.SYNOPSIS...
Summer heat and humidity returns Sunday into at least the
middle of week. Dangerous heat begins in the Connecticut and
Merrimack Valleys Sunday, expanding across most of Southern New
England Monday and Tuesday with heat index values between 95
and 100 degrees. Dry weather will dominate the first half of the
week other than a spot shower/thunderstorm or two. A better
chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur
by mid to late in the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
935 PM Update...
A ridge of high pressure to our southeast will continue to pump
a south southwest flow of mild/muggy air into the region
overnight. Low clouds were once again moving northward given
cooling boundary layer and high dewpoint air in place. These low
clouds will likely impact most of our region overnight, but may
be only for a short time in portions of northern MA. Modest SW
low level jet will keep the surface winds a bit stronger than
last night. That coupled with the south southwest wind
trajectory should keep the fog confined to areas near the south
coast, Cape and Islands. In fact, even in these locations expect
the fog to be less than last night given a bit more wind in the
boundary layer.
The proximity of the upper level ridge will keep us dry tonight.
Nonetheless, increasing cloud cover coupled with a non-
decoupling boundary layer and high dewpoint air will result in a
muggy night. Low temperatures will only bottom out in the upper
60s to the lower 70s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
414 PM Update:
Sunday:
** Heat Advisories in Effect Sunday for the CT and Merrimack Valleys
into Metrowest **
It should be a rather mild and muggy early Sunday morning for most
of Southern New England. Low clouds/stratus should be fairly
widespread initially, with a mix of fog and stratus near the South
Coast/Cape and Islands. Trend through the mid to late morning will
be for decreasing low clouds and considerably more sun across most
of the interior and coastal plain. BUFKIT forecast soundings near
the South Coast, Cape and Islands show weak/inverted near-sfc lapse
rates for most of the day. While fog should dissipate and/or shift
offshore, low clouds/stratus should linger for much of if not all of
the daytime and the lack of insolation will keep temperatures
cooler here (upper 70s-near 80F).
However the main story for Sunday will be the building heat and
humidity away from the southern coast. Heat Advisories were hoisted
with this forecast package for Sunday across the Merrimack,
Connecticut Valleys into portions of Metrowest Boston. The Advisory
was issued for these locations on the basis that that Sunday will be
the first of potentially several consecutive days of 95-99F heat
indices in the Advisory area, where forecast confidence in Sunday's
heat indices was considered high enough. A few other locations do
get close (thinking the northern RI/Providence metro area, Worcester
County and some of the Greater Boston suburbs) but confidence in at
least mid-90s heat indices wasn't as high for these areas. Once
early-morning lower clouds dissipate by mid-morning, air
temperatures are expected to soar across most of the interior and
coastal plain to highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Dewpoints
should be similar to today, and any diurnal/afternoon mixing of
lower dewpoints should be offset by the continued influx of higher
dewpoints on S/SW winds. Outside of the Advisory area, maximum heat
indices should be in the upper 80s to low 90s; in the Advisory
areas, mid to upper 90s heat indices are forecast. Southwest breezes
should cut into the heat/humidity to a limited extent.
It is advised that individuals practice appropriate heat-related
precautions including limiting time outdoors, taking frequent breaks
and staying hydrated. As mentioned this will be the first of several
days of high/oppressive heat and humidity - and this was
messaged in the Heat Advisory text product with similar or even
higher heat indices expected into Monday. Have focused the Heat
Advisory into the Sunday daylight/afternoon hours but will
likely need to be extended or expanded into other locations for
daytime Monday pending later guidance.
Sunday Night:
Another mild and muggy night, offering little relief from the heat
from the daytime. Fog and stratus look to again maintain itself
and/or redevelop across southeast New England. Dry weather continues
otherwise, with muggy lows in the upper 60s to lower to middle 70s.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Big Picture...
Upper high pressure builds over the Northeast USA during the first
half of the week. This would bring general fair weather, but with
enough heating and humidity to support scattered or widely scattered
showers/thunder. An upper trough/surface cold front in Eastern
Canada will shift southeast during the later half of the week and
may push the cold front over or close to Srn New England.
High pressure with contours of 594 Dm is near the maximum for late
June, suggesting deep-layer temperatures that will be well-above
normal. As the Canadian upper trough shifts southeast, these heights
will fall back into the 580s, possibly upper 570s, suggesting cooler
temperatures in the late-week.
