cyclogenesis is expected along
the Delmarva or North Carolina coast on Sunday and a surface low
will meander towards the New England coast Sunday night into
Tuesday or Wednesday. A wrap around occlusion could slowly push
northward into the forecast area Monday into Tuesday while
decaying. There will be little cold air in place ahead of this
storm and any snow that falls will be heavy and wet with warmer
temps behind the occlusion. While PoPs were increased into the
likely category with this forecast package, confidence in
forecasting timing and amounts in this synoptic scenario is
quite low. The potential for a lot of heavy wet snow is there
and model discrepancies narrowed a bit today, but specific
details will be elusive until we get closer. Blocking in the
North Atlantic will keep this cut-off low in the vicinity for
much of next week with temperatures well above normal. In fact,
highs will be in the mid to upper 30s for much of next week and
after Sunday night, lows will be in the 20s to lower 30s.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
NEAR TERM: VFR expected next 24 hours. NW winds will diminish
through the overnight with backing around fm the southwest late
tomorrow afternoon.

SHORT TERM:
Friday night...VFR and light winds.

Late Friday night through Saturday...IFR to LIFR in snow for all
sites. IFR cigs. NE winds gusting to 25kt along the coast.

Saturday night into Sunday...Predominately VFR. Slight chance
of freezing fog Saturday night. Light winds.

Sunday night into Tuesday...Potential for IFR in snow and IFR
cigs.

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: Have cancelled the remaining small craft advisories
for the coastal waters. Seas still running around 5 feet, but
will continue to trend down, and in collaboration with WFO Gray
have dropped the remaining advisories.

For New Years Day, NW winds 10-15 kt dropping back to less than 10 kts.
Seas 3-4 ft subsiding to 2-3 ft.

SHORT TERM: Expect a high end SCA on Saturday into Saturday
night with a few gale force gusts. There is a decent shot at
gale conditions late Sunday night into Monday...followed by SCAs
for Monday night and again Tuesday night into Thursday.

2020 will likely end as the 2nd warmest year on record in
Caribou, but will end well shy of the all-time warmest year in
2010. Weather records began in 1939.
