.SYNOPSIS...

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this evening, with
some strong to severe storms likely especially in northern MA. The
heat wave breaks Thursday, but oppressive humidity continues along
with more showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall
possible. The weather pattern remains unsettled on Friday into the
Fourth of July holiday weekend with the threat of showers continuing
and temperatures trending much cooler than normal.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...

Highlights

* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of southern New England until
  10 PM.

* Expect showers and thunderstorms to continue into the evening.
  Should see a downward trend due to the loss of daytime heating.

Trough digs into eastern Ontario/western Quebec by late tonight with
a weak shortwave lifting through southern New England. A prefrontal
trough will slide through bringing showers and thunderstorms.

Main concern in the immediate near term is the severe thunderstorm
risk for much of southern New England into the evening. Environment
parameters show surface based CAPEs of 2000-4000 J/kg per SPC
mesoanalysis with effective shear of 30-45 kts. The highest shear is
located across the interior, which is where we are thinking there is
the highest risk of severe weather. If cells stay discrete could
have a few supercells and a higher risk of large hail. Mid level
lapse rates remain poor, but this should be overcome by the nearly
adiabatic low level lapse rates and high instability. As CAMs
suggest should have things congeal more into a line and become more
of a wind threat as highlighted by SPCs outlook. DCAPE values range
from about 800-1000+ so damaging winds will be a risk. On top of
this should have heavy downpours with PWATs of 1.75-2 inches with
warm cloud layer depths between 3.5-4.5 km. Luckily, storms will be
moving, but given the airmass if these move over an urban area
cannot rule out localized flash flooding.

Expect the activity to diminish as we progress into the evening and
lose daytime heating. SPC Mesoanalysis shows CIN increase from south
to north, so am somewhat uncertain how stuff will hold together.
Have thrown out the HRRR guidance today as it has continually
diminished stuff far too quickly given the environment in place.
Will stay cloudy and expect a lull for a bit in precipitation late
tonight, but will have showers linger. Still expecting another mild
night across the region with the frontal boundary not through the
region. Low temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s for much of the
region.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...

Highlights

* Unsettled with scattered to numerous showers and a few
  thunderstorms. Rainfall may be heavy at times and could result in
  some flash flooding Thursday and Thursday night.

Trough over eastern Ontario/western Quebec will dig into the
central/eastern Great Lakes by early Friday. A cold front will
slowly slide southeastward into southern New England. Could see a
surface low ride along the frontal boundary late on Thursday into
early Friday.

Have two main concerns during this timeframe. The first is a heavy
rainfall threat that could lead to some flash flooding. The other is
that there is a risk for a few strong to severe thunderstorms
provided we can get the instability. First, for the heavy rain
threat expect fairly widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms
across southern New England on Thursday into Thursday night. Have
fairly high PWAT values across much of southern New England on
Thursday, between 1.5 to 2 inches and similar values Thursday night.
Should see the highest PWATs located from CT through RI into eastern
MA. This is also where there are warm cloud layer depths of 3-4 km.
If there are any leftover boundaries from storms yesterday then
there will be a higher risk for heavy downpours, which could lead to
localized flooding. Right now thinking the risk is highest where the
PWATs are the highest. Went with a combination of the 75th
percentile of guidance, WPC and NERFC for QPF Thursday through
Thursday night.

As for the severe weather risk on Thursday will have plenty of deep
layer shear available for organized convection with 40-50 kts of 0-6
km shear. There will be plenty of moisture available with the PWATs
mentioned above and dew points in the mid to upper 60s. The
uncertainty lies with the amount of instability available due to
cloud cover in place. Models showing a few hundred to 1000 J/kg of
MUCAPE, so cannot completely rule out a severe storm or two. Right
now per the latest HREF think this would be for CT to SE MA where 0-
3 km SRH is between 100-200 along with some areas with 2-5 km UH AOA
75.

Given the cloud cover in place will be cooler, but still humid given
the frontal boundary has not moved through. Aloft 925 hPa
temperatures will be between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. The result
are highs ranging from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Low temperatures
Thursday night fall into the 60s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Highlights...

* Significant pattern change Friday & Saturday with much cooler
  temps especially Sat along with scattered showers

* Improving trends Sunday and especially Mon with drier weather and
  warming into the 70s Sun and 80s Mon

* Warm to hot weather Tue and Wed with highs 85-90

Friday...

Mid level trough axis still west of New England, yielding cyclonic
flow across MA/RI/CT. While main surface low exits Cape Cod early
Fri, mid level lift induces a broad area of low pressure over SNE.
This combined with deep layer moisture, especially over RI and
eastern MA, will support scattered showers thru the day. Noticeably
cooler with highs only 70-75 due to cloud cover and showers. Still
somewhat humid across CT/RI and southeast MA with dew pts in the
60s, upper 50s across northern MA.

Saturday...

Core of cooler air descends over SNE Sat as mid/upper trough rotates
across New England. This drives the frontal boundary offshore and
surface wave on the boundary enhancing NE flow into SNE. Thus highs
Sat only 65-70, 10-15 degs cooler than normal! Not a washout but
scattered showers likely.

Sunday...

Our transition day as mean mid level trough axis begins to exit
offshore. Thus a drying trend and not as cool with highs in the 70s.
Winds generally light and variable.

Monday...

Big improvement with rising heights and NW flow aloft, supporting
much warmer temps with highs in the 80s and dry weather.

Tuesday/Wednesday...

Warmer with highs 85-90. Possibly not as hot Wed pending timing of
next FROPA. Chance of convection with this feature both days given
uncertainty on timing of FROPA.

.AVIATION /21Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Forecaster Confidence Levels.

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today...High confidence in trends, but moderate in timing.

VFR with scattered showers and storms developing between 19-22Z.
If a thunderstorm moves over a terminal expect conditions to
lower to MVFR/IFR with potential for gusts over 50 kts in
stronger storms. SW to W winds at 10-15 kts with gusts of 20-25
kts.

Tonight...Moderate confidence.

Showers continue with thunderstorm activity diminishing as it
moves toward the south coast during the evening. Anticipate a
lull in precipitation overnight, but will see more showers
spreading in toward daybreak/Thursday AM. Stratus and fog
developing over Cape/Islands and south coast with IFR to VLIFR
conditions. Expect the lowest over the Islands.

Thursday...Moderate confidence.

VFR with scattered to numerous showers and perhaps a few
thunderstorms. Anticipate the stratus/fog along the south coast
to lift. Ceilings will generally range from 4-6 kft. W winds
shifting to the S/SW around 5 kts.

Thursday night...Moderate confidence.

Scattered showers with some isolated thunderstorm activity
especially during the evening. Rainfall may be heavy at times.
Conditions deteriorating to MVFR/IFR with patchy fog. Light
southerly winds shifting to the E/NE late.

At 338 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Lenox, or 7 miles southwest of Pittsfield, moving east at 35 mph.

If this storm holds together it will be capable of producing hail
and damaging wind gusts as it moves east within the next hour.

Locations impacted include...
Westfield, Northampton, Easthampton, Southampton, Hatfield,
Williamsburg, Huntington, Russell, Westhampton, Whately, Chester,
Blandford, Chesterfield, Worthington, Goshen, Cummington, Montgomery,

thunderstorm over Adams, or near North Adams, moving east at 30 mph.

Pea size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will accompany these
storms.

Locations impacted include... Greenfield, Orange, Deerfield,
Monroe, Montague, Sunderland, Northfield, Bernardston, Buckland,
Conway, Shelburne, Leverett, Erving, Shutesbury, Ashfield, Colrain,
