.SYNOPSIS...
An occluded front will cross the region early today. A strong
cold front will cross the area late this afternoon. Cold high
pressure will build in from the west Tuesday into Wednesday
while strong low pressure remains across the Maritimes. Another
cold front will cross the region Thursday. High pressure will
build toward the area Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
6 AM Update...A pre-warm frontal band of snow showers came
across the north early this morning followed by a bit of a
break. Mesoscale models show the bulk of precipitation coming
through from late morning through early afternoon. Warming is
pushing north on strong S winds this morning. However, the warm
advection is expected to abruptly end around midday as the
triple point secondary low along the coast begins to take hold.
Kept precip mostly snow over far north with a change/mix with
rain just short of northern Maine. Adjusted temps a bit early
this morning. Otherwise, no major changes this hour.

Low pressure tracking from eastern Ontario into western Quebec
this morning will pull an occluded front into the area. Snow
will spread across the north with rain Downeast. Warmer air
surging north on strong south winds early this morning will
change the snow over to rain from south to north across all but
far northern areas by late this morning. Snow amounts of around
3 inches over the far north are possible by midday before the
occlusion slides to the east. The occlusion will bring a strong
south wind across the area early this morning before a secondary
triple point low along the coast takes over abruptly cutting off
the south winds around midday. The triple point low will begin
to intensify late today over southern New Brunswick as a surge
of Arctic air begins to flow into the area on strong gusty NW
winds. Temperatures will plunge tonight and any water or slush
will freeze. Some snow showers will likely continue over the
north tonight in moisture wrapping around and down from the very
intense Maritimes low. The strong winds will bring blowing
snow, especially over the far north where additional snow
showers are likely and the old snow will not be as hardened from
rain.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Tuesday is shaping up to be one of the harshest days this winter. A
cold upper low evident on water vapor satellite pictures early this
morning across central Ontario is expected to cross Maine early
Tuesday morning. The low is expected to rapidly move out across the
Maritimes and to southern Newfoundland by Tuesday evening.  An
intense surface low in the Saint Lawrence Seaway will combine with
high pressure building to the south of the area to produce a very
tight pressure gradient across the area. The air mass will be about
as cold as we have seen this winter with temperatures likely to not
get out of the single digits in the Saint John Valley with teens
Downeast.

The combination of the strong pressure gradient/cold air advection,
higher sun angle/steep low level lapse rates will mean a harsh wind
of 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph, and perhaps even 55 mph across
the higher terrain. The combination of the wind and low temperatures
makes wind chills a concern, especially in the morning. Often there
is some difficulty in reaching warning level criteria wind chills
due usually to a lack of wind in a deep arctic air mass.  In this
case, the wind is not going to be lacking and the eventual wind
chills will be more a function of the actual air temperatures. It
looks reasonable that the current watches will need to be upgraded
to warnings, and that advisories could be required further south and
east of the watches, although based on the expected conditions it is
doubtful that advisory level wind chills would be observed across
our southern zones including Bangor.

A wind advisory will almost certainly be needed Tuesday, but the big
concern is across the far north, especially northern and central
Aroostook County where significant blowing and drifting snow is
likely with white-outs and difficult travel a concern. May need to
go with winter weather headlines in the far north with wind
advisories elsewhere. Main roads such as 1, 11, 161, will likely
have significant drifting into the southbound lanes. There remains
uncertainly on two fronts. The first, how much new snow falls in the
colder air that is drier/powdery tonight and Tuesday morning, and
second, can the wind break up the older snow and cause it to be
blown and drifted. This looks like a good set up that even the older
more dense snow is going to be able to be blown and drifted.

Wind and blowing and drifting snow likely to persist into Tuesday
evening across the north, especially open areas and high terrain.
The wind will settle down overnight. A weak surface low approaching
from the west will cause an increase in clouds and conditions will
not be ideal for radiational cooling.  The low weakens to a surface
trough Wednesday and is moisture starved.  The main impact will be
some clouds and a sharp rebound in temperatures to more seasonable
levels by Wednesday afternoon with highs well into the 20s north to
the mid to upper 30s Downeast.  A little light snow or flurries
could try to work into the western zones very late Tue night or Wed
morning, but any accumulations look minor, i.e. less than an
inch.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Although no signs of spring in the long term, overall it will not be
all that bad with no major storms on the horizon. New England is
expected to remain under the influence of an upper trough. A cold
front crosses the region Thursday bringing a colder air mass back
into the area, although not nearly as cold as Tuesday. Highs will
mostly be 5 to 10 degrees below average Thu-Sat with a bit of
moderation towards the end of the weekend. A few snow showers will
be possible, especially across the north and mountains each day Thu-
Sat, with less of a chance on Sunday. In any event, a fairly benign
stretch of weather.

.AVIATION /12Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
NEAR TERM:
Today: IFR. Improving to MVFR then VFR Downeast late today.
Possibly improving to MVFR over the north. Strong S winds this
morning becoming strong NW this afternoon. S wind shear this
morning.

Tonight: MVFR north, VFR Downeast, Strong gusty NW winds.

SHORT TERM: Tue & Tue night: The main issue will be strong NW wind of
20 to 35 knots with higher gusts. The wind will slowly ease Tue
night. Mainly VFR Downeast, and variable MVFR/VFR at the
Aroostook terminals with brief IFR in any snow showers. The
strong wind will likely produce significant blowing and drifting
snow across the runways from KPQI to KFVE along with very
turbulent conditions.

Wed through Fri: VFR at the Downeast terminals. VFR much of the time
at the northern terminals, with MVFR possible at times, especially
in any snow showers. A west wind around 10 knots Wed, NW increasing
10 to 20 knots with higher gusts Thu, and W wind around 10 knots

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM:
S winds reaching gale around mid morning then diminishing before
becoming NW and increasing to gale late today then storm
tonight. Turning sharply colder tonight with freezing spray late
tonight.

SHORT TERM: Storm warnings are in effect into Tuesday for
strong northwest wind. Conditions will slowly ease to gales by
Tuesday evening and to small craft advisory level wind by late
Tuesday night. SCA wind may continue into at least Wed morning
on the coastal waters, but the wind should diminish below SCA
levels on the intra-coastal waters by late Tue night. After a
short lull, another round of SCA level wind expected thu-Fri in
the wake of a cold front. Heavy freezing spray Tue morning.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A high astronomical tide around 12 PM on Monday combined with
a potential storm surge could generate a few areas of minor
splash over across low lying roadways.
