.UPDATE...
Visibility reductions due to blowing snow continue at Livingston,
though gusts are showing signs of decreasing as of 16z. Winds have
decreased significantly since early this morning at Big Timber and
Harlowton. Will let the winter weather advisory for blowing snow
continue for a bit longer (it expires at 21z).
Satellite imagery shows trof approaching from the NW, and surface
analysis indicates a cold front just north of our cwa (winds have
not yet shifted to the north at Judith Gap). Synoptic scale
ascent and another arctic frontal passage will bring increasing
chances of snow as the day wears on...initially across our north
and east of Billings, then sagging toward the foothills as the
cold air deepens. Periods of light snow will continue thru
tomorrow.
Have made some pop/wx and wind adjustments based on observed
trends. Expect a wind shift into Billings by 21z...and it should
be snowing lightly by the evening commute if not sooner.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Friday night...
Retreat of arctic air over the western zones and developing
leeside trough causing strong winds and blowing snow along the
western foothills. Web cams showing a far amount of blowing snow
and observations have been below a mile at times so will issue an
Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow from Judith Gap down to
Big Timber and over to Livingston. Will have the advisory end
later this afternoon as the next round of arctic air pushes back
into the area.
Development of the leeside trough facilitated by backing flow
aloft in response to a shortwave moving into WA this morning. As
this wave moves into Montana it begins phasing with a lobe of the
Polar Vortex which brings a period of troughiness over the area
with deepening arctic air. This sets up a prolonged period of
light snow over the area which will yield 1 to 2 inches of snow
over 24 hours with foothills seeing 3 to 4 inches and higher
mountains 6 to 8 inches. The return of cold air will yield high
temperatures in the single digits on Friday after many places
reach the 15 to 25 range today.
Snow tapers off Friday night with the next round of leeside
troughing starting with cold air retreat possibly starting in the
foothills near daybreak Saturday. borsum
Saturday through Thursday...
Upper ridging building in for Saturday and continuing over the
area through Monday, will produce strong lee troughing Sat. night
through Sunday. 700 mb winds will reach 50 kt by 12Z Sun., based
on the NAEFS and ECMWF Ensemble Tables. The lee trough will have
a pressure gradient in excess of 20 mb, supporting strong gap
flow. Local guidance also supports very strong winds. Have
increased wind speeds in KLVM/Nye, K6S0 and K3HT to Warning
criteria from 09Z-18Z Sunday. Also based on 850 mb ensemble data,
increased wind speeds on the plains E to KBIL late Sat. night into
Sunday. Blowing snow will be a concern Sat. through at least Sun.
morning as temps will not cause any snowpack to crust over yet.
Continued the mention of at least areas of blowing snow in the
grids. Temps will be from the single digits E to the 20s W on
Saturday, then will climb into the 30s for Sun. and Mon. with good
agreement in the clusters.
Clusters showed zonal or SW flow aloft for Tue, then cluster
spread increased on Wednesday with the cluster mean showing flat
NW flow. NBM increases chances for snow from W to E across the
area beginning Mon. night and continuing through Tue. night.
Deterministic models had a strong cold front pushing S through the
area in this timeframe with QPF and frontal timing differences.
Chances for snow continued on Wednesday. For Thursday, GEFS and
ECMWF Ensemble Mean had NW flow to slight ridging over the area.
NBM continued snow chances over the region. NBM brought high temps
back into the single digits for Wednesday. Thus, looking at
another possible snow and cold scenario for later next week, but
will need to watch how situation evolves with time. Arthur

Visibility reductions in blowing snow will continue at KLVM this
morning, then gradually end by 19-21z as SW winds decrease.
Flight conditions will deteriorate across the area from N to S
this afternoon and tonight, with MVFR/IFR in snow, especially west
of KMLS. Mountains will be obscured. Winds will shift to the N-E
behind a cold front late this afternoon and evening.
