.DISCUSSION...A weak shortwave over UT will provide high clouds
southeast of Boise through this afternoon. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms expected over the central ID mountains and near the
ID/NV border with gusty winds in the vicinity of storms, otherwise
mostly clear with breezy northwest winds this afternoon. Record
heat expected this weekend into next week. Forecast on track with
no updates.

.AVIATION...VFR. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms along the Nevada
border and in the Boise Mountains east of Idaho City. Surface winds:
West to northwest 10 to 20 kts, decreasing to 10 kts or less after
03z/Fri. Local gusts to 25-35 kts near thunderstorms. Winds aloft at
10k feet MSL: Northwest to north 10 to 20 kts. Hot temperatures this
will lead to increased density altitude.
Weekend Outlook...VFR. A few showers over the central Idaho
mountains Friday afternoon. Periods of gusty winds during afternoons

SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night...Fewer thunderstorms
are expected this afternoon and evening with only the ID/NV
border and the Camas Prairie still under any threat. On Friday
afternoon only the Camas Prairie will remain, and on Saturday
none. The upper low off California that sent moisture our way the
last few days will weaken today. Meanwhile, a weak upper trough
in BC will change the flow aloft from southwesterly to drier
northwesterly and also bring slight cooling Friday. Gusty northwest
surface winds 20 to 30 mph will also blow this afternoon and again
Friday afternoon. As the upper trough exits Friday night an intense
upper high in the Pacific will migrate northeast toward BC and WA
Saturday where it will stay at least 5 more days and bring extreme
heat to the northwestern US including our area. New record highs
will begin to be set in eastern Oregon Friday and western Idaho
Saturday, and many more records will be set in the days to follow.
LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday...A strong ridge over the area
will intensify the hot and dry conditions. Temperatures through much
of the forecast period will steadily rise, with values reaching
20 to 25 degrees above normal and record-values. Models have
started to bring in a bit of moisture for a few afternoon/evening
showers for Wednesday and Thursday, though coverage and confidence
in development remain low.
