.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure building across the Lower Great Lakes will provide dry
weather through Monday. Low pressure will pass just to the south of
the area Tuesday and Tuesday night, bringing widespread snow to most
of the region south of Lake Ontario with relatively minor accumulations.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
High pressure will move over the region through Monday. At least
partial clearing in combination with light winds and high pressure
overhead will give the opportunity for temperatures to drop rapidly
once again east of Lake Ontario where lows will likely fall well
below zero for a second night in a row inland from the lakeshore.
Otherwise, low temperatures will range through the teens south of
Lake Ontario. Clouds will then spread back across the region by
Monday afternoon as the next system approaches. Highs will range
through the 20s east of Lake Ontario, with mainly low 30s elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The main focus through the short term period will revolve around a
relatively minor snow event late Monday night through Tuesday night.
A well defined mid level wave will cross Iowa Monday night, then
open up and de-amplify with time as it reaches the eastern Great
Lakes by late Tuesday. At the surface low pressure will move into
the Ohio Valley Monday night before moving along the NY/PA border
Tuesday. The entire system surface and aloft will be weakening with
time as it moves east towards our area.

The snow in this system will come in several different batches, as
is often the case with synoptic systems. An initial wing of warm
advection and isentropic upglide will reach the western Southern
Tier by late Monday night, then spread into the Buffalo and
Rochester areas by, or shortly after daybreak Tuesday, finally
reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region in the afternoon. The
steadiest snow and best accumulations will focus with this initial
period of snow. Later Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night some
light snow will linger, with a minor uptick in coverage overnight
Tuesday night as weak DPVA crosses the eastern Great Lakes with the
mid level wave, and northeast flow off Lake Ontario provides a
little added moisture.

Snowfall with this system continues to look minor, with 2-4 inches
total expected in most locations. The area that is most likely to be
in the higher end of that range is from the Genesee Valley to
western Finger Lakes where forcing and moisture look to maximize.
Main change with this forecast cycle was to bring POPS and
measurable snow a little farther north across the eastern Lake
Ontario region given the farther north trend in model guidance.
Precipitation type will be all snow for most of the area. The GFS
and GEM bring a minor warm layer aloft into the western Southern
Tier Tuesday, while the NAM keeps the column colder. Given the model
uncertainty, stayed close to continuity with a chance of sleet
mixing in across the Southern Tier.

The system will exit off the east coast Wednesday morning. Lingering
moisture and northerly upslope flow may still produce a few light
snow showers south of Lake Ontario in the morning, but this should
end in the afternoon.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Wednesday night and Thursday a strong mid level trough will move
from the Ohio Valley to the Mid Atlantic, forcing a rapidly
deepening coastal low to develop offshore of the southern Mid
Atlantic coast. This system will not come close to our area, but
will combine with high pressure building into the western Great
Lakes to bring increasing northerly flow across the eastern Great
Lakes. The cold airmass is fairly dry and shallow, but may be enough
to produce a few light lake effect snow showers south of Lake
Ontario later Wednesday night through Thursday. Any accumulations
will be minor if this materializes.

A sharp mid level trough is forecast to move southeast across
Ontario and Quebec Thursday night, reaching New England Friday.
Model guidance has trended stronger with this trough over the last
24 hours, and also notably colder aloft. This will bring a push of
well below normal temperatures to close the week. The associated
arctic front may produce a few snow showers Thursday night and early
Friday, with lake effect snow showers increasing southeast of the
lakes as well. Lake effect snow showers may linger into Friday night

Great Lakes.

Model guidance begins to diverge with the timing of the next system
by Sunday. A mid level trough will reach the central US by Saturday
night, then move towards the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes
Sunday. The 12Z GFS/GEM have remained fairly consistent with the
timing of this system, with precipitation chances increasing from
west to east Sunday. The arrival of warmer air ahead of the system
would introduce a chance of mixed precipitation as well if these
solutions verify. The 12Z ECMWF trended notably slower, with
precipitation not arriving until later Sunday night or Monday. The
slower ECWMF solution is then more aggressive with a secondary
coastal low Monday, resulting in a colder and snowier solution for
Monday. Given the model uncertainty, kept POPS in the chance range
for Sunday with a rain/snow mix across the lower elevations of
Western NY and snow elsewhere.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Dry weather with widespread VFR conditions are expected overnight
through Monday evening. Low clouds will erode overnight creating
mostly clear conditions many locations. Mid-high clouds
will move into the region Monday. Winds will remain variable through
Monday afternoon. A northeast wind will start to increase across
western NY Monday evening.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Snow developing with IFR, especially south of Lake
Ontario.
Wednesday...Scattered snow showers with local IFR and MVFR CIGS
in the morning, improving to VFR.
Thursday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of snow showers.
Friday...MVFR/IFR with a chance of snow showers.

High pressure will build across the lakes overnight and into
Monday.

Low pressure will then move from the Ohio Valley Monday night
eastward across Pennsylvania Tuesday and Tuesday night, with high
pressure remaining to the north of the Great Lakes. This will allow
for a period of stronger ENE winds on Lakes Erie and Ontario with
another round of Small Craft Advisory conditions possible.
