.SYNOPSIS...
A surge of arctic air will bring the coldest temperatures of the
season by Friday morning with widespread sub-zero wind chill values.
A period of heavy ocean-enhanced snow showers could impact parts of
the Cape and Nantucket Friday afternoon and evening. Dry, but
chilly conditions over the weekend. Wind chill values fall into
the single digits during the day and below zero overnight.
High pressure brings fair dry weather Sunday. A developing
winter storm may affect Southern New England Monday and Tuesday.
Drier weather returns for Wednesday and Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
120 AM Update...

Wind chill values have dipped into the negative single digits
across much of interior MA and CT, where a wind chill advisory
is in effect till noon. With low-level winds turning NW,
scattered ocean-effect snow showers are now confined to the
Outer Cape, with the remainder of the CWA staying dry. The
forecast overnight lows still look on track, mostly in the
single digits and low teens, with some single digit subzero lows
along portions of the east slopes of the Berkshires. Over much
of the interior, wind chills are forecast to dip into the -15 to
near -25F range around daybreak.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

During this evening/tonight the storm passing well southeast of our
region pushes further offshore, while strong cold high pressure
builds eastward into the western Great Lakes Region. Tight pressure
gradient over our area will bring blustery northwest winds to our
area while temperatures plummet. Anticipating overnight lows in the
single digits and low teens, with some single digit subzero lows
along portions of the east slopes of the Berkshires. Over much of
the interior, wind chills are forecast to dip into the -15 to near -
25 deg F range, lasting into Friday morning. Thus the Wind Chill
Advisory remains in effect for the interior. Across eastern MA and
the Cape/Islands, wind chills dip to -5 to approaching -15 degrees,
not quite advisory levels but still bitterly cold.

Anticipating NW winds 10 to 20 mph tonight with gusts as high as 25
to 30 mph, except higher gusts 30 to 35 mph on the Cape/Islands and
Block Island.

For most of the area, tonight will be dry. Radar at 4 pm showed
flurries moving out of northeast MA and the BOS-PVD area, while snow
showers along Southeast MA were heading towards the Cape. This
trend will continue over the next few hours. With the strong
cold air advection and H925 winds from the north during the
evening, expecting scattered ocean effect snow showers to then
continue over the Cape/Islands and potentially south coastal MA
through midnight. After midnight as the low level flow becomes
more solidly NW, ocean effect snow showers should retreat to the
outer Cape.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
* Winter Storm Watch issued for Cape Cod and Nantucket *
* Period of near blizzard conditions possible on the Outer Cape and
  Nantucket during Friday afternoon and early evening*
* Wind Chill Advisory continues for the interior through mid morning
  Friday *

The biggest forecast challenge for Friday is the potential for
intense ocean enhanced snow showers over the Cape and Islands, in
particular the outer Cape and Nantucket. The ocean temperatures are
in the upper 30s to low 40s, and the very cold air above the surface
enables steep low level lapse rates. The one limiting factor through
the morning is the forecast wind direction, from the NW, limits the
trajectory over the waters and onto the Cape/Islands.

However, during Friday afternoon models are showing a sharp inverted
trough sweeping down the Maine shoreline, into east coastal MA and
especially the Cape/Islands. The wind trajectory becomes stronger
and becomes NNW to N, at 40-50 kts over the Cape and Nantucket. As
this happens, we could have a period of intense ocean-enhanced snow
showers. The most intense precipitation is expected to be just
offshore, but for the Cape and Nantucket we see the potential for up
to 6 inches of snowfall, which may happen within a few hours' time.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Cape and Nantucket for
Friday afternoon and early evening, with the highest risk being over
the mid-outer Cape. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph could occur concurrently
with the snowfall, with periods of near blizzard conditions
possible. Noting that there is uncertainty with this forecast-
the heavier banding could be offshore. Please stay tuned for
updates.

Looking elsewhere in SNE, scattered snow showers from this inverted
trough could reach into east coastal MA and also Martha's Vineyard,
where we have chance/slight chance pops. However any accumulation
there is expected to be light, less than an inch. Over the interior,
expecting partly to mostly sunny skies, quite a difference from east
coastal MA.

Friday will bring a continuation of blustery NW winds and bitterly
cold wind chills, as low as -15 to near -25 across the interior.
Thus the Wind Chill Advisory continues through mid morning.
Temperatures are not expected to climb much, with highs ranging from
the single digits above zero in the east slopes of the Berkshires,
to the teens and low 20s for most of the area, and 20s Cape Cod
and the Islands.

Friday Night...

Dry and very cold inland. Strong winds and 17-19C temp difference
over water suggest continued ocean-effect snow showers over Cape Cod
into the evening with some additional snowfall accumulation, though
the return of a NW wind trajectory should eventually limit the snow
showers to the outer Cape. Northwest winds will diminish as the
pressure gradient diminishes a little. Low level airmass temps
suggest min temps zero to 5 below along the east slopes of the
Berkshires, single digits above zero for much of the region, and 10
to 15 on the Cape/Islands and some other shoreline communities.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Big Picture...

