.SYNOPSIS...
The rain and winds will quickly diminish this evening as a front
moves through. Saturday will start with fine weather, however
another fast moving cold front will quickly push through
southern New England late in the day. Brief showers and perhaps
an isolated thunderstorm will accompany the front. As the front
passes, a period of strong gusty winds will develop as colder
air moves in. Sunday will feature dry and seasonable weather.
Another area of low pressure moves up the coast Sunday night and
Monday, bringing more showers and possibly some snow in the
higher terrain. Cooler air arrives, especially for Monday and
Tuesday, followed by warming Wednesday and Thursday. Another
cold front brings a few showers Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
415 pm update...
Another one of those fast moving semi-wild storm systems that
southern New England is famous for in the fall is just a few
hours from coming to an end. As I type, the back edge of the
rain is along a line from Fitchburg MA to Westerly RI and making
good progress east. Expect the precipitation to move east of
Cape Cod between 10pm and midnight. Expecting generally clear
skies much of the night for western areas, and after midnight
across the east. Could be some patchy fog that develops as winds
will be on the light side. Went with NBM for overnight lows, so
lots of low-mid 30s, with lower 40s across the Cape where it
will be last to clear out.
Had some areas that received a decent amount of rain, on the
order of 1.5" in less than 2 hours. One of those areas was
across central RI into the Providence area. Based on output
from FLASH, we did issue a flood warning in the area given the
urban nature and still some rain to fall.
The strong southerly winds funneled up Narragansett Bay and
helped to push a surge to the top of the bay. The tide gauge at
Fox Point briefly touched flood stage at high tide a little
earlier this afternoon. Water levels will be receding as winds
quickly subside the next few hours.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
415 pm update...
Saturday starts out pretty quiet, but a vigorous upper trof will
be approaching the region in the afternoon and take on a
negative tilt as it moves into western New England. This should
induce some sort of surface low development on top of us late in
the day. Still some differences between models, but leaning
toward the stronger solutions as shown in the GFS and Canadian
versus the NAM. As cyclogenesis gets going, we'll have another
robust lower/mid level jet develop. Surface winds will flip to
the southeast and could become gusty along the east coast and
Cape by late afternoon. We will also be dealing with colder air
coming in aloft, which will generate instability. Per BUFKIT
forecast soundings, it looks like most instability will be
aloft. Expecting a narrow line of showers to develop ahead of
the cold front. Marginal if the convection can get deep enough
to have a thunderstorm. Don't have it in the forecast right now,
but wouldn't be surprised for a rumble or two. Even without
thunder, it's quite likely the heavier showers will also produce
small hail. Not out of the question that as the cold air moves
in on the back edge of the front, it could briefly end as a
little bit of snow at elevations above 1800 ft in the
Berkshires. Not expecting any accumulation.
But it will be the winds that we will need to keep close tabs
on. As mentioned above, forecast soundings show SE winds getting
a little gusty in the afternoon along the coast, but it's the
post frontal wind potential that will be more widespread.
Temperatures are expected to rapidly fall right behind the
front, which will allow good mixing. The GFS also has a pretty
strong pressure fall/rise couplet (+10mb/6hr) moving across SNE
after 00z. With 40kt+ winds expected a few thousand feet above
ground, the question is how deep the mixing will be. At this
point think we will get high enough to see at least 30mph gusts
over land. Over the ocean, where water temperatures are warmer,
we should be able to see easily 40mph+ gusts...so that will be
an issue for the marine community.
Strongest winds will be prior to midnight, but it will remain
breezy for much of the night. Temperatures will bottom out in
the upper 20s across the high terrain to lower 30s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Big Picture...
Multiple shortwaves move through the northern jet stream during the
coming week. So expect more activity than in the past week. One
shortwave sweeps across the Northeast Sunday night and Monday.
Another shortwave moves through late Thursday, although timing may
shift a little.
Upper contour heights vary from above normal to below normal through
the week. Expect cooler than normal temperatures Monday in the west
and Tuesday all areas, then trending to above normal Thursday, then
normal Friday.

