...POWERFUL WINTER STORM ON TRACK FOR THIS WEEKEND...

.A significant late season winter storm will move across the Desert 
Southwest Friday to near the Four Corners region by Saturday, and 
then track east/northeast across southeast Colorado Sunday.  This 
track will bring significant snowfall to much of northeast and north 
central Colorado, and likely result in difficult if not impossible 
travel from Saturday afternoon through Sunday and Sunday night.  The 
most severe conditions from deep accumulating snow will likely occur 
in and near the Front Range Mountains and Foothills where 2 to 4 
feet of snow may fall, and along the I-25 Urban Corridor where up to 
2 feet of snow can be expected.  Temperatures will be warm enough to 
bring a mix of rain and snow to areas east of a Greeley to Limon 
line Saturday into Saturday evening, but temperatures should turn 
cold enough there Saturday night into Sunday for mostly snow. Winds 
are also expected to increase by Sunday, with blowing and drifting 
snow developing across the plains.

...POWERFUL WINTER STORM ON TRACK FOR THIS WEEKEND...

.A significant late season winter storm will move across the Desert 
Southwest Friday to near the Four Corners region by Saturday, and 
then track east/northeast across southeast Colorado Sunday.  This 
track will bring significant snowfall to much of northeast and north 
central Colorado, and likely result in difficult if not impossible 
travel from late Saturday afternoon or evening through Sunday and 
Sunday night.  The most severe conditions from deep accumulating 
snow will likely occur in and near the Front Range Mountains and 
Foothills where 2 to 4 feet of snow may fall, and along the I-25 
Urban Corridor where up to 2 feet of snow can be expected. The 
favored locations for the heaviest snow totals along the I-25 
Corridor will be from Boulder north through the Fort Collins area. 
Temperatures will be warm enough to bring a mix of rain and snow to 
areas east of a Fort Morgan to Limon line Saturday into Saturday 
evening, but temperatures should turn cold enough there Saturday 
night into Sunday for mostly snow. Winds are also expected to 
increase by Sunday, with blowing and drifting snow developing across 
the plains.

Main short wave has passed well to the north and east of the
forecast area this morning, but there was still a modest amount of
low/mid level moisture and instability left behind. This has kept
a few snow showers going in the mountains and scattered rain and
snow showers in lower elevations. We'll see more snow showers in
the high country through the rest of the day with sufficient
moisture below about 600 mb. Expect another 1-4 inches in the
mountains, so current Winter Weather Advisory will remain in
effect until 5 pm for the northern tier of mountains. heaviest
totals will be under the more persistent convective showers, with
some of these capable of producing 1-2" in less than an hour and
creating localized hazardous travel conditions.

On the plains, despite the building subsidence, we'll likely see a
few convective showers, but overall their intensity should be
diminished by the downslope flow in place. Most of those would
transition to rain as well this afternoon with warming temps.

We'll adjust temperatures based on latest observations and lack
of scouring of the cooler airmass north of Denver. HRRR appears to
be overmixing things again so we'll temper the forecast highs
back a bit especially north of Denver. However, that said, with
the steep lapse rates we could still see a late day push of
strong, gusty winds off the Front Range. Palmer Divide will see
stronger, gusty winds to around 40 mph through the day.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 244 AM MST Wed Mar 10 2021

A short wave trough embedded in the southwest flow aloft is
lifting northeast across the Central Rockies. This will bring snow
through mid morning, with some rain mixed in across the lower
elevations. Could see a couple inches across far northern Colorado
and in the mountains, with less elsewhere. Subsidence spreads
across the area later this morning as the wave exits Colorado.
Gusty west winds are expected to from this afternoon, mainly along
and south of I-70. Airmass will be unstable this afternoon and
early evening with lapse rates of 7-9 C/km up to 500mb. Over the
mountains, there is a small amount of CAPE as well. Will keep
scattered to likely PoPs in the mountains through early evening
for this. The stronger showers could produce a quick inch or two
of snow and create slippery conditions. Downslope flow east of
mountains will limit the amount of showers, but expect a few weak
showers to overcome the downslope flow. Thus will have low PoPs
into the early evening hours as well. After the early evening
showers dissipate, expect dry conditions through the rest of the
night as a weak ridge tracks across Colorado.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 315 AM MST Wed Mar 10 2021

A large trough which is currently sitting just off the northern
California coast will progress towards Colorado over the coming
days eventually bringing a significant snowstorm to our forecast
area. This trough will take its time moving across the nation and
that is part of the reason for the high precipitation values it
will bring.

The trough will move onto the west coast today and progress
southeastward while it begins to cut off from a more progressive
trough moving through southern Canada. As it does this, a jet streak
will rotate around the base of the trough and will position itself
over Colorado on Thursday. Our CWA will be under the left exit
region of this jet streak which will provide weak QG ascent despite
the upper level pattern forming a slight ridge across the area. The
morning will be dry for much of the forecast area although there
could be a few light snow showers in the mountains. By the
afternoon, some instability will build in over the mountains
which may lead to isolated snow showers developing especially
north of I-70. By Thursday night, warm air advection will develop
around 700 mb increasing the QG ascent. Models are indicating
that the northern foothills and areas along the Cheyenne Ridge
will see steady snow showers begin to develop potentially lasting
for much of the night. These areas could see 2 to 6 inches of
snowfall Thursday night. There won't be enough moisture across the
plains and much of the southern foothills to produce snowfall so
these areas should stay dry or have much lighter snow amounts.

