The latest satellite depicts the cold front approaching Montgomery
and Heflin. The front will continue east and southeast and exit
before sunrise. A band of lower clouds was developing along and
just ahead of the front, then virtually clear behind it. Most
locations in Central Alabama had rain this afternoon and had very
little breaks in the clouds before sunset. With the saturated
ground and cooling, fog should become widespread. The Fog Product
and surface observations have parts of west and northwest areas
1/2 mile visibility or less at this writing. Issued a Dense Fog
Advisory earlier this evening have have roughly the northwest two
thirds included. This may need to be expanded southeastward but
will monitor trend after midnight. The fog should mix out between
8-9 am with mostly clear conditions on Friday. Temperature trends
remain on target from the last tweak, so lows from 39 to 55
degrees overnight and highs Friday in the 60s and 70s.

Pre-frontal trough was located from just east of Wedowee to near
Shorter. All of the convection is located along this boundary. A
few storms may produce some gusty winds to near 30 mph of so, but
mainly just a relatively brief shower. The cold front was located
some 60-90 miles behind the trough and both of these features will
continue east south and exit the area around midnight. Drier air
filters in behind the front and the depth of this drying and
timing overnight will be a factor. With most areas receiving rain,
we will have a moist ground and cooler conditions moving in. It
appears that ground fog will develop late tonight and some of the
fog may become dense with visibilities below 1 mile at times.

Only minor changes made to the extended forecast. Lowered
temperatures Sunday morning a degree or two and it is looking more
likely we will see a widespread freeze for at least the northern
half of Alabama.

Previous long-term discussion:

Friday night through Wednesday.

A shortwave will rotate around the base of a larger trough over
the eastern CONUS on Friday night, pushing a cold front through
the forecast area. With strong cold advection in place,
temperatures on Saturday afternoon will only reach the 50s
northwest of I-85. As high pressure settles in Saturday night,
temperatures should fall into the 30 to 35 degree range early
Sunday morning.

Yet another shortwave will rotate around the larger trough on
Sunday, leading to westerly low-level flow and an upward trend in
temperatures across the western and northern counties. Dry
conditions will continue for Monday and Tuesday with high pressure
in place. A warming trend should commence on Tuesday as heights
rise and mid-level flow becomes more zonal. The next weather
system is expected approach the Mississippi River on Wednesday,
bringing southerly low-level flow to the region.

06Z TAF Discussion.

Saturated ground conditions, clearing skies, and many locations
seeing winds reduced to near calm will result in areas of fog. The
fog will reduce visibilities to 1/2 mile or less at times. These
conditions will spread from northwest to southeast overnight.
Several terminals will become impacted by 08-10z or sooner. Winds
will become light and variable early Friday with the fog mixing
out sometime around 14-15z.