Sunday...
Upper ridge moves over the region Sunday, providing enough
subsidence for a pleasant day. The next shortwave trough and surface
low cross the Great Lakes during the day and move east. Expect
increasing sky cover during the afternoon/evening. Mixing reaches to
900-mb, with temps of minus 1 at that level supporting max temps in
the upper 40s and lower 50s, possibly a couple degrees milder on the
Cape and Islands. West winds will gust 25-30 mph early, but
expect diminishing winds as the ridge crests, which will
diminish the pressure gradient.
Sunday night-Monday...
Upper trough moves east, crossing New England late Monday.
Supporting upper jet of 140-kt shifts over the coast, with the right-
entrance region in place around midnight. Models show a coastal
secondary sfc low forming overnight and racing past the Cape/Islands
around 12Z Monday. Good lift should generate a period of
rain/showers overnight and Monday. Cold air advection aloft may turn
the precip over to snow over Western MA, but temperatures near the
ground should be warm enough to limit any accumulations to less than
an inch. Precipitation tapers off around midday as the coastal
low moves off to the northeast. Could be a few lingering
rain/snow showers inland as the upper trough moves overhead.
Temperatures cool into the 30s and low 40s at night, then climb
into the 40s and lower 50s Monday.
Tuesday-Wednesday...
Another ridge builds over the region Tuesday, then shifts east
Wednesday. Expect clearing skies early morning Tuesday, then fair
weather Tuesday and Wednesday. Temps aloft are at their coldest
Tuesday, with a minus 2C to minus 3C at 925-mb, but then warm up
again Wednesday to 6-8C. Expect highs in the 40s Tuesday and mainly
in the 50s Wednesday.
Thursday-Friday...
Low pressure stays in Canada and passes well to our north. Rotation
around the low will swing a cold front through our area Tuesday
afternoon and night. Could be some showers with this one, but most
of the jet dynamics moves across Nrn New England and Canada, so
support will be meager. Also, this is in Day 6/Day 7, so timing of
the front may change over the next few days. Milder Thursday, then
fair weather Friday. Cold air advection behind the front will drop
Friday temperatures about 10F from Thursday highs.

.AVIATION /21Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.
18z Update...
Overall moderate confidence.
Primarily MVFR to IFR across the region at this time. Watching a
line of heavy showers working into the CT River Valley at this
time. Extrapolation puts it into eastern sections about in the
20-22z timeframe. Tried my best to time it in the TAFs, but
there is still a +/- 1hr error bar. Based on upstream obs, with
the passage of the line, winds do turn from SSE to SW/WSW.
Expect a brief gust of 35-40kt with the line. Still pretty
strong winds at 2000ft and above, on the order of 50 to 60kts.
As a result, have included LLWS in many of the TAFs. That wind
shear will rapidly diminish as the line passes to the east.
As the front moves east of a location, rain will end within 3 to
4 hours, with remaining IFR/MVFR conditions transitioning to VFR
a couple of hours later. Thus expecting primarily VFR conditions
area wide after 04z this evening and lasting into the day
Saturday. Winds will be light west/southwest overnight, but will
transition to SE on Saturday. Should become a bit gusty after
18z (25kt+) especially across eastern areas. Although it's
beyond the bulk of the TAF period, could be another strong
frontal passage Saturday evening with a period of strong winds
Saturday evening. Later forecasts will pin those details down.
KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence. Have removed any mention of
thunder, though a brief period of +SHRA and low visibilities
will accompany the frontal passage between 20-22z
KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence. Very small chance for
thunder thru 20z. Following frontal passage, improving
conditions will develop after 21z.

Will keep Gale Warnings going into early/mid evening, but once
the front moves east of the area by midnight, winds across the
coastal waters will quickly subside.
However, another fast moving front will be moving across the
area late Saturday. All guidance suggests we will have another
round of 35-45kt winds developing late in the day Saturday and
probably lingering all night. Expect another round of Gale
Warnings to be raised later this evening or overnight.
Otherwise the seas will remain rough as waves are running quite
high from today's wind and won't have a lot of time to subside
before the next round of wind later tomorrow into early Sunday.
