.SYNOPSIS...
Active weather continues much of the work week. One weather
system passes offshore on Monday, bringing a light wintry mix.
A more substantial system moves up from the Gulf of Mexico and
crosses New England late Monday into Tuesday with the potential
for significant ice accretion across much of the interior. High
pressure brings dry and cold weather Wednesday before another
winter storm arrives Thursday into Friday with snow
transitioning to ice and rain. Dry but cold conditions return
this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1015 PM Update:

Other than across northern Worcester County into the Merrimack
Valley where enough cloud breaks have permitted temperatures to
fall into the mid 20s, more OVC skies elsewhere have resulted
in current temps in the low to mid 30s, with upper-30s out
across Cape Cod. These are outpacing hourly forecast
expectations by several degrees; tried to side toward the
warmer end of temperature guidance (largely GLAMP) to get these
more in line for the remainder of the overnight.

Looking at mainly dry conditions for most for tonight, though
the South Coast and across Cape Cod may again be dealing with
another late-overnight (after 2 AM) very light precip stemming
from moisture now seen in radar imagery near the Delmarva
Peninsula. There is some variance in the CAM guidance and the
00z NAM in terms of how far north and west any precip may
extend, and as confirmed in 00z OKX RAOB and model soundings
suggest a lack of in-cloud icing. Given that temps in this area
may hover around 32-34 degrees, a mix of re-frozen ice pellets
and rain look to be the governing precip types, with cold rain
across the Cape; however drizzle or patchy freezing drizzle
could enter into the equation given the lack of ice nuclei.
Spotty nature to precip and expected minimal impact should
mitigate need for statements attm but will continue to monitor.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Monday...

Light precipitation moves into south coastal areas early morning and
spreads over the region. Some uncertainty as to how far north it
reaches, but the track well offshore suggests areas south of the
Mass Pike. Melted amounts will be light, less than one-tenth inch.
Precip type will be trickier, with snow mixing with sleet during the
morning, rain mixed with snow along the coast, and pockets of
freezing rain possible in between. Model soundings show drying at
the ice nucleation level, which would diminish deep precipitation.
But the prevailing northeast flow may bring some light drizzle or
freezing drizzle from lower levels of the airmass after the other
precip moves off.

Ice amounts are projected to be at or near zero...for now we will
hold off on any winter headlines. Temperatures will be influenced by
how much precipitation does fall. Expect max sfc temps in the upper
20s and low 30s inland, and 30s along the coast.

Monday night...

Moisture cross sections continue to show near-saturation up to 700-
mb, so expect clouds through the night. East to northeast surface
winds may support light drizzle or freezing drizzle early in the
night.

A more significant weather system moves out of the Western Gulf of
Mexico Monday and up the East Coast Monday night. Projected surface
pressure patterns on both the GFS and ECMWF show a cold air dam
signal extending from Maine into interior Srn New England. This
should hold cold air over the region as the precipitation shield
extends northeast ahead of the advancing weather system.

As for that precip shield, models agree on bringing it into Western
areas after 06Z/1 AM and quickly spreading it across all areas
overnight. Initially it could be snow, but southwest winds aloft
will bring above-freezing temperatures above the surface. Temps of
around +3C are advected over the region at 850-mb to 900-mb, with
the cold dam maintaining below-freezing temps closer to the surface.
Based on sounding forecasts, we anticipate some initial snow/sleet
mix, but a quick change to sleet and freezing rain in the interior.
Southeast of I-95, where the cold air is not held and temperatures
remain above freezing, expect mainly rain.

Freezing precipitation... based on current model data, we anticipate
0.15 to 0.25 inches of freezing rain from Hartford County CT through
Western and Central MA Monday night, with additional amounts on
Tuesday. We have issued a Winter storm Watch for interior sections
because forecast amounts have potential to trend higher. The Watch
will be converted to either a Warning or an Advisory when we get
closer to the event.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

* Dry and cold Wed
* Another winter storm brings accumulating snow Thu which likely
  transitions to ice then rain Thu night into Fri
* Blustery and cold next weekend but dry

Tuesday night and Wednesday...

