Area forecast discussion, Aug 9, 1:20 PM EDT, 2 hours 2 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
120 PM EDT Mon Aug 9 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift across the region early this morning,
allowing hot and humid air to rebuild into the region for the rest
of this week. Mainly dry conditions are expected on today and
Tuesday with better thunderstorm chances from midweek onward. The
best chance of widespread showers and thunderstorms will be Friday
and Friday night as a cold front will push across the region. This
front will finally bring relief from the heat and humidity, making
for a nice weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 916 AM EDT Monday...Forecast remains in good shape as of
mid morning. Only notable adjustment was to increase cloud cover
across northern NY through the morning hours based off current
satellite imagery and modelled 700-500 RH progs. Have a great
day!

Previous discussion...The main emphasis for the near term will
be very warm and humid conditions which will persist through
much of the week. A warm front will push into Canada early this
morning, spreading a very warm and muggy airmass into the North
Country. Temperatures today will top out in the mid and upper
80s, with some locations in the St Lawrence and Champlain
Valleys approaching 90. Tuesday will be even warmer with most
spots in the mid 80s to lower 90s. Meanwhile, dewpoints will
remain in the mid 60s to close to 70, making for heat index
values in the mid 80s to lower 90s today, and the mid 80s to mid
90s tomorrow. The warm temperatures and high dewpoints will
also result in increasing instability; CAPE values will be
500-1000 J/kg each day. This may be enough to allow a few
showers and thunderstorms to pop up over the higher terrain this
afternoon, though without any upper support, coverage and
intensity will be quite limited. Tuesday, a weak upper shortwave
will approach the St Lawrence Valley from the Great Lakes
region late in the day, so chances for showers/thunderstorms
will be a little better than today, though still anticipate
scattered coverage at best. Regardless, given PWATs will once
again be in the 1.50-1.75 inch range, any convection will be
capable of producing heavy downpours. What showers/thunderstorms
do develop today will wane this evening as we lose heating, but
there won't be any relief from the humidity; it'll be a muggy
night with lows remaining in the 60s to around 70.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 325 AM EDT Monday...As mentioned yesterday...a shortwave in the
Great Lakes will largely lift ENE across Ontario/Quebec with the
best forcing and an associated weak surface trof drifts east with
waning instability due to loss of heating thus a few remaining
showers diminishing during the night across northern NY.

This trof lies across CWA on Wed along with PWATS 1.5-2 inches and
NAM12 CAPE values 1500-2500. Model soundings show a marginal cap and
with no real forcing other than surface heating it looks like a lot
of wasted cape and rich PWATS. Isold SHRA/TSRA likely terrain
driven, otherwise just continued Hazy, Hot and Humid with 925mb
temps 23-26C with some indications up to 27-28C. I'll play it
conservative with L90s but can't rule out some M90s.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 325 AM EDT Monday...Weak shortwave in W flow moves through Wed
night with decreasing instability due to loss of daytime heating YET
still some octane to this atmosphere. Can't rule out an isold
shra/tsra esp northern NY.

Again, mentioned yesterday broad W flow across Canadian border due
to elongated W-E heat ridge across lower half of CONUS and cold,
winterlike strong upper low in Hudson Bay.

On Thursday...strengthening WSW flow parallel to boundary just E of
FA and the main cold front across Quebec/Ontario/Great Lakes.
Therefore not much change in the airmass, 925mb temps 22-26C
(warmest across VT) with PWATS 1.5-2 inches. A pre-fntl trof and
weak embedded shortwave approaches/moves through in the aftn for sct
thunderstorms. Friday will feature the cold upper low shifting east
across Hudson Bay with rotating shortwave digging SSE across
Ontario/Great Lakes/Quebec and eventually into our FA Friday
afternoon. Strong dynamics and developing jet structure that this
could be an active day. 925mb temps cooler, ranging from 20C in St.
Lawrence VLY but still 25C in eastern VT and even with more clouds
still L90s there.

Medium range models consistent that strong >110 kt dual core 250mb
jet and all strongest mid-level flow across Ontario/Quebec parallel
to slow moving surface front across VT where PWATS of 1.5-1.75 inch
riding along it and GFS/ECMWF still showing potential weak wave(s)
developing along this front for Friday evening/ngt. Still
early, but many features coming together for training storms and
good synoptic lift for potential flood threat...esp VT
eastward.

By the weekend...AWE! Yes, Mother Nature's AC arrives with
seasonable temperatures and refreshing dewpoints.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 18Z Tuesday...A mix of VFR/MVFR over the forecast
period. VFR in order through 04Z with scattered high clouds,
mixed with some scattered cigs in the 035-045 AGL range at
KMPV/KEFK/KRUT. Winds mainly south 6-12 kt through 00Z, abating
somewhat overnight. Can't completely rule out an isolated shower
or storm through 01Z, but paucity of coverage warrants no
mention in the forecasts at this point. After 04Z maritime
stratus likely to push west into eastern VT, affecting mainly
KMPV/KRUT. Some IFR in BR/FG possible early at KMPV before
stratus arrives, with visibilities thereafter mainly 3-5sm.
Elsewhere, VFR continues. After 12Z Tuesday, lower stratus
gradually lifts at KMPV/KRUT where a trend to VFR shown, with
other terminals remaining VFR with just scattered mid/high
clouds. Winds generally remain southerly in the 5-10kt range.

Outlook...

Tuesday Night: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Wednesday: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Wednesday Night: VFR. Chance TSRA, Slight chance SHRA.
Thursday: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Thursday Night: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Friday: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Friday Night: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance TSRA.
Saturday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Slight chance
SHRA.
