.DISCUSSION...
Today through Tonight...
Today is the day to get in any last minute outdoor activities
before a strong fall storm settles in for 3 to 4 days. Shortwave
ridging will bring sunny skies and warmer temperatures to the
region today. After receiving up to 2 inches of rain yesterday,
areas of fog have developed over SE Montana this morning and will
persist until around 10am before dissipating. Otherwise mostly
clear skies will let temperatures climb into the mid 60s with
breezy west to northwest winds this afternoon. By late in the day
the strong fall storm system that has been advertised over the
past week will begin to impact the western mountains with
increasing shower activity. By midnight tonight will see
precipitation dropping into the valleys and foothills, with a few
showers possibly making it as far east as Billings. Heavy snow
will get going in the mountains after midnight. In the early
morning hours snow levels will drop from 9000 feet down to valley
elevations by sunrise, with places like Livingston and Big Timber
mixing with or turning over to snow. Despite a change over to
snow, do not expect much if any snow accumulation below 5000 feet
tonight. Chambers
Monday through Saturday...
Southeastern Montana could see it's first chance of winter
beginning Monday. The second half of the week will dry and warm.
Monday through Wednesday: A strong cold front will move into the
area on Monday. Models continue to track a cutoff low that will
move from the 4 corners, north towards the Wyoming/ND border by
Tuesday night. Total QPF for Monday through Wednesday will range
from 0.50 inches near Harlowton to 1.25 inches in Billings to
above 2 inches in Sheridan. We continue to work on finding the
rain/snow line during the daytime hours as this will influence
snowfall totals. High temperatures have continued to trend lower
with most areas west of Rosebud County seeing temperatures in the
mid 30s rather than near 40. This could keep a lot of the
precipitation as snow rather than rain. A Winter Storm Watch
continues for many locations with the addition of Melville zone,
southern Rosebud County, and Powder River County. Generally, lower
elevation areas in the watch will see snow amounts of 4-8 inches
with localized heavier amounts, increasing to 8 to 14 inches
along the immediate foothills and 15 to 25 inches in the
mountains. Most accumulations in the lower elevations will be on
grassy surfaces due to the recent warm days we've had, but if the
snow falls hard enough, we could see some accumulation on the road
late in the event. We are continuing to monitor this system.
Winds will also be breezy with the strongest winds along the ND
border with gusts to 40 mph expected. With temperatures near 32
degrees, wet snow is expected so blowing snow is not a major
concern. Keep an eye on the weather for the start of your work
week.
Thursday through Saturday: Similar to today, weak ridging will
build back into the area with drying conditions and temperatures
warming back towards normal for this time of year.
High temperatures on Monday will be in the 40s in the west, and
low 50s in the east with the warmest temperatures of the day being
shortly after midnight. Tuesday will be the coolest day with mid
30s with areas from Custer and Powder River east warming into the
mid 40s. Wednesday and Thursday will be in the 40s. Friday and
Saturday will warm into the low 50s.
Overnight temperatures beginning Monday night will drop into the
20s in the west to mid 30s in the east, with most locations seeing
below 32 degrees for low temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday
night. Temperature for Tuesday onward could change based on the
amount of snow that falls.

.AVIATION...
Areas of morning fog will bring IFR to LIFR conditions to SE
Montana (KMLS, KBHK, K4BQ) through 16z. Otherwise VFR conditions
will prevail today. This evening will see a strong storm system
begin to impact western mountains and foothills with increasing
rain/snow shower activity. Flight conditions will diminish
overnight from west to east with MVFR/IFR conditions possible near
precipitation areas. Mountain obscuration will become predominant
after midnight. Chambers