Storm moves into the Maritimes Tue night followed by blustery and
colder conditions into Wed, but winds should be diminishing in the
afternoon as high pres builds in from the west. Skies clearing Tue
night with lots of sunshine Wed. Lows teens to lower 20s Tue night
with highs mid 20s to lower 30s Wed which is several degrees below
normal.

Thursday into Friday...

Another southern stream shortwave ejects NE from central CONUS
trough with primary low moving up through the Ohio Valley and Gt
Lakes and secondary low tracking toward SNE. Strong high pres to the
N will result in a much colder antecedent airmass in SNE as moisture
begins to move into the region which will ensure precip starts as
snow everywhere in SNE on Thu. Potential for decent front end thump
of snow before any changeover with accumulations likely as the nose
of the mid level jet moves up from the south, overrunning cold air
at the surface. However, it is too soon to get into specific
amounts. There are timing differences with onset of snow but even
slower guidance indicates snow will overspread the region from SW to
NE during the afternoon and it is looking increasingly likely that
the evening commute will be impacted.

The track of the coastal low will be critical in determining how far
north and how quickly snow/ice/rain line moves north across SNE Thu
night into Fri and how much ice accretion could occur. These details
are unknown at this time but it does appear a transition to ice/rain
will occur given 850 mb low track north and west of SNE. What is
uncertain is how far N this progresses and if temps in the interior
remain below freezing through the event with appreciable ice on top
of the snow. It does appear heaviest precip will be moving out
during Fri as storm exits to the NE.

Saturday and Sunday...

Blustery and cold conditions expected with temps several degrees
below normal. Dry weather.

.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels.

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06Z TAF Update:

Rest of the Overnight (thru 12z Mon): High confidence.

VFR, beginning to deteriorate to MVFR ceilings across eastern
and southern airports. Should stay dry, though areas from PVD
and the Cape Cod/ACK airports may see light wintry mix or RA
(mainly PL/RA away from the Cape, to RA across Cape
Cod/Islands). Timing mainly 08-12z. Any precip would be spotty
with VFR visbys. Light N winds.

Today: High confidence thru 16z, then trends moderate.

Deterioration to MVFR/IFR ceilings, with IFR ceilings mainly
after 18z. Timing deterioration to IFR is still somewhat less
clear. May still be dealing with light precip PVD and
Cape/Islands thru 16z but any precip would continue to be
spotty. Another area with potential for spotty precip (mainly
light snow, perhaps snow/PL mix) north and west of BAF-ORH-BVY
18-22z. Runways should be mainly dry. N-NE winds 3-6 kt, near
8-10 kt for the Islands.

Tonight: Moderate confidence.

IFR/LIFR due to ceilings, MVFR visbys in PL/FZRA to RA. Start
time of steadiest precip mainly 03-06z, with greatest accretion
of icing expected to be focused in the interior and higher
terrain after 06z. Onshore flow will transition eastern and
southern airports over to rain the soonest, taking a slower time
for that transition from FZRA to RA north and west of
I-95/I-495. Other than Cape Cod/ACK, most airports stand to get
at least a trace to a couple hundreths of icing, up to a
quarter-inch at ORH and towards BAF.

NE-E winds around 6-10 kt; a strong southerly LLJ 40 to 50 kts
is progged over SE MA and RI by daybreak which will likely
result in low-level shear for those airports.

Tuesday: Moderate confidence.

IFR/LIFR ceilings continue, though will transition to VFR/MVFR
post-frontal. Any lingering FZRA in the interior early Tues
transitions to RA except for the higher terrain. Brief period of
moderate to perhaps locally heavy rains for a time 13-16z for
the coastal plain before the cold front clears any leftover
precip around 16-20z west to east. Timing clearing remains
somewhat uncertain but improving conditions should be the trend
for second half of Tues.

Winds will trend SE to S in the AM before the front, then become
WNW and increasingly gusty (up to 25 kt) thru afternoon in the
post- frontal clearing.

North to northeast winds 10 to 15 kt tonight and Monday,
increasing to 20 kt during Monday night. Seas 5 feet on the
southern outer waters tonight, otherwise 4 feet or less through
Monday night. Small Craft Advisory continues for seas on the
southern outer waters tonight and Monday morning.

An area of light rain moves through on Monday, with vsbys
occasionally around 3 miles. A second area of rain moves up
from the south Monday night, bringing vsbys of 1 to 3 miles.