By Friday, the cut off trough will move slowly eastward through
Arizona as lee cyclogenesis increases substantially across southeast
Colorado and northeast New Mexico. The lee cyclogenesis will aid
in developing moderate easterly winds across the plains which
increases humidities and the chance for light snow. Any
accumulation from this snow will likely be in the foothills as
other areas should see no accumulation or less than an inch.

The main event that has caught eye of weather enthusiasts will
begin late Friday and into Saturday. It is also when the models
begin to have larger disagreements. What models agree upon is that
thunderstorms will develop along a dryline across western Texas
to western Kansas as a surface cyclone depends over southeast
Colorado and northeast New Mexico. Meanwhile, the cut off trough
will move slowly eastward providing ample QG ascent for a long
duration of moderate to heavy snowfall across much of our forecast
area. What the models differ on is how quickly the cut off trough
progresses eastward and how strong the upslope flow is. The GFS
and Canadian are more progressive with the cut off trough and have
stronger easterly winds at 700 and 500 mb meaning there would be
better upslope flow. The ECMWF is slower with the progression of
the trough and has weaker upslope flow. To give an example of the
difference in upslope flow between the models, the 00Z GFS has an
area of almost 60 knots of due easterly 700 mb flow across the
northeastern plains of Colorado at 21Z Saturday while the 00Z ECMWF
has between 25-30 knots of southeasterly flow during that same
time. Considering the GFS has 60 knots of upslope flow screaming
towards the mountains and foothills with strong warm air advection
and QG aloft, it's not that hard to believe the QPF output near
Boulder is around 1.75 inches between 18Z and 00Z Saturday
evening. The question is, are the 60 knot easterly winds at 700
mb in the GFS realistic? It seems unlikely. But could the upslope
component of the wind be in the 35-45 knot range for a 12-24 hour
period? That is much more likely. What peaks my interest is that
the model that has the lowest ensemble mean for QPF in Denver is
the ECMWF with a mean of 2 inches. That means at this time there
are two main solutions, with one being a more intense but quicker
moving solution (GFS and Canadian) and the other being the less
intense but slower moving solution (ECMWF). With the models
becoming more consistent with their solutions, confidence is
growing quickly that there will be a high QPF output from this
storm perhaps in the 1.5 to 3 inch range for Denver. There is high
confidence that snow ratios will be quite low from a
climatological standpoint across our forecast area. Soundings show
low to mid level lapse rates will be near the moist adiabatic
lapse rate while any isothermal layer that develops would likely
be above -10 degrees Celsius. In addition, the warm ground
temperatures and compaction will aid in lowering snow ratios. It
is possible the average snow ratio may end up in the 8 or 9 to 1
ratio with this storm. Therefore, the messaging of 1 to 3 feet of
snow for much of our forecast area is still on track. Winds will
increase late on Saturday and through Sunday with gusts up to 45
mph possible across the eastern plains near Limon.

There air two main aspects of this storm that have high levels of
uncertainty. One is where the exact track of the storm will end up
which will play a big role in the location of the rain/snow line.
The area from Colorado Springs to Limon to Akron to Holyoke could
see a good amount of rain if the track ends up being more towards
the northwest. Or that area could be a focus for blizzard
conditions if the storm tracks farther south and produces more
snow. The second uncertainty is the start and end time of the
precipitation which is dependent on how quickly the cut off trough
moves across. It is these two areas of high uncertainty and the
fact that we currently have winter weather highlights in effect
that lead us to not issuing a Winter Storm Watch this morning.

Models are indicating that another cut off trough could move across
Colorado early next week. There isn't much confidence at all that
this will occur so PoPs were kept low. The snow cover and cool air
aloft should keep temperatures well below normal next week.

Lower ceilings and patchy but lifting fog will slowly dissipate
through 18Z-19Z.  A westerly downslope flow is expected to bring
drier conditions, but could still see an isolated shower move off
the foothills through about 02Z. Wind forecast is tricky, but
should see a period of gusty west winds spread east across most of
the Denver area TAF sites during the 19Z-00Z period. A weak
surge/cold front will likely back across the area with light
northeast winds 01Z-03Z with areas of stratus/MVFR ceilings
developing.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Snow showers will continue across the mountains through early
evening. Some of the showers will produce a brief period of heavy
snow with a quick inch or two of accumulation, resulting in slick
roads in spots. Along the Front Range, gusty winds will develop
with winds reaching 45 mph across the foothills, Palmer Divide,
and adjacent plains. Critical fire weather conditions are expect
across Lincoln county and to the south and east where it will be
very dry in addition to the gusty winds.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Snow showers will be possible in the mountains and foothills
Thursday and Thursday night, with 2 to 6 inches of accumulation
possible in the northern foothills. More widespread but generally
lighter snow showers are possible Friday. Parts of the northern
foothills could see another 3 to 5 inches.

A significant storm system is still on track to bring widespread
snowfall to northeast Colorado Friday night through the weekend.
Snowfall amounts across the urban corridor and foothills could be
between 1 to 3 feet with potentially higher amounts in the
northern foothills. Snowfall amounts will be much lighter west of
the Continental Divide. There remains a high degree of uncertainty
with regards to snow amounts across the eastern plains,
especially farther south and east where some precipitation may
fall as rain. Travel across the urban corridor and foothills may
become nearly impossible Saturday evening through much of Sunday.
The snow will wind down late Sunday night and into Monday as the
system exits.