Model mass fields are similar during the early week, bringing high
confidence in the forecast through Wednesday. As the trough moves
southeast, all models show the same trend of falling heights, but
with differing details in how this comes about. The main uncertainty
is due to timing of the surface cold front...which day does it move
over Srn New England supporting the cooler temperatures. Confidence
falls to low-moderate late week.
Details...
Monday to Wednesday...
High pressure centered offshore, but backing up against Srn New
England. As noted, high contour height aloft suggests a hot day. The
mixed layer is forecast to the high side of 800-mb. Temperatures at
this level will be equiv to 18-20C at 850-mb...supporting highs in
the mid 90s. Dew points will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s, so
min temps will be in the upper 60s to mid 70s. The combination of
heat and humidity will create heat index values of 95F to 100F,
suggesting Heat Advisory values at least Monday and Tuesday,
possibly Wednesday.
CAPE values are forecast to reach over 1000 J/Kg, and LI values at
minus 2 to minus 3. Expect enough instability for a
shower/thunderstorm in western and central MA, CT on Monday, then
reaching farther east Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday to Saturday...
Temperatures appear to cool into the 80s late week, but with
humidity lingering through at least Thursday, possibly longer.
Timing of the approaching cold front remains unclear. Expect an
eventual passage either Friday or Saturday. CAPEs and LI remain
unstable through Friday, so potential for showers/thunder remains at
least that long and possibly into Saturday with any frontal passage.

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels.
Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.
Tonight: High confidence in trends, moderate on timing.
Initial VFR (MVFR at PVD) to deteriorate to MVFR-IFR as
stratus near the South Coast/Cape Cod expands northward. Given
somewhat stronger winds not expecting much of any fog or mist
away from the South Coast. Timing when degraded conditions
begin is still somewhat unclear, but currently thinking around
02-08z/10P-4P from south to north. May be a brief LIFR period
at PVD in that timeframe but for now left as IFR.
For South Coast/Cape and Islands, stratus should prevail but fog
from adjacent waters may occasionally advance landward. Lowest
conditions at IFR to LIFR (at times VLIFR in locally dense fog).
S/SW winds around 8-12 kt.
Sunday: High confidence in trends, moderate on timing.
MVFR-IFR stratus improves through mid to late AM to VFR across
TAFs away from the South Coast/Cape and Islands. Lowest
categories (IFR-LIFR) continue for South Coast/Cape and Islands.
S/SW winds 12-16 kt, gusts lower to mid 20s kt range.
Sunday Night: Moderate confidence.
VFR should prevail for the interior, but sub-VFR stratus/fog may
again continue for South Coast/Cape and Islands.
KBOS TAF...Moderate Confidence in TAF.
KBDL TAF...Moderate Confidence in TAF.
Outlook /Monday through Thursday/...
Monday through Monday Night: VFR. Breezy.
Tuesday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Breezy. Slight
chance SHRA or TSRA.
Tuesday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight
chance SHRA or TSRA.
Wednesday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Breezy. Chance
SHRA or TSRA.
Wednesday Night through Thursday: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR
possible. Breezy. Chance SHRA.

.MARINE...
Forecaster Confidence Levels.
Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.
Tonight: High confidence.
SW winds trend less gusty, around 15-20 kt. Seas 2-4 ft, highest
offshore. Main concern will be the ongoing and/or re-developing
areas of fog on most of the waters; visbys as low as one-quarter
mile.
Sunday into Sunday Night: Moderate confidence.
SW wind gusts may increase further into the low-20s kt range,
potentially necessitating small craft advisories especially eastern
waters. However shallower mixing may keep gusts just short of SCA
levels. Seas should build around 3-4 ft, near 5 ft on the eastern
offshore waters by afternoon, then increase to around 4-5 ft on most
offshore waters. Fog with visbys 1-3 miles, as low as one-quarter
mile possible, especially for the evening.
Outlook /Monday through Thursday/...
Monday through Monday Night: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory
winds with gusts up to 25 kt. Seas up to 5 ft.
Tuesday through Tuesday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of
seas approaching 5 ft. Slight chance of rain showers.
Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching
5 ft. Chance of rain showers.
Wednesday Night through Thursday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas
up to 5 ft. Chance of rain showers.