Upper low over the Gulf of Maine will slide east out to sea Saturday
night and Sunday. Weak upper ridge moves over Srn New England Sunday
and Sunday night. Shortwave ejects from Srn California tonight to
the Midwest Sunday, then develops a coastal surface low along the
Carolinas Sunday night. This low pressure slowly moves up the coast,
passing Srn New England Tuesday. Another weak ridge then moves over
the region Thursday.

Temperatures will be colder than normal over the weekend, trending
to near normal during next week.

Mass fields associated with the Mon-Tue weather system are
converging on similar solutions that would bring snow and some
coastal rain during that period. Forecast confidence is high through
Sunday, moderate Monday-Tuesday, and low-moderate Wednesday-Thursday.

Details...

Saturday night and Sunday...

High pressure over Quebec extends south over New England. This
should provide fair weather and light wind. Cross-sections show
increasing high-level clouds, mostly during Sunday afternoon. Expect
radiational cooling Saturday night with dew points -5F to +6F, so
overnight min temps should be in the single numbers and a little
below zero in some cold spots. Shallow mixing Sunday will tap temps
equiv to -15C to -19C at 850-mb...supporting max surface temps
in the mid 20s to around 30.

Increasing east winds will bring increasing sky cover Sunday night.
Upper ridge remains over or just west of Srn New England through
midnight, then shifts east. Expect dry weather most of the night,
with a low chance of precip along the South Coast of the 3-states
toward morning. The GFS positions the surface coastal low east of
Norfolk VA at 12Z, farther south than previous runs, which supports
the delay of precip onset.

Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday...

GFS/GGEM/ECMWF have come into line, sort of, and show a vertically
stacked system off the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday that shift
northeast near 40N/70W Tuesday and to Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank
Tuesday night. In addition to the earlier remarks on the Sun night
forecast, note that cross sections show dry air at 850-mb at HFD-PVD-
ACK. This may slow the northward expansion of precip across the area
Monday and is in line with the slower solutions of past days. Expect
most of this precip expansion to be Monday afternoon/early
Monday night. Precip continues Monday night and Tuesday. Best
lift from Eastern CT through RI and Eastern MA. One source
favors Ern CT through Boston Metro West, the other favors RI and
SE MA. Will monitor as this solution evolves. P-types will be
predominantly snow, but warming along the coast may allow a mix
or change to rain in that area.

Low level east jet, around 925 mb, moves north across the
region Monday night and Tuesday, before sweeping east Tuesday
night. Speeds of 50-60 kt forecast in this jet, suggesting gust
potential 35-40 kt/40-45 mph.

Upper trough just to our east Wednesday morning, pulling away during
the day. Scattered snow showers remain possible in the morning, but
should move off to the east with the upper low during the afternoon.

Thursday...

High pressure builds in on Thursday bringing fair weather and
seasonable temperatures.

Forecaster Confidence Levels.

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Rest of tonight...

VFR for most of the area with NW winds 10-20 kts gusting to 25-30
kt, except for localized MVFR to low VFR over the Cape
terminals with light ocean effect snow showers lingering over
the Outer Cape.

Friday and Friday Night...

For most of the area, VFR conditions with NW winds 15 to 20 kt,
gusting 25-30 kt then diminishing Friday night.

However the Cape terminals could see a period of heavy ocean
enhanced snow showers for Fri afternoon and evening. The exact
placement of any heavy snow showers is uncertain, however the Outer
Cape looks to be the most likely location. Conditions could
deteriorate to LIFR or even VLIFR conditions with near-zero
visibility in the most intense snow bands. NNW winds may gust to 40-
50 mph during the snowfall.

Snow showers on the Cape/Islands retreat to the outer Cape and
Nantucket during the evening, diminishing in coverage and intensity.
However MVFR CIGs linger overnight.

Tonight through Friday Night...

A strengthening pressure gradient will result in gusty northwest
winds over the coastal waters. As a result, Gale Warnings continue
for all waters from late tonight through Friday night, with NW winds
gusting to 30-40 kts.

Additionally, a surge of cold arctic air in from the north will work
in tandem with the gusty winds to create moderate to locally heavy
freezing spray conditions. With this forecast package, upgraded to a
Freezing Spray Warning for most waters from late tonight through
Friday afternoon, and a Freezing Spray Advisory for the same
timeframe along Boston Harbor and Narragansett Bay.

Scattered ocean effect snow showers are expected to intensify Friday
afternoon and evening along the eastern coastal waters, Cape Cod Bay
and Nantucket Sound. These areas could see sharply reduced
visibility due to heavy snowfall, accompanied by gusts of 40 to 45
kts.
